InterContinental Edinburgh The George hotel is now open

InterContinental Edinburgh is now ‘open’, although for this hotel the concept of ‘open’ is a complex one:

you can argue that it has re-opened, since it was originally an InterContinental until a few years ago when IHG sold it

you can argue that it never actually closed, since the rebranding from Principal The George – who bought the hotel off IHG and rebranded it, before IHG bought Principal and rebranded it again – has been done without the hotel closing its doors (the building has been a hotel since 1881)

InterContinental Edinburgh The George open

However you look at it, InterContinental is now back in the Scottish capital.  This is particularly good news for InterContinental Ambassador members who can now use their ‘free weekend night’ voucher at another UK venue.

We reviewed the benefits of InterContinental Ambassador here.  Principal spent a substantial amount of money renovating the hotel, and IHG has just done some additional work to reach ‘brand standards’, so it should look good.

As an IHG Rewards Club redemption, it costs 55,000 points per night.  This is a decent deal based on my 0.4p per point valuation for an IHG point.

You can find out more on the InterContinental Edinburgh website here.

OT: I paid off £101 on one of my BA Holiday bookings yesterday but the BA 1000 avios offer is still showing as available on my AMEX app. I know the IT can be tricky but the email I just received from AMEX states it must be spent on BA Flights. Can anyone confirm if a BA Holiday payment counts in this offer?

    • AJA says:

      LewisB

The offer terms specifically state: Offer only available when you spend £100 or more at http://www.britishairways.com by 15 September 2019 with the BA Amex Card to which the offer is saved including cards loaded into a mobile wallet and only on spend in GBP. So that suggests a BA Holidays transaction would qualify.

But, did you save the offer to your card before you booked and paid BA? Or was it a payment of an existing booking?

The Amex Offers FAQs tab lists this question:
I made a purchase before I saved the Amex Offer to my Card. Will that purchase qualify for the offer?
Answer: No. You must save the offer to your Card first and then make your qualifying transaction using the same Card to receive the credits.

OT: Lounge advice. we are splitting up but traveling on 5th August.
    1. Gatwick to Las vegas in club world and also have priority pass. which
    2. another one leaving from Hetahrow terminal 5 on club world/priority pass?

And a random question: my sister has 3 priority passes (own card +supplementary)-can she bring in 6 people including herself?

    • Shoestring says:

no – it’s not 2 entries per card but cardholder + guest, so she could bring in 3 guests

she might get away with it, of course, esp somewhere like Grain Store

      • boi says:

So Harry since I have UK platinum and IDC platinum….do I bring in 2 guests (total 3 including me)? and how do I do that….I am worried I might mess it up but we are travelling with another family in the USA (internal economy flights) and would love to bring them in.
She has her own UK plat, UK supplementary plat and IDC sup.

        • Shoestring says:

you said your sis had 3 PP cards, each card (if they’re the Amex Plat type) is entitled to entry for cardholder + 1 guest – she can show 3 PP cards in her name and also bring in 3 guests, PP would be hit for 6 entries

          • boi says:

Thanks. Now I understand. Thats what we will do. She brings 3 guests and I will bring 2. And Hubby 2. Poor Amex…..

          • Shoestring says:

probably poor PP org I reckon, though maybe somebody else could venture an opinion

ie Amex presumably buys or otherwise acquires the PP cards – from PP parent co – but question: who then foots the lounge entry bill? or is it free PP cards, but Amex pays £15/ 20 per entry?

I guessed it was Amex negotiating a price per card, say, £100, paying it – then all costs after that fall to PP organisation?

OT – Lloyds. My letter finally arrived today advising of the changes coming “in just over two months’ time” (surely they are required by law to give you an exact date?!) Also got till the end of the card year (Feb) to earn another voucher. We got the IHG premium card recently so will move non-Amex spending to this.

  • Lyn says:

O/T – Thanks to Stu N and the other person (sorry have forgotten your name) who helped with advice re accompanying my husband through First Wing early check-in and entry to the Concorde Room. (where I am writing this). All very simple and comfortable, even though my flight is much later than his and just short haul, but I was very glad to know what to expect. Thank you.. Now I just hope I can find the tunnel walkway back from terminal B or C.

  • Shoestring says:

O/T so Thomas Cook Group hit 10p again! Unfortunately I was messing about in the garden so missed that peak, now 9.5p, so somebody else in the DM shares competition could easily be ahead of me for the £500 weekly prize – I would have been up over 100% in the week, which is how it gets judged – my only hope I reckon is to hold steady and see if it rises into the close.

[The shares surged 23% to 8.60 pence at 12:21 p.m. in London [10p at one point!]. They have increased 92% since investor Neset Kockar disclosed the stake on Wednesday.
“We believe Thomas Cook has more value and potential than what is being discussed recently, particularly with the skillset and complementary capabilities Anex Tour shall put forward,” Kockar said in an emailed statement on Friday, referring to his own travel company.]

    • Shoestring says:

nothing I can do except wait for the close 🙂 – might have missed the peak when I was in the garden – currently under 9p so no point selling now

  • tracy says:

O/T new co-op offer on my Santander card, great for paying council tax at paypoint, no avois or hotel points but think I’d rather save 5% 🙂

    • Rui N. says:

Which card is that? Is there a need to have a current account with them?

      • Shoestring says:

similar cashyback offers on Halifax current a/c/ debit card – eg as above 5% Co-Op, good for council tax discount, but if you ignore the 5%, a couple of months later you get offered 10% (max £30 discount)

      • tracy says:

I have a Santander current account

    • Alex W says:

I also have 10% back on Holiday Inn and HIE

  • tracy says:

Another O/T, my lloyds avios a/c, I was charged interest in May in my 29 months interest free period, phoned them got it refunded and was ensured it won’t happen again. Checked in June, it was fine, checked yesterday and another interest charge was added. Phoned again, refunded again. Was told they have balance transferred my balance to another a/c so need to reapply the terms and conditions. Just a heads up for anyone like me who had an interest free period on the account…only 5 months left now 🙂

    • Gill says:

Same happened to my OH. Raised a complaint on the website and fixed first time. Lloyds IT systems really are hopeless but their complaints team have been very helpful.

      • tracy says:

Yes, we thought we had fixed it too but new interest charge just appeared again for July….

    • Alex W says:

Kick up a stink and they will give you compo. I must have had £500 out of them.

  • Dave says:

OT – Looks like the pay offer for HAL is going to be rejected with strikes likely on Monday and Tuesday at Heathrow.
