  • ChrisC says:

I guess I’ll have a look tomorrow as have a few trips in mind but no hotels book.

But every time I’ve looked previously on Kaligo (and rocket miles) the price has always been the hotel or Expedia price PLUS the cost of the avios if you bought them direct from BA. Though with some exceptions if they are offering a large bonus for that hotel when it may be a better deal.

I suppose it’s a way around the annual limit on buying avios direct from BA though I wonder how many people don’t realise if they don’t want the avios they are basically over paying for the hotel.

    • The Original David says:

Isn’t part of the attraction if you’re expensing your hotel to someone else? I think it’s Kaligo that advertises “simple” invoices for “convenient” expensing, which translates to mean invoices that don’t mention any avios so your client/employer will happily pay for a nice avios bribe without realising.

I’ve never used Kaligo, to be clear.

      • ChrisC says:

But surely that would be dishonest – getting your employer to pay more for a room just so you can get some extra avios to use for yourself.

        • The Original David says:

I’d agree, but there’s plenty of profitable business to be made from dishonest customers!

        • mvcvz says:

Dishonest in the same was as me spending eight+ hours per day over this Friday/Saturday/Sunday “catching up” with work at home, whilst everyone else was enjoying a rare burst of UK sunshine, even though I’m only contracted to work Monday-Thursday each week? Try taking a ride on those nice swings and roundabout sometime.

          • The Original David says:

Fair, depends on the circumstances obviously, and at least Kaligo/Rocketmiles and the like give people options!

  • BJ says:

OT: Do people get instant approvals when applying for amex at weekends and outside office hours? I’m tempted to apply tonight to cover any possible further changes from amex 1st July.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Even if it isn’t instant the package should be whatever it was when you applied not when you were accepted.

      • BJ says:

…but I prefer not to have somebody see my churning history in front of them if it is reviewed 🙂

        • Mark2 says:

I churn a lot. I always get reviewed by a person and always accepted.
I do not believe that the system acts differently at the weekend.

          • BJ says:

No, I can confirm it doesn’t, happy and relieved to have got an automatic approval. I was just a little apprehensive as I recall some comments that it might be different outside office hours even though that’s hard to believe. No idea why I feel embarassed about the churning, Brighton staff themselves were likely the leaders of the pack 🙂

          • Freddy says:

Dont think they are that concerned on churning since the 2 year rule. Limited opportunity to churn on amex now

  • Anna says:

Following on from the piece on revenue based avios redemptions yesterday; BA don’t seem to have released a peak/off peak calendar yet, I hope this isn’t another sign of an imminent devaluation )-:

  • Strange says:

Why are people staying in far flung locations miles from Hong Kong? Is this genuinely just to save a few quid or a few points?

    • The Original David says:

Paying £180/night for a HIEx in Central can feel like a bit of a rip-off – if you’re staying for more than a couple of nights then finding something better value could be worthwhile.

      • Shoestring says:

The YMCA is actually very good value in a fantastic location – get over the fact you’re acting out a Village People fantasy, it’s just another hotel – maybe £115/ night for a double

    • N says:

In my case, cash is v tight and I can afford 100k Bonvoy points. Anywhere central will be double that.

      Any other ideas?

  • GeoffGeoff says:

This seems quite common for some retailers. Lots of complaints on FT.

  • Justin says:

Anyone had any issues with Amex offers not triggering?
Used two offers over the weekend, Byron and Harvey Nichols. Normally get a notification or an email almost instantly but had nothing this weekend.

    • Froggee says:

I didn’t get an email for Harvey Nichs but credit hit my account a few days later and no emails for Morrison’s either but they are also crediting. I used to get emails so Amex email fail?

  • Harry T says:

    @Shoestring
Thanks again for the tip on AMEX25OFF, Harry – managed to get it to work on my girlfriend’s Amazon account with my new Platinum card. I think it worked because I’ve not used the card on that account before.

  • Allen says:

Yes, 900 ish awarded by Curry’s in January disappeared on Friday night.
