Get an IHG Rewards Club status match – including to top tier Spire Elite

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG Rewards Club has launched a status match promotion, offering 2,500 members with UK or US addresses the chance to get a status match to top-tier Spire Elite.

If are not currently top tier in another programme, IHG will match your mid tier status to either Platinum Elite or Gold Elite.

Full details are on their website here.

IHG Rewards Club

You will have your new status for the next 90 days, and you can retain it by staying a specific number of NIGHTS (note nights, not stays) during those 90 days:

If you match to Spire Elite, you need to do 10 nights in 90 days to keep your status

If you match to Platinum Elite, you need to do 5 nights in 90 days to keep your status

If you match to Gold Elite, you need to do 2 nights in 90 days to keep your status

This page of the IHG website shows the benefits you get at each tier.

This is how the match works:

Step 1:  Go to this page of the IHG website

Step 2:  Upload a screenshot showing your status with another major hotel loyalty scheme – here is the list of options:

“Accor – Le Club AccorHotels
Best Western – Best Western Rewards
Caesars Entertainment – Caesars Rewards
Choice – Choice Privileges
Hilton – Hilton Honors
Hyatt – World of Hyatt
Marriott – Marriott Bonvoy
NH Hotel Group – NH Rewards
Radisson – Radisson Rewards
Wyndham – Wyndham Rewards

Step 3:  Once your status is updated online, enjoy your new benefits for 90 days!

Step 4:  Try to complete the required number of nights to keep your new status until 31st December 2020

The deadline for applying for a match is 30th June.  However, only 2500 Spire Elite matches will be given, so apply quickly if you want a top tier match.

If you do not complete the required number of nights to keep your status, you can still retain it at a lower level.  By which I mean …. if you match to Spire Elite but only manage 5 nights in 90 days, you will not drop down to nothing.  You will drop to Platinum Elite, which only required 5 nights in the first place.

This offer is, almost word for word, a copy of the current Hilton Honors status match.

The snag is that IHG Rewards Club status has fewer benefits.  Virtually nothing is guaranteed – even at Spire Elite, you do not get free breakfast or a guaranteed late check-out.  You certainly don’t get guaranteed lounge access, although the majority of Crowne Plaza hotels in Europe will offer it – but not InterContinentals.

The bottom line is that it is certainly better to have the status than not to have it, but don’t expect miracles.

What I would say is that you should check out your targets for the current IHG Rewards Club Accelerate promotion too.  Whilst a lot of Accelerate offers were quite weak for the Summer period, the extra carrot of a Spire Elite upgrade may be enough to get you to switch some stays to IHG.

Remember to apply for your match before 30th June – and ASAP if you want Spire Elite.

PS.  Remember that IHG Rewards Club Platinum Elite status is a benefit of having the £99 IHG Rewards Club Premium Mastercard.  Frankly, you are better off paying £99 for the credit card – which has excellent benefits, see my IHG Premium Mastercard review here – than doing mattress run nights to complete a Platinum Elite status match.

Similarly, Gold Elite is a benefit of having the FREE IHG Rewards Club Mastercard.  Do the status match if you want, but you will have Gold Elite status permanently as long as you keep the free IHG credit card.  My IHG Rewards Club Mastercard review is here.

Spire – the top tier status i cannot be bothered to retain. Absolute rubbish… the best i got last period were several “Mint Club” chocolate biscuits from a Tupperware box.

    • Rob says:

Holiday Brent Cross gives you an orange Jacob’s Club biscuit ….

    • Kai says:

Club lounge access is guaranteed at China’s CP properties. And I have had a success rate of 100% at European CPs so far (where there is a club lounge), so not entirely useless..

  • Czechoslovakia says:

Afternoon all. Anyone know how long in reality it takes to process? Checking out of IC on Friday with a £1400 spend. 100% bonus points would be nice.

  • mvcvz says:

What do you lot all know that I don’t? I was IHG Platinum for what felt like decades, and have been Spire since its inception. I typically spend 80-100 nights per annum in IHG hotels, and have done for many years. I have not received or been offered a room upgrade or lounge access on even a single occasion, or drinks/food discount vouchers. I usually receive additional Priority Club points, which probably appear in my account around 70% of the time. What am I doing wrong?

    • Rob says:

Free drink vouchers have compulsory in Europe for a couple fo years now (or 500-600 bonus points, your choice).

Lounge for Spires at Crowne Plazas in Europe has been unofficial policy for a couple of years.

      • mvcvz says:

Approx 50% of my stays are in Europe. Have never been offered the choice. The only occasions I’ve been in a CP lounge is when I’ve paid for an executive room.

        • Rob says:

Bizarre. You should ask on your next stay what the agent sees in the system, because – whilst IHG is not consistent – it IS 100% consistent at giving out free drinks and bonus points for elites in Europe, even on reward stays.

    • John says:

My first question would be why have you continued to stay in hotels where you aren’t getting the advertised status benefits, meagre though they may be? Have you really “never” received an upgrade in 1000+ nights?

When I check-in, 100% of the time the front desk says “thank you for being a loyal Spire member” or something along those lines, which automatically prompts them to give out the drinks voucher or welcome points, and 50% of the time they then automatically try to upgrade me, or the manager already decided to upgrade me earlier. Usually they also have a welcome letter. Does this not happen with you? Do they greet you as a Spire then not do anything?

I have never not received status bonus points, unless the stay failed to post at all, but after contacting IHG and getting the stay to post, never need to chase up the status bonus.

Lounge access is about 25% of the time in CP, I think I just tend to stay a lot in the properties which follow the guidelines that it is not an official benefit. At the properties where they don’t offer lounge to all Spires, they probably offer it to people who have a history of spending lots of money with IHG and I don’t (I book the cheapest rooms to get the most points from all the promos)

      • mvcvz says:

I can absolutely confirm that I have never received an upgrade in well over 1000 nights, probably much closer to 1500 over the years.. My Spire status is generally (but by no means always) acknowledged verbally, and about 50% of the time also by letter. This letter confirms the number of bonus points to be credited. And that REALLY is it. Every single time.

In answer to your opening question, I continue to use IHG because a number of the hotels I use on a semi-regular basis are both very good and extremely convenient for my needs. It is also very easy to accumulate points for free stays.

        • Shoestring says:

Next few times, you could try asking upfront for better benefits due to your status & loyalty? Don’t ask, don’t get, sometimes.

        • Crafty says:

How do you know you’re not being upgraded? I hardly ever get told “you’ve been upgraded”, but often find I am in a “deluxe” rather than “superior” room or something to that effect.

    • Kai says:

Priority Club – I miss that name!

      • Robert J says:

I was checking into the CP in Istanbul recently when a colleague pulled out a Blue Priority Club Pass – definitely a blast from the past but they accepted it without question.

  • Robert J says:

How long has this offer been available? Has anyone been successful in getting matched?

Just wondering how long it may take? It said 6 weeks but I have a couple of stays coming up in the next month so just wondered if anyone had been confirmed quicker as would be great to get the 90 day period whilst I have my stays and not starting after I get back.

  • GLA flyer says:

Thanks for the heads up on this – I have just found out that I been status matched from Hilton Diamond to Spire Elite so it took 8 days from filing in the form on IHG’s website.

The more interesting part is that I used my Platinum Elite to status match to Hilton Diamond 4 weeks ago which I have now used to match to Spire Elite!

  • rj24 says:

I assume they ‘ran out’ of status matches as I used my Wyndham diamond to try and match from my ihg platinum.

I had an email this week to welcome me to platinum status…
