Get £50 Marriott hotels cashback with your American Express card

For what I think is the first time, Marriott has teamed up with American Express for a cashback offer.

It seems widely available.  You may see it under the ‘Offers’ tab on one, none or all of your online American Express statement pages.  Remember to check for each card you have.

You will receive a £50 statement credit when you spend £200+ at selected Marriott hotels in Europe by 31st December.

Marriott American Express cashback deal

The key word is ‘selected’.  The list runs to eight pages, however, so there is a good chance that your preferred hotel is on.

There are two things to remember:

for non-UK stays, you will be paying a 3% FX fee for paying with your American Express card which, assuming you have a 0% FX fee card in your wallet, means you’re losing at least £6

it is not clear if the deal is cumulative or not – when these offers run with Hilton, they are based on cumulative spend

We should find out from readers within a couple of weeks whether cumulative spend works or not.

Marriott has still not launched its Autumn promotion, unlike the other major chains (our main article today rounds up all of the current offers), so you need to bear that in mind too.

Spending £3000+ at DFS (I think there’s a sale on) Anyone know of a Mile earning opportunity.

    Thanks

    • xcalx says:

I can pay via paypal 🙂 as they don’t accept amex, spend target hit for BA paid card.

      • xcalx says:

Thanks. Went to store to look at what we were buying and card machine accepted Amex even though its not listed online.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I would be wary of PayPal/curve and anywhere like DFS.

    • cvz says:

Are you staging a hostile takeover bid?

  • Kathy says:

OT: I currently have a trip to Hong Kong booked for 19th Nov and am starting to think that a plan B might be required, given the continuing disruption there.

I am flying to Delhi for work and am currently booked on points from DEL-HKG on Cathay in business, returning HKG-LHR in Club on BA on 26th November on points.

I have 10k Avios, 30k Amex points, and 80k Virgin Atlantic points at my disposal. I am a solo female traveller so feeling safe is a priority.

Anyone got any suggestions for alternate destinations I could get to on points?

    • Shoestring says:

Thailand is an obvious choice, very friendly to all & single women have nothing extra to fear, it’s not a particularly dangerous country in the tourist places. You’re spoilt for choice in terms of things to do, Thailand has everything, esp food and beaches! You’d want to avoid the lower Gulf ie Koh Samui etc (too rainy) but Bangkok & N Thailand or Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Phuket and Koh Lipe should all have better weather (than the previous month) by mid to late November.

Or, say, Singapore – but I’d struggle to spend more than a few days there, personally.

    • John says:

There is no safety issue in Hong Kong (more likely to get hit by a vehicle in Thailand), but there is a good chance you will be inconvenienced or disrupted particularly if roads are blocked and trains are shut down.

I wouldn’t go to Thailand if the only way back to the UK is to change your BA redemption as the BA flight is not particularly great. Why not just visit other places in India? Otherwise if you are using Avios or Virgin miles realistically you are limited to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the dreaded (by some) Middle East

      • Team Plat says:

I second Kuala Lumpur. Fantastic food in such a vibrant city.

      • Kathy says:

I don’t want to visit India as a tourist – I definitely wouldn’t feel safe as a solo female traveller. My Indian colleagues will look after me on my work visit.

  • Kathy says:

I should add, I booked my one-way return from HKG with a Lloyd’s upgrade voucher, so cancelling that only gets me 39k points back. The DEL-HKG leg cost me 37500 points.

When I booked this trip back in Feb it seemed like the bargain of the century, since work are paying for the flight to Delhi!

    • BJ says:

All depends where you think you would like to go? Personally, I would keep the HKG return flight, you could spend a night or two in Macao before returning home. How about Delhi- Tokyo and Osaka-HKG on JAL using avios? Or just use cash flights on Indigo to Bangkok and then Air Asia to Macao, flights short and inexpensive. Many reputable female guides in Bangkok to show you around safely.

      • Kathy says:

I would love to visit Japan – I was saving Virgin points towards an ANA return to there. Was hoping for longer than a week but hey-ho. That or Phuket sound like a solid plan B should Hong Kong get too scary.

I reckon I’ll wait and see over the next couple of weeks what happens.

    • BJ says:

On a technical point, whatever you do, do not cancel your HKG-LHR flight because you will lose the voucher. If you call, they will allow you to change that to another flight in the same zone flying in the same cabin provided award seats are available. To do this you need to look for availability for flights to LHR on BA in CW from Zone 7, for example BKK and PVG but not KUL or SIN which are zone 8. PVG is relatively easy, BKK less so.

    • CV3V says:

Keep the HKG – LON flight. Fly from DEL to SIN or KUL (or both), it won’t be the same experience as HKG but will be very similar. From SIN and KUL there are lots of MAS and CX flights to HKG and for a solo traveller decent availability. MAS annoyingly only seem to release 1 redemption seat per cabin.

If you do want to take a chance on HKG then there will be some great hotel deals, HKG is a big place and its not that the whole city is affected, but when the MTR is closed(yesterday) or the airport train is affected (its managing to stay open) then as a tourist it would cause problems. If you fly into HKG you could stay at airport hotel (Regal) the night before flight to LHR and not go into city.

  • zaza says:

OT, For what it’s worth, although there’s often some BA bashing here, my dad had to have minor surgery 2 days before our cash non-refundable CW flights to BKK, meaning he and my mum couldn’t fly, and BA refunded in full when I called them up. I’m Bronze status, they are both Blue. I thought it was pretty good of them.

Also OT, now at Ritz Carlton Langkawi and ZOMG. So far, definitely holding its own vs FS Mauritius and Viceroy Sugar Beach St Lucia.

  • edwin says:

For the Marriott offer, can I use three amex cards to pay a 600 pounds bill and get the credit on every card?

    Thanks~

  • Eddie Davies says:

Thinking of using my 241 to fly to KL then to Ho Ch Min and the back from Phonom Pen. Will I be able to book straight through or will I need to spend time at KL and change planes/carriers each time? How easy is it to redeem to KL in Business Class? TIA.

  • Ruben says:

Anyone verified if the Marriott offer is £200 in one go or can be multiple transactions?
