Get 50% off IHG Rewards Club hotel redemptions in Solihull

A new (well, rebranded) IHG voco hotel recently opened in Solihull.

voco is IHG’s new ‘conversion’ brand allowing existing hotels to switch to IHG without having to adopt the long list of ‘brand standards’ required to be a Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza etc.  You can learn more about voco here.

The first UK voco was St David’s in Cardiff.  This has now been followed by voco St John’s Solihull, which has presumably gained lots of yellow cushions, curtains and paintings over the last few weeks.

This hotel used to be the Renaissance Solihull, one of Marriott’s brands, before it was taken over by Kew Green Hotels.

Until 24th August, the hotel is offering 50% off all IHG Rewards Club points bookings.  This means that you can get a free night for just 12,500 IHG Rewards Club points, which is an excellent deal.

The voco St John’s Solihull hotel website is here if you want to find out more.

Fantastic news about Lufthansa coming to Newcastle. A shame it’s not FRA though but MUC still opens up some decent long-haul options!

    • TigerTanaka says:

I agree, we currently have no Star Alliance options at NCL, MME or LBA so this is a big boost to get to some of those Lufthansa only airports in Eastern Europe.

    • Harry T says:

I’m very excited too. Newcastle seems fairly badly served in general, except by KLM.

  • Dave Barron says:

OT – apologies if already covered recently but I’ve just managed to use the £25 off £40+ spend with Amazon / Amex Membership Rewards (AMEX25OFF)

I’ve stocked up with Pampers for my youngest son so a genuine cash saving for me and perfect timing before I imminently cancel my Platinum card.

In other news as a local to Newcastle I’m encouraged to see the addition of Lufthansa and will need to research collection and redemption options with miles and more / stat alliance ( via H4P of course!)

    • John says:

For a real cash saving I find the LIDL nappies to be great.

    • Shoestring says:

      nice one

unfortunately I changed my Gold card (broken magstrip) and the Shop with points page is not allowing new registrations…

      • Shoestring says:

try 2x Auchentoshan American Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70 cl £20 (sold by Amazon)

        use the code AMEX25OFF
use some Amex points to part pay (1p is enough)
pay the rest on your Amex card

you can always do a dummy purchase to see if you are eligible for the £25 saving

        • Olly says:

I’ve tried using the code a few times over the months with no success but just tried it with the 2 bottles of Auchentoshan and it worked. Thanks H 🙂 I think with the website readership they might sell out soon.

        • fivebobbill says:

          Brilliant Shoestring, great shout!
I hadn’t been able to get the code to work either so gave up, however just bagged 3 bottles of Absolut for £19.99 there delivered!
Would never have entered my mind to use it on alcohol 🙂

      • Shoestring says:

thanks but for some reason Amazon (your link) is not ‘seeing’ my new Gold card number or my wife’s green card – both there as payment cards but not as points paying cards

my old card is there but obvs can’t use it any more

        • Dave Barron says:

Try a dummy purchase adding the appropriate Amex card as a new method of payment to your amazon order. Then try my link to add that card to shopping points. Sounds like Amazon doesn’t recognise you using those Amex cards previously.

Apologies in advance if doesn’t work but worth a try 🤞

        • Dave Barron says:

You may also have to unenrol the old card first using my link?

        • Shoestring says:

worth a try, I did all that & even bought a packet of seeds on the new Gold card to see if that helps, all no good though

    • Craig says:

New Amex Plat but Shop With Points registration unavailable.

      • the_real_a says:

Same, new gold card. No registration available either…

  • Dave Barron says:

    Sorry Star not stat!

  • John says:

I was attracted by the odd 12500 point pricing and booked a night there taking the train to Birmingham (where I actually needed to be), but it wasn’t worth the savings. Only upside was free parking on the adjacent street.

  • Roger says:

OT – BA on business question
    https://headforpoints.com/2019/04/12/review-british-airways-on-business-programme/

On above page it says you can earn Expedia and still earn OnBusiness points
How does that work, do I need to supply FF number in addition to names of traveler within On Business?

The question really is how does BA know on third party booking to allocate on business points?

    • Roger says:

      Sorry, found the answer.

It is via Manage My Booking with an option to add On Business Account number

    • Rob says:

You can do it via Manage My Booking.

  • Nigel the Pensioner says:

Before everyone leaps in an Uber and heads to Marylebone to get the (direct) Chiltern train to Solihull to stay at the St John hotel……….don’t bother! Many years ago in the 70’s it was a bit of a grim place and frankly I’m surprised it hasn’t been knocked down and rebuilt. It was simply St John’s Solihull then, before becoming the St John’s Swallow (but nothing to do with the Swallow group, bought by Marriott). The Solihull area has nice houses in parts but you need a car to get to the gastro pubs that are plentiful in the surrounding countryside. Solihull itself has little to excite. Save your points!

    • TGLoyalty says:

It really isn’t that bad. The hotel itself is having a full refurb the old rooms are dire though so stay well away from them.

Solihull itself has changed a lot since the 70’s but surely this hotel would be a base to travel around the midlands area and not to take in the sights of Solihull (probably about a mornings activities)

      • Mark2 says:

Yes; ideal for Stratford, Warwick etc.

        • Lady London says:

Isn’t Solihull quite near the airport if you are stuck for somewhere to stay there?

          • John says:

Not particularly near. You might as well stay in Brum city centre if you don’t want to stay at the airport.

          • Leo says:

Yes it is reasonably close – much nearer than Birmingham. You might still prefer the city centre – but you’d have to want to be there in my view. I’m not a fan of the city centre.

        • John says:

Umm, hotels in Stratford or Warwick are ideal for those places. Paid £29 for HIX M40 J15 and got 60000 points out of that.

          • Lady London says:

Wow. How on earth did you get 6oK out of that. Was it last one of a decent accelerate target?

      • Rooster says:

The trip advisor reviews beg to differ about the hotel being good in areas apart from the room

  • Waddle says:

    OT: BAPP
Can the CS Agent manually transfer outstanding Avios before the statement date? I’m looking to cancel ASAP but have a large bucket of Avios which will not be transferred to my account for a few weeks.

    • Peter K says:

No, it’s a fixed transfer date. It seems some have cancelled and had the points go across anyway but most have not as the link between your card account and BA account is broken when you cancel.

      • Matt says:

I’ve had points transfer after cancellation consistently for quite a few BAPP and Spg cards. I wouldn’t risk it for a large number of points, but for a few hundred I do.

  • Anna says:

OT – has anyone else had an email saying that TripAdvisor has been hacked and they need to change their password?! Fortunately I’ve never booked anything via the site so hopefully the only thing any hacker could with my account is leave a review…

    • Kai says:

No, unfortunately you received this email because your password is leaked elsewhere. Tripadvisor is simply doing a match against the leaked database and acting a precaution.

    • ChrisC says:

remember to go direct to the trip advisor website itself and don’t follow any links in the email to change your password!

    • Graham Walsh says:

Yes I had that email too. Deleted it.
