Conrad New York Midtown hotel now open – a good value Hilton Honors redemption

Back in April, we told you about a very interesting new Hilton Honors redemption option that was on the way in New York – Conrad New York Midtown.

The good news is that the hotel officially opened on 1st October.  It was never actually closed, but the renovation was so chaotic (the hotel has had no restaurant for most of the year, for example) that the Conrad branding was kept off it until everything was ready.  It is now.

The history of Conrad New York Midtown

Back in 2017, Hilton quietly look over management of The London NYC hotel.  This is a property with a troubled history which opened as an unbranded ‘virtually all suite’ hotel at entirely the wrong point in the economic cycle.  Readers with long memories may remember that Gordon Ramsay ran the restaurant and it gained two Michelin stars within a year of its 2006 launch.  There was also a branch of Maze at one point as well as a high profile bar.

A substantial refurbishment programme was launched by Hilton which has, by all accounts, transformed the hotel.  What has not changed is that this remains an ‘all suite’ hotel.

The Conrad New York Midtown website is here.  It is located on West 54th – for comparison, the southern boundary of Central Park is West 59th.

This is the 2nd Conrad hotel in New York

There is already a Conrad in New York in Battery Park – see here.  I like this hotel a lot – see my Conrad New York Downtown review here – because it is also ‘all suite’ and I have stayed there 3-4 times.

In a city where hotel rooms are not exactly spacious, being guaranteed a suite, often with a view of the Hudson river, was always a good result.  The location has also got a lot more attractive in recent years as the World Trade Centre redevelopment concluded and new attractions such as the Oculus transport hub and the revamped Brookfield Place shopping centre took shape.

For those of you who insist on being in Midtown, you now have a good points alternative.

The Conrad New York Midtown on points

Let’s get one thing out of the way first.  Conrad New York Midtown is not a bargain, coming in at 95,000 Hilton Honors points.  This is as expensive as it gets.  However, you are getting a lot for your money.

Let’s take a look at the Conrad New York Midtown website for a stay in early November.

For 11th November, for example, I can book a City View One Bedroom Suite (525-550 sq ft) for 95,000 points or $589 inc tax Advance Purchase.  $589 is actually one of the cheaper nights.

This works out at 0.55p per Hilton Honors point, which is substantially above my typical 0.33p valuation.

If you have Hilton Honors status, you should note that there are another eight room categories available for cash (Park View One Bedroom Suite, Park View Executive One Bedroom Suite, City View Two Bedroom Suite, Sky Suite, Atrium Suite, Apartment, Park View Apartment, The Penthouse).  This means that your potential upgrade could be very good if you book into a City View One Bedroom Suite originally.

All of the photographs in this article are of the One Bedroom Suite.

You can still buy Hilton Honors points with a 100% bonus

It this deal looks interesting, remember that Hilton Honors is running a promotion offering a 100% bonus when you purchase 5,000+ points.

The Hilton ‘buy points’ page is here.

Regular readers of Head for Points will know that I tend to value Hilton points at 0.33p each.  You are paying 0.38p ($800 / £612 for 160,000 at the top end) here if you buy the maximum so the maths in general doesn’t work.

However, the maths DOES work at Conrad New York Midtown as I showed above, where you are getting well over 0.5p per point.

Hilton also does ‘five nights for the points of four’ if you have Hilton Honors status.  As Hilton will status match you from any other hotel scheme where you may have status – see this article – most HFP readers should qualify for this.  Five nights would cost you (95,000 x 4) 380,000 points which would cost $1,900 with this deal.

The snag is that you are capped at buying 160,000 points per year.  However, remember that you can pool points between Hilton members for free so it is now easier for different people to buy points and merge them together.  New members of Hilton Honors cannot buy points immediately so you cannot open additional accounts just to take advantage of this offer.

You can buy points via this link.  The offer ends on 22nd October.

Conclusion

You can find out more about Conrad New York Midtown on its website here.  Given the location, the size of the rooms and the good value per point, it is well worth a look on your next New York trip.

It does look an interesting option on points, but with so many hotels in NYC, would most tourists really pay $600 / night?

Hilton Millennium has a Junior Suite for $399, when I last stayed there I was offered an upgrade to a luxury suite that retailed at > $750 but I turned it down as the Junior Suite had better views of the then new 1 WTC.

Speaking of views, looking at the stock photography on the official website it appears some rooms look towards Central Park, maybe other landmark buildings are also visible from the hotel.

Have you heard anything about the original Waldorf Astoria NY reopening, sounds like majority of rooms are to be sold as condos with only 350 (of more than 1000) being bookable hotel rooms.

  • Bootlace says:

I stayed here last week with wife and son, ( I also stayed two nights in the Kimpton Eventi on the same trip) I used 95000 points per night. Is it a good use of points? questionable is my answer. Yes the rooms are very large, the bathroom and lobby area of our suite was bigger than our room in the Kimpton, The living area also huge. In order to get a view of Central Park you need to be on the 40th floor or higher, and have an odd numbered room, otherwise the views are of and adjacent office building. The room was atheistically quite plain and cold despite the money spent on renovations, although perfectly functional with all amenities you would expect. The restaurant and bar were not open on 29/30th, so we got a $30 credit each per day for F&B. The quality of our orders was good and was delivered promptly. The hotels location on 54th street is unquestionably good for Central Park, and the short walk to Times Square or Rockefeller Centre. There is also an Avis car hire location literally next door should you require it. The scaffolding around the entrance of the hotel doesn’t do it any favours.

The public space is very poor, and the seating limited to 4 seats next to the concierge desk. It doesn’t help that there is a large art display in the lobby which consists of a lady in a bathing costume reclining on blow up swan! Despite this I would stay again if I needed a large room and was travelling with other three sons, if I was on business, and expense’s it’s the Barclay or Park Hyatt for me.

I’m still waiting for the extra points, which Amex CS told me can take 2 months to reach me! Why?

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Good luck. Took me nearly 6mths last time and their CS was useless.

  • Tom says:

I agree with John. Just because the hotel would otherwise cost $600 for a night doesn’t mean that you are getting $600 for your points.

That is only true if you would have spent $600 on a hotel night anyway. I never have and never would.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

      Then you miss Rob’s meaning.

They clear have $600 of value if they can be redeemed for a $600 value room. I don’t see how you can dispute that. Now, just because you wouldn’t normally spend $600 doesn’t change that arithmetic unless you’re arguing that a ‘night’ has a fixed value somehow, and that you get the same value at a Hampton as at a Conrad on the basis that you’d never spend more than $250 on a room?
