  OT:

  Does anyone know if its possible to access your Priority Pass account, via the app prior to receiving your Platnium Card? Have been approved for Platinum, haven’t got it or the Priority Pass yet but flying on Friday so would be good to have lounge access. Any ideas?

    Yes, just call priority pass and they will sort it out for you. I never bothered with the physical card anyway.

    Yes, people have done this. Not sure if you need to ring Amex or PPass but one of them can give you your number which will let you access the app.

      I rang PP recently about only using the app to access lounges, and they warned me that some only grant access when shown a physical card. I believe the online directory is supposed to show if a lounge has this restriction. BTW, my PP physical cards arrived 24 hours after my platinum cards (which was last week)
      My issue was staying at the Edinburgh Waldorf over the weekend. The Hilton Gold status hadn’t materialised, and Hilton showed no interest in expediting it (saying it was Amex that had to do it, which I didn’t believe). When I applied enough pressure they contacted the Waldorf and told them to treat my booking ‘as if I had Gold status’ which worked.

      Called PP, they didn’t have any info yet. Called Amex, put me on hold for a couple of mins then they were able to give me my membership number and my verification code. Got the app all set up and ready to go now. Finger’s crossed they accept that tomorrow…. in Edinburgh… at 4.30am.

  OT – If I make my brother a Gold Sup holder on my Plat card, will he, his partner (not yet married) and 2 kids all be covered by Amex Travel insurance?

  Also, does the Car Hire Insurance benefit cover these Gold sup cards, or just the main Plat sup?

    without knowing the full PB list, I’ve booked Indigo Manchester-Victoria for 15k points, which was a surprise because Staybridge Suites on Oxford Road is part of PB (at 15k points) as well. Didn’t think they’d offer two properties from the same city.

  Platinum Supplementary Cards – I’m confused. Some reports say they cost £170 but the Amex website has: Extend your benefits to those closest to you and earn points for their purchases with up to five complimentary Supplementary Cards (one Platinum and a combination of four Gold or Green Cards).

  So is it £170 when you’ve given away your one free one?

  OT – re the £140 Preferred rewards gold card annual fee. If I’ve had this card before (it was actually the charge card version) and I decide to sign up for it again to replace my Platinum card, do I get the first year free again or is this a one time only deal? It was more than 2 years ago if that makes any difference.

      So apply for gold to have alongside platinum and when the time comes, cancel platinum and keep gold and this avoids the fee? I note below from yourself Rob, that if you ask for platinum to be downgraded to gold you do have to pay the fee. I wasn’t even sure this was possible as one is charge and one is credit card. Would there ever be logic or a reason for doing it that way?

        Sorry also meant to ask what determines whether it’s your “first year” or not? Have seen everything obviously about not entitled to sign up bonuses if held card in past 24 months but nothing about the fee eligibility.

          If you cancel and reapply, not sure what gap is needed (weeks?), you get another free first year and lounge passes. Seems like there must be a gap between MR cards however.

    Gold-related, but CHARGE: if you upgrade the Green to Plat (swallowing a portion of the Green fee en route via an eventual pro-rated refund), pick up 20k and 5k (supp) and manage to do so BEFORE the Plat fee is billed, and then downgrade Plat to GOLD charge (thanks for the tip, Harry) — again, BEFORE the Plat card fee is billed to your account — will you then NOT be billed anything as the Gold is free in year one? Or is this wishful thinking…

      Gold is not free if you downgrade to it. Nothing to stop you cancelling and opening a new Gold from scratch EXCEPT that you’d have to empty your MR account.

        I was told via Brighton call centre that there is no longer a gold charge card to downgrade to and that if I wanted to downgrade my platinum to a green charge card, i’d have to apply using the website and put in my current platinum card number..

          Weird. I downgraded my Plat to Gold in April and was given a Gold charge not credit card…

      Not so wishful thinking:
      There seems to be some sort of bug in Amex billing that they often don’t charge the Plat fee until the same date you would have been charged the Green/Gold fee. So it’s normally charged the same day of the first statement generated (and every 12 months after, i.e. 1 month after renewal) but if you wait for the Green fee, then upgrade, often they refund that one but don’t charge for the Plat til next year.
      NOTE: This does NOT always work. At your own risk
