  OT – I have a work Hilton booking made through my employer, which has now cancelled the trip, but the hotel is none refundable. I can check in on my mobile app. Will I still get the points if I check in through the app? Surely they won’t be able to know if I actually turned up or not? The room is prepaid already.

    Well, your room will look unoccupied for a start! They will know as you won’t have accessed the room using either a room key or a digital key.

    Last year I was unable to use a prepaid, non-cancellable stay in the DT at NCL, because BA got us to LHR so late that we missed the connection. I had checked in and chosen a specific room before leaving MAD.
    We got back to NCL before check out time, so I asked at reception if I needed to check in to get the points, at least. Check in person (very pleasant on that occasion) assured me that I would get the points anyway, which was true.

  The article outlining the upcoming Bonvoy changes this coming week states that “It appears that existing ‘Points Advance’ bookings are ‘safe’”. The wording of that sentence sounds a little unsure so I’m wondering if I should transfer over MR points today to cover a 35,000 Saturday night at the Langley for December.

  I would not mind waiting until closer to December as I may have to cancel and would have not much use for the Bonvoy points for anything else.

    Provided it’s refundable why not book now? Opinion on here has been price of this hotel is expected to go up not down.

      Trying to weigh up the risk of converting from Amex MR now and get the voucher or wait until later. Sounds like the booking is locked in at this amount of points as the previous article says it “appears” that this would be the case. Looks like there is some doubt there.

      If I transfer now and cancel I’m left with 35,000 bonvoy points that I have little to no use for right now as opposed to ~25,000 MR points.

      Also apologies if it’s not clear, I have booked the hotel, but using Points Advance and the rules surrounding this are changing next week.

      I’m just looking for confirmation that the rules are changing for new bookings going forward and not existing ones. And if this isn’t 100% clear would be happy to hear suggestions on what I should do.

        It’s clear that’s how things will work for bookings made from the 14 the onwards but Robs article from a few weeks ago says:

        “It appears that existing ‘Points Advance’ bookings are ‘safe’ although if you have more than five then some will be cancelled. If you have one in place by 14th September, you will just pay the price in force on the day of booking.”

        If this is true then I am in no rush to transfer my points. I’m just a tiny bit concerned over the use of the phrase “It appears”.

        As you have said the transfer rate is pretty poor and the only reason I’m happy to do so is because the 25,000 MR is worth a £400 night at the Langley. The poor rate is why I don’t want to make the transfer should I need to cancel.

        Marriott Bonvoy will honour up to 5 Points Advance bookings made before Sept 14th (ie at standard rate), so you’re OK

        in fact you have a slight advantage: if standard rate (booked now) becomes off peak after the changes, you can cancel & save 5000 Bonvoys

        so you are OK to keep your flexibility and don’t need to apply the redemption certificate before Sept 14th
