InterContinental Edinburgh The George hotel is now open

InterContinental Edinburgh is now ‘open’, although for this hotel the concept of ‘open’ is a complex one:

you can argue that it has re-opened, since it was originally an InterContinental until a few years ago when IHG sold it

you can argue that it never actually closed, since the rebranding from Principal The George – who bought the hotel off IHG and rebranded it, before IHG bought Principal and rebranded it again – has been done without the hotel closing its doors (the building has been a hotel since 1881)

InterContinental Edinburgh The George open

However you look at it, InterContinental is now back in the Scottish capital.  This is particularly good news for InterContinental Ambassador members who can now use their ‘free weekend night’ voucher at another UK venue.

We reviewed the benefits of InterContinental Ambassador here.  Principal spent a substantial amount of money renovating the hotel, and IHG has just done some additional work to reach ‘brand standards’, so it should look good.

As an IHG Rewards Club redemption, it costs 55,000 points per night.  This is a decent deal based on my 0.4p per point valuation for an IHG point.

You can find out more on the InterContinental Edinburgh website here.

It was exactly the same issue last time there was a bonus. All redemptions shown apart from the BA one. Took me almost a week to get it sorted w HSBC. It used to appear then disappear on the landing page.
Tnx for warning on exp dates too.

  • Cracker says:

I saw the 25% bonus offer when logging in this morning. However, they have not fixed a problem that was present last year and took me an age to sort with HSBC.

When converting points, the system is limited to FIVE DIGITS but it happily accepts 6 digits in the input field and then simply truncates your input. Real example – I put 332552 into the form and it moved 33254 (The first 5 digits, rounded down to the nearest even number for conversion at 2:1).

So I’ve done 4 smaller requests under 100000 to try and get them across and will be watching my Avios account with interest! HTH

    • AM says:

when you’re about to convert, does it actually show the bonus?
I just tried and it says the usual 2 points to 1 avios.

    O/T TdMB update
Day 6 – I’m still here, and the sound of thousands of crickets that jump all around my feet with every step, and the flutters of butterflies everywhere I look have been replaced by the sound of cowbells. I crossed over the Grand Col Ferret from Italy to Switzerland yesterday, and discovered just how much I like raclette last night. My legs are really quite sore, I’ve never attempted to climb a slope that steep for that long before!
You have all been so wonderfully generous and supportive, I’d love to be able to show you some of the pictures I’ve taken (for those that are interested) as a small way of saying thanks. It really is stunning here. Has anyone got any bright ideas about the best website for doing this? It would need to be able to cope with panoramas (the views are quite dramatically expansive, and most of the pictures I’ve taken are panoramas).

    • Spurs Debs says:

I’ve no idea as don’t do social media, but people are always telling me about Instagram? If that works you could just post the link if allowed.
Well done, I’m exhausted just reading your endeavours.

      • Cat says:

Panoramas don’t work on Instagram, sadly.

      • Cat says:

        … and thanks!

        • Polly says:

Am dizzy just reading your updates! Well done again. It does sound amazing…

          • Cat says:

Thanks Polly! I’ll admit to feeling a tad dizzy a couple of times yesterday – you really need a good head for heights for this one. I’m having an absolutely wonderful time, it’s just such a beautiful place to go for a stroll!

    • Brighton Belle says:

The dreaded Facebook handles iPhone panoramas extremely well. When they’re uploaded it doesn’t display a thin wide shot but an image that pans around as if you were there. As the viewer pans their device the image pans too just as if you were there.

    • John says:

Just upload them to imgur and share the links

Flickr may work for what you need

    • Stu N says:

Thanks for the update, sounds like the weather has taken a significant turn for the better. The high Alps are breathtaking, if you do work out how to post pics, look forward to seeing them.

    • Charlieface says:

Aosta Valley in general is gorgeous, and much quieter than some parts of the Alps. Was there last summer for a week.

  • Lloyd says:

Are you sure about Cox and Kings? The website for Laterooms and Superbreak have a notice from Malvern. A bit of digging suggests Cox and Kings disposed of the two companies in 2016 to Malvern?

    • Rob says:

Cox and Kings remained the major shareholder in Malvern and had been providing liquidity to it. It was possibly some sort of management buy-out vehicle in which C&K retained a holding but got the liabilities off their books. They decided they had had enough and Malvern had no other routes of raising cash. (This is how I understand it, could be wrong.)

      • Lloyd says:

Ok, just had a further look. Malvern Group is 49% owned by Cox & Kings and 51% by Adiuvat Investment Fund.

      • The Jetset Boyz says:

Checking Companies House – one of its three directors is also a director of Cox & Kings.

    • The Jetset Boyz says:

Malvern Group, which incorporates Late Rooms and York-based Superbreak Mini Holidays, known as Super Break, has ceased trading.

They intended to appoint administrators later today.

  • The Lord says:

OT – I seem to remember Avios redemption on Alaskan tends to increase about 3months out. Anyone with experience of redeeming on Alaskan?

    • Alex J says:

I don’t remember the redemption pricing changing, I was under the impression it’s static like most other Avios redemption schemes that don’t distinguish between peak and off-peak.

I’ve redeemed with them a few times, I find the easiest way to find awards is use aa.com. If the Alaska flight is available as a “MilesAAver” award, you can book it with Avios. You’ll need to get on the phone to BA as you can’t book Alaska flights through BA’s website at all.

  • James M says:

Ditto, I see no mention of it within online banking but based on the offer terms it would be reasonable to assume it applies to all – doesn’t say it’s targeted.

  • Tom W says:

O/T: I’m trying to book the following for the Virgin A350 to New York but on the details it still mentions the A330, is this correct or have they just not got round to changing the flight info for next year?

VS137 London to New York departing 11:50AM arriving 2:50PM
VS138 New York to London departing 7:00PM arriving 7:20AM (+1 day)

    • Rhys says:

They haven’t changed the scheduled aircraft yet. Not sure when that will happen.

      • Tom W says:

        Thanks Rhys.

        • Rhys says:

I stand corrected – have just managed to find at least one in the schedule! Are you sure you have the right day? From 25 Sep until 26 Oct it’s not on Thursdays, and between 27 Oct and 28 Mar 2020 it does not operate Tuesdays…

Have managed to spot the A350 both in September and March so looks like fully loaded, contra to my earlier comment.

          • Tom W says:

Ah might be because i was looking at June dates. I guess it may be a different schedule by then!

          • Rhys says:

28 March is the end of the winter schedule, so may be that Virgin haven’t scheduled exact aircraft types that far ahead.

  • george says:

the HSBC offer seems targeted, it does not appear as an option in my account (premier world elite)…

    • Cracker says:

FWIW @George, I only saw a “banner” (actually nearer square) advert, there was NOTHING in the process steps to indicate I was getting the promo – but I screen captured the advert and saved the t’s & c’s PDF in case I need them with HSBC
