Virgin Atlantic has brought back its ‘Miles Booster’ promotion – now renamed ‘Points Booster’ following the transition from Virgin Flying Club miles to Virgin Points.

‘Points Booster’ IS a potentially very good deal.  This version is as generous as it ever gets, both in terms of the discount and the number of points you can buy.

Whilst this offer ran regularly pre-covid, it hasn’t been seen for a while so I will run over how it works in details.

Miles Booster only works if you have a Virgin Atlantic cash or reward flight booked or have taken one in the last six months.  With this offer, you are able to buy an additional 300% of the base miles you will earn from the flight for just 0.71p each.

How Virgin’s Points Booster works

If you have a New York economy flight booked, for example, you would earn 6,916 base miles from your trip.

Miles Booster allows you to buy up to 20,748 additional miles for just 1p each. Plus, with this promotion, you would get an extra 20% to 40% bonus as well.

The bonus is staggered:

  • buy 1x miles flown and you get a 20% bonus
  • buy 2x miles flown and you get a 30% bonus
  • buy 3x miles flown and you get a 40% bonus

The maths in this article are based on buying 3x and getting the full 40% bonus.

Virgin Atlantic A350

If you maximised the Points Booster option for a New York economy flight, you would be able to buy a total of 29,047 Virgin Points for just £207.48.  That is 0.71p each, which is well worth considering.

You can retrospectively buy points via Points Booster for any Virgin Atlantic flights taken in the last six months, cash or reward, although this requires a call to Flying Club. Yes, even previously flown or currently booked redemptions count.

Note that – for flights which you have not yet taken – you will not receive your Points Booster points until after you have flown.

Even if you don’t have any current bookings, you may be able to take advantage of this based on recent flights you’ve taken.  At this price, I would consider the Points Booster deal if you know that you will be using them in the short or medium term. The only risk factor is that Upper Class seat availability with Virgin Atlantic is currently very tight, so you would be betting on the picture improving.

This offer runs until 30th June.

There is a glitch on the Virgin Atlantic website when it comes to checking points and status credits – many don’t show up in the breakdown several weeks after the flight has taken place.

Basically, you wonder if they have been credited at all and only those who keep a close eye on points might see the increase.

However, log in to Virgin Red and the breakdown is there.

Trying to figure out if it’s worth the pain of phoning the call centre.

Can anyone confirm what the base miles would be for a Z class upper flight redemption (Gold member) from LHR to LAS (RETURN)

It was a redemption, so none miles earning fare class (got tier points only).

Does this mean base miles (for the purpose of points booster) are just miles flown? So approx 5229 x 2?

Virgin website is transparent as mud :/

    • Rhys says:

Rob just got through in 5 minutes

      • AndyGWP says:

Ooh thanks – looks like my window is now! Will give it a go! 🙂

        • Rob says:

Even the recorded message says the wait is only 30 minutes now. I didn’t call for that reason though, I wanted to lock in a reward flight.

          • Froggee says:

Sorry – you’re actually using your Virgin Atlantic points? We’ll need a revised balance please.

          • Rob says:

Spookily yes, managed to redeem 150k (which given that in the last 8 years I’d only managed to spend 400k is good going!).

        • AndyGWP says:

Thanks @Rhys – through in 2 mins! (despite the 1 hour wait warning!)

For (my 😆) reference, the miles came in at:
          – LHR to LAS (return) at £313.56 and 43,898 points
          – LHR to MIA (return) at £259.54 and 36,322 points

The opportunity to deposit more money into a program with limited use opportunities, and the chance to pay £800 in cash for the points flight should one be available.

      Like

      • Chas says:

Completely agree. I’ve got a huge chunk of miles in Virgin (was always my ancillary programme), and I’ve completely diverted my non-Amex spend elsewhere now as to there is zero reason to accumulate more miles (no matter how cheap) when the likelihood of being able to use them (cost effectively) is close to zero

        • Rob says:

I booked 3x Business Paris to Dubai today for 50k plus £200 each for a one way.

        • Dave P says:

I totally agree, I have cira 400k left. All going at 55p per point to pay off my Orando Virgin holiday.
I have used them for NYC UC return this year, apart from that next to useless.
My curve fronted is now on the HSBC world eite, and Avios, hopefully a bit more flexibilty with them.
They need to sort out the programme, as it appears they are losing people (if they care)
