  • Anna says:

OT – Amex. Sorry if it’s been mentioned before but the website is showing a bonus £10 cash back on the every day Platinum “cash back” (HFP does not seem to like this as one word!) card after spending £1 if you are referred. It’s not clear when this would be credited though.

    • PaulC says:

ahh that’s why I haven’t been able to ask a question since Monday, been trying to post it all this time. Sorry another OT coming your way. HaHa

    • BJ says:

You get it with the rest of your cash baak as a statement t credit on 1st anniversary provided you have spent at least £3k.

    • Rob says:

This has always been there as a refer-a-friend benefit AFAIK.

      • BJ says:

Yes, and there is also £5 for adding a support. The bonuses are higher on the fee version as would be expected

  • PaulC says:

    Sorry OT Curve
Does Cash back from supermarkets get charged fees using Curve, In particular Lloyds Avios?
Also will it be eligible for Curves 1% cash back if you select that supermarket?
I’ve got a builder to pay cash next month, this could be very handy..

    • BJ says:

Test it with £10 and see.

      • PaulC says:

I tried £15 on Monday night in my local Co-op. Its finally showing on my Lloyds online statement with no fees but is that it now or do I need to wait for the final bill to come through to confirm? It will be too late then as I’ve just started next statement that wont be due until early next month.
This was my very first transaction with curve so completely new to me.

        • BJ says:

IME that’s it, but last time was December and things change so cannot guarantee it.

  • Craig says:

OT – Ba call centres. I’m looking to book a redemption via companion voucher tonight and don’t have enough avios to book the flights at 1am BST and then redeem the voucher in the morning (I have already booked the outbound).

Which number should i call to speak to a BA call centre in the US? I can’t see any US call centre numbers on the list on the BA website. Has anyone done this before and know who to ring? only got one chance so don’t want to ring the wrong number at 1am!

    Thanks 🙂

    • Dougie Forde says:

      I managed last year using 00 1 (800) 247 9297

Used WhatsApp and I wasn’t charged for the call

Worked perfectly, hope you get it sorted.

    • Spurs Debs says:

Craig are you flying F on the outbound journey ?
If you are call BA first class UK number no need to call USA or Japan.. I suggest who ever you call phone at least 5 mins before they open as in 12.55am to get through security questions.

      • Spurs Debs says:

        BA first number

        0800 408 7667

        • Craig says:

unfortunately no F released on the outbound, although I have set up an alert on a friends account to get an alert if any is released. Currently in Club World

That’s really useful to know though. The perks of flying first eh!

Will definitely ring at 12.55 – thanks for the advice!

          • Spurs Debs says:

Oh yes ! I was lucky had booked club out had an alert for first, phoned up and got them. Then I thought surely the first class phone number is 24 hours I phoned up and asked if I called back at the correct time would they be able to get my return flights. Yes no problem, I actually called at 12.52am and had couple of mins to spare. Had nice chat with the CS man who said he liked trying to get the tickets but hated disappointing passengers.
No problem waiting for a few minutes we just had a chat!
Have your passport handy as they asked for mine re security.

The night before I tried calling Japan as that’s where I’m going, was on hold for twenty mins a nightmare. I had the tickets in basket but they didn’t go through. I had enough points to do it that way. So next night I wasn’t taking any chances!

            Good luck !

          • Craig says:

Thanks Debs – got them! I knew MRU-LON in club were tricky to get so definitely didn’t want to take any chances like you say. Turns out the US number actually seemed to re-route to a UK call centre that is open for US customers??? That’s a relief anyway. I now just hope F opens up on the way out and that will make my year!

            Thanks!

          • Craig says:

thanks very much for the tips ! i will look into all those points. looking forward to it!

  • Babyg says:

Yippee another see sports event surrounded by HFPointers and their credit card churning chatter.

Whilst I have total respect for Rob and his website (and he needs to post to generate income), I do think that not every single points event/opportunity needs be posted here, I guess that’s just me trying to score some bargain tickets I guess.

But once Rob posts something basically everybody piles in and hoovers up the offers or pushes up the auction prices.

Sure if things are going to go to waste then posting about niche offers is a good idea, but altering the horde (the same horde who continue to ask about the green to plat bonus openly, the same horde who were in no small way directly responsible for the amex anti churn changes) will in the long term ruin another way great way to quietly redeem points.

    • BJ says:

Could be worse, they could all be gabbing about their new amex metal cards, Brexit or the Tory leadership so count your blessings. I think posting the moments etc is a positive thing on HFP coverage though.

      • Rob says:

These are straight redemptions though, and you’ve had 48 hours to get them! It’s not as if Marriott / Hilton / IHG are tipping me off in advance, because they’re not.

    • Spurs Debs says:

Don’t lump us all together, I’m taking the family to the mclaren family day. You won’t hear me talking about metal cards as don’t have or want one, and I’ve never churned!

But I am thankful for the heads up about the event from HFP
Or I would of missed it, as I tend not to remember to check what events are available.

  • Simon says:

OT. Has anyone had any luck getting foreign transaction charges refunded on the lloyds amex card? I have gbp 25 from 30/5 which is annoying.

