The InterContinental Maldives hotel resort is opening soon

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The first luxury IHG property in the Maldives (if you exclude the Holiday Inn!) is about to open.

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is now taking bookings for arrivals from 1st September.

The bad news is that there are no reward nights currently loaded into the system.  This is a shame, given that the cheapest room – Beach Pool Villa – is around $1,000 per night plus taxes.

Intercontinental Maldives opening

Hopefully this will change.  If reward nights do open up, I would expect the supply for the next year to disappear quickly so you need to be prepared with your plans.

Note that the Beach Pool Villa – the only room category likely to be available as a reward – only sleeps two people.  Redemptions are not an option for families unless you can ‘buy up’ for cash to the two-floor Lagoon Pool Villa which sleeps four.

Access from Male is via seaplane, so you will be on the hook for $580 return per adult and $290 return per child, plus taxes, for the transfer.  Even as a redemption this isn’t going to be cheap.

The hotel website is here.

OT: Anybody know if we can use Heathriw Rewards shopping vouchers to buy branded gift cards from WHSmith or other retailers airside T5?

    • SG says:

      Good luck with that
About a month ago,I have been checking every WHSmith plus some Boots stores at T5 trying to find some gift vouchers to make up the threshold spend for the Heathrow Rewards/BA £150 spent in one day.Non existent or just a few rubish ones(no M&S,Waitrose, non even Amazon)

      • Alex M says:

Choice of GC is better in the landside WHSmith than in airside one, from experience.

    • Czechoslovakia says:

Got £60 of M&S vouchers from T5 WHS in November using doubled up Heathrow Rewards transferred in a double up promo from Emirates a couple of years ago after an invol. Reroute from Swiss. Till staff didn’t know if possible. Shift manager didn’t know either. He called Head Office, who didn’t seem to know. He processed it manually just to get rid of me. I don’t shop in M&S either! Happily a colleague exchanged the vouchers for cash. A good result, but very lucky. It is possibly if you get the right (or rather untrained) staff member.

    • BJ says:

Thanks, will see what I can do 0shortly 🙂

  • Tom1 says:

Incredibly, the are still rooms available at the Hilton Ageas Bowl for the Friday night of the game
£550 per night. Or 40,000 points.

  • Craig says:

OT: Hilton offer has appeared on Amex Plat, main card only. Spend £350 for 4000 points.

    • meta says:

+1 Only valid at participating locations, so check before booking. This time valid both for Euro and GBP bookings.

    • Tom1 says:

On my plat charge too, but not the green charge or plat cash back.
Has anyone noticed if the Green card gets less of the offers than Plat does?

    • Simon says:

and a random 3 postcode new to shop small offer

    • Mike says:

Nowhere near as good as the previous £75 off £250 offer 🙁

      • meta says:

Agreed. Plus the fact that they limit participating locations and it’s summer, so peak prices. Somebody should also tell Amex that Sweden and Switzerland don’t use euro!

      • Lee says:

Still remember last year I had spend £150 for 5000 MRs offer

  • David D says:

OT: Speaking of the cricket, I finally have managed to redeem Emirates Skywards miles for the West Indies vs New Zealand match at Old Trafford. Took around 10 emails before they finally completed it manually. Therefore, if you are still having any issues I would suggest emailing them.

    • BS says:

      Me too.
On the plus side, they confirmed that the tickets are ‘platinum’ tickets – so you are getting 1.5p per mile (or 1.5p per MR point) for these redemptions. Ignoring the fact they are completely sold out, so money can’t buy them,

      • David D says:

That was what I had already managed to work out so I think for this game it works out at about 0.8p per point. Which considering the points are due to expire this year was decent value for me. The remaining couple of thousand will be transferred to Heathrow Rewards and that will be it unless there is another option to take value on orphan points.

  • Dev says:

Quick question on Hotel Redemptions….if I have a 2 year old that happily sleeps in the same King bed, do I have to declare him on the reservation or can I just turn up? The issue I have is that if I put him in the search engines, rooms are not available and if I take him off, then lo and behold rooms are there to book. What to do?

    • Shoestring says:

Don’t declare him & just turn up. You have a few choices, for example you could make the booking then phone ahead to ask for a cot if that would be more comfortable. Most hotels will be fine with that, some might be sniffy in some respect, so only you can decide what’s best. You can probably find specific hotel cot policy online. Or just travel with a portable cot.

The risk of getting turned away with your unannounced 2YO is pretty low, but you might as well make it zero chance by one of going alone to check in, with the other 2 following on.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

        +1

Only time I have encountered an issue was DubtmeTree Victoria in London and was ha ing booked a ‘Family’ room for 2A 1C and turning up with 2A 2C.

They said there wasn’t space but I stood without saying anything for a short while.until receptionist appreciated I was happy to wait for a solution, and then she ‘noticed’ that I was diamond and she was planning to upgrade to her suite which had space (it didn’t, but she was happy with it and therefore so was I)

The hotel will have occupancy limits per room for fire safety reasons so either dont tell them (they can only turn a blind eye up to a point ) or work with the hotel. In my experience either option works just fine

    • JPa says:

Done many times without issue with much older children in the UK. The easiest way is for one person to check in, in a big hotel they will never notice (or care). I can’t see you ever having a problem even if the did seem them when checking in, I used to take my own travel cot most of the time.

It can be more tricky in some foreign countries when they want to see all the passports.

    • marcw says:

Just turn up with your 2 y/o during check-in. If you want a cot they´ll probably ask you to pay something for it. Remember the receptionists are there to help you out and find solutions, not to put barriers.

      • Crafty says:

Highly doubt you will be asked to pay for a cot.

We did 87 nights across Asia with our 2 year old. Mainly Bonvoy and Hilton properties. Only ever booked for 2 adults, then immediately messaged hotel to ask for cot in room. Don’t recall even once having a problem (except stained cot bedding at the IC Pattaya but that’s a different issue!).

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Just to add to Shoestring and JPas assumptions – you didn’t say if it was just you at 2yo in king bed, if it is you alone with 2yo then obv hiding the said 2yo at checkin isn’t an option!

So either organise ahead of time or, my preference – ask for a cot on checkin and feign ignorance if they suggest you forgot to add 2yo to booking. Then ignore cot when it arrives

  • Ant says:

OT: just checking. If I downgrade my BA premium to the fee free one does it have an impact on when I can apply for the platinum card & get a sign on bonus? I currently only hold a BA premium card. Thanks

  • Andrew says:

Has anyone tried withdrawing cash on a Sainsbury’s credit card using Curve? How is it treated? Thanks, Andrew

  • Babyg says:

Another quiet auction ruined by hfp 🙁 whilst hfp got me into the travel and points, it’s posts cause its followers to collectively set upon offers and deals like locus and kill the golden goose, be it printer cartridges, sign up bonus or jessie j concerts.

    • Memesweeper says:

Better we all pile in and therefore the auction is a success rather than Hilton give up on this entirely and start doling out VIP packages to their staff!

      • Rob says:

There were zero bids on three of the four packages when I wrote the article a couple of days ago!

Jessie J was a fixed price event, so I’m not entirely sure how HFP drawing attention to it makes any difference. Same with the McLaren Family Day tickets.

We do, I admit, run up the auctions but the cricket one was literally going to go to waste.

My only annoyance is that Hilton’s marketing team doesn’t pay us for doing its job for them 🙂