    • BJ says:

Earlier comments suggest some have received refunds. Might depend on your story, and at some point Lloyd’s will almost certainly start refusing any refunds.

      • Anna says:

If your haven’t had your letter about the card changes, or are still within your 60 day notice period, Lloyds have no right whatsoever to charge FX fees and are obliged to refund them.

  • Reley says:

    O/T

Has anyone flown with Air China? How reliable are they? I don’t mind flying economy and I’m looking at flights to HND next year, and the cash rates (£450) are so low it’s a bit too tempting.

Yes there’s a stopover in Beijing for a few hours, and I’m weighing avios with BA, but ~35k + £400 per passenger (equivalent BA price for a return is £1000).

Really taking a hard look at this and trying to justify the avios use. Anyone have any horror stories with Air China I should be concerned about?

    • Nick says:

They’re fine, the largest airline in China and with a long and respectable history. Only concerns I’ve heard are about the food portion sizes (but £500 will pay for a lot of snacks on board) and connection time – some are quite long. Definitely worth asking if you can have a free 48-hours in Beijing if you’ve never been.

  • Stuart says:

OT but has anyone received an email from Curve regarding Curve Cash?

Any thoughts on the better choice between Curve Rewards and Curve Cash?

    • Anna says:

Had the email but my only thought is that all the listed retailers take Amex, so why would I use Curve at any of them?!!

      • Jonah says:

That’s your choice but a lot of people are moving away from Amex, particularly those no longer hunting avios.

        • Freddy says:

Definitely, I have a high business spend through Amazon so combining curve 1%, virgin+ card or IHG would give quite a good return!

          • Shoestring says:

Curve itself doesn’t give 1%, to be clear I guess you mean using Curve to access 1% on another card. Which as Anna says, you could equally do by using the underlying card in the first place.

Or have I got that wrong?

          • Shoestring says:

            cheers Freddy

I see it now. Good if you already have the paid-for Curve card, I guess. A lot of my expenditure goes through Amazon, so this is useless compared to my 12.5%-15% discount. Could be helpful with a couple of other outlets I use, probably not for Lidl, methinks 🙂

          • Freddy says:

Dare I ask how 12-15%….thinking Morrisons vouchers?

          • Shoestring says:

“The launch of Curve Cash is just one example of the many ways Curve simplifies people’s finances, constantly delighting them by combining all their debit and credit cards into one, and rewarding them with cash they can spend instantly.”

Well, complete blocks as far as I am concerned, I don’t pay HMRC anything so Curve has until now been completely useless (I don’t like the idea of paying Amex etc illicitly on another credit card, that’s just me, you do as you see fit).

Unless they add Lidl to the list, it wouldn’t be simplifying my finances but confusing it like b@gger£.

          • Rob says:

            Lidl is on the list.

          • Tim says:

Hi Freddy if you have an interest in B2B UK Amazon codes in volume. I might be able to help.

        • Shoestring says:

@Freddy 15% by using Tesco money off coupons to buy Amazon giftcards, it then gets a bit worse after the first one of the 3 MOCs we both get sent

          • Shoestring says:

what’s the bit about choosing 3 or 6 retailers at a time?

            sounds like a cop out

          • Andy S says:

even worse only lasting 90 days!

          • Tim says:

How do you get the 15% money off coupons from Tesco ?

          • Shoestring says:

through signing up to Clubcard, I guess

there’s nothing automatic about it, many others say they don’t get MOCs in the post

if you’re missing out, you could do worse than start a few more Clubcard accounts with slightly different details/email address to see if one of them triggers the MOCs

          • Andy S says:

            @Tim

I think the secret to getting these coupons is to not shop at Tesco for a while! I hadn’t visited any store for a couple of months, then suddenly got 3 coupons for £8 off £40+ spend. That’s 20 %

Never realised you could use them on gift cards though – I’ve got one left which I could try on an Amazon card!

    • Andy S says:

Yes, and as an early adopter I can keep the current scheme, which is much better IMHO. Who in their right mind would sign up for a new scheme that only gives rewards for the next 90 days, then diddly squat! The current range may be a bit crap, but I do well from Boots, Wilco and Argos!

      • Lady London says:

HI @AndyS what’s the benefit for Argos? do new cardholders get it or only grandfathered ones?

        • Andy S says:

I guess if it’s not on the new list it’s grandfathered! 1.5% as with all others on the free “blue” card

  • S says:

OT: BA 2-4-1 booking. Household account.

So my intended companion cannot come with me. Terms and conditions of the voucher say
    > Once travel using the Companion Voucher has been booked no name changes are allowed.

What are the odds that I could call them up and beg to make an exception to the rule so they would change the name of the companion to someone from my Family & Friends list?

Failing that, what are the odds that the seats would come up for redemption again?
    Travelling on 29th this month.

I, being the moron that I am, booked non-refundable hotels for the trip.

    • Rob says:

Very low chance of the computer releasing the seats back in peak season at short notice.

      Options:

cancel 2nd person and travel alone, getting the voucher back

cancel whole thing and hope all seats come back to rebook, and if not accept you will need to buy a cash economy ticket and travel alone to get some value from the hotels
