How I got a great hotel deal from Melia’s Black Friday ‘buy points’ offer

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On Friday, I covered a very generous ‘buy points’ offer from Melia Hotels.  Initially I thought that the offer was only available to people who bought points gift cards from Amazon Spain (link here), but it turned out that Melia had reduced its ‘buy points’ prices online to match.

Most people seem to have missed the value that this deal offered.  I didn’t see our article picked up by anyone else.  More fool them.

Here is an example to show you how good it was.

ME London at a large discount

Every July, my brother and his family come to London for Wimbledon.  I have always offered to sort out their hotel accommodation for them, since this is generally the most expensive week of the year for London hotels.

I decided to book them into ME London, Melia’s funky luxury lifestyle hotel on the Strand.

Here is the pricing for Saturday 4th July (click to enlarge):

ME London at a large discount

As you can, a reassuringly expensive £599 for Bed & Breakfast.  And he needs two rooms.

This price is not out of line.  InterCon Park Lane is £793, whilst Holiday Inn Camden Lock is £268.  Admittedly, there are better deals at some hotels.

This is what it costs for MeliaRewards points:

ME London at a large discount

We’re looking at 51,412 points for Bed & Breakfast.  Whilst an odd number, this is the standard price for B&B at ME London.  I saw the same points price on offer on dates when the cash price was far, far lower than £599.

And what does it cost to buy 102,824 points?  (51,412 x 2 rooms)

ME London at a large discount

The answer is €370.17, or £320.

The points post instantly and I immediately made my points booking.

I picked up two rooms at ME London, retailing for £599 each, for £160 each.  You can’t argue with that.  For comparison, the best IHG alternative for that price, including breakfast, was the Holiday Inn Express Earl’s Court, which is not exactly comparable with a luxury five star hotel on the Strand.

Here is another example from a reader who emailed to say he booked INNSiDE New York (Anika reviewed INNSiDE New York here) for 3 nights in May.  Here is a cash price of £667.64, which includes taxes:

ME London at a large discount

…. and for points, the total needed is 71,222 MeliaRewards points:

ME London at a large discount

…. which costs you €256.40 (£221):

Buying and immediately redeeming points at INNSiDE New York means you pay £221 for three nights instead of £667.64.  Importantly, the redemption is also fully refundable whilst the cash rate I quoted is non-refundable.

I don’t know if this offer will still be running on Tuesday or if it was only for Cyber Weekend.  The Amazon Spain page is here for buying postal gift cards – the offer price was from €126 per 35,000.  If it shows from €210 per 35,000 then the price has gone back up.  Similarly, you can try buying points on the Melia website – these post instantly – to see if you get the same rates I quote above.

Have a read at Friday’s article first before you go down the Amazon Spain route.

You may well have missed out now, but if so this is still one to consider for Black Friday 2020 or whenever Melia next runs a major ‘buy points’ promotion.

Just used it for NY, 3 nights around £200 in March. (+$35 per night resort fee payable when there)
Thanks Rob, that’s a steal, even better than the 50% Hilton in Asia offer!!!

  • Neil Donoghue says:

Rob, I am absolutely speechless! I have just booked a week in Ibiza half board at the Melia for £82 a night in the middle of August. The cash rate is £179 per night. How on earth two people can stay in Ibiza per night for £41pp with breakfast and dinner is beyond me….I think this might be the greatest deal you have ever posted!

    • Shoestring says:

could be an element of double whammy here, ie combining half price points with 50% off defined Cyber Monday prices

in any case – great booking/ find!

      • Neil Donoghue says:

I did look at using half price points with cash. The rate wasn’t much more expensive but what sealed the deal for me was that the booking was fully refundable using points and it wasn’t using points & cash….The backup plan is that if I have to cancel the booking, I will transfer all the points to avios or just find another hotel.

        • Shoestring says:

I just bought a few more points & it reset expiry date of all points to 4th Dec 2020

          • Neil Donoghue says:

Well in that case, for the sake of buying 1,000 points for €15 or whatever the normal rate is, these points might be very handy indeed! I still have my gold status from the Amex plat so hopefully I get a cheeky upgrade as well.

    • sloth says:

      just bought some more now

      • Jody says:

Whenever I click on it it just says access denied. Prior to that the page was coming up, but couldn’t find any link at all for buying points.

        Weird!

        • sloth says:

try on the app…although i did just buy mine on the website

        • Jody says:

Just tried again in an incognito window, managed to find a buy points section, but no link to click. Whole page looking very weird for me to be honest.

Same thing happened in internet explorer.

        • sloth says:

ive tried again on the website and i can still access it to buy if i wanted…using explorer

      • sloth says:

strangely this second purchase has reset my points expiry to 01/08/2021…

        • Jody says:

Just tried again on explorer, and this time it worked. Very very odd.

        • idrive says:

After thinking about it a bit I decided to proceed to buy the points as I currently frequently travel to Spain and other places where properties are available and to increase my hotel pots.
But I truly believe there is value in some venues:-) not sure if what we see now are cyber monday points pricing but we will discover it soon in the next few days.
Is it possible to cancel and get all points back for all room redemptions just in case i am not sure about the dates?

    • Johan says:

Neil, do you recall what hotel and what the name of the rate that you booked were called?

      • Neil Donoghue says:

It was the Sol House Ibiza Johan! You won’t find anything close in Ibiza for the price I paid! Absolutely madness to be honest

      • Neil Donoghue says:

The rate was also 23,202 per night for accommodation only & 27,001 for Half board. I can still see availability for the dates I booked last night so you shouldn’t struggle.

        • Shoestring says:

I told my wife (for one of her mini breaks with my daughter) & she said ‘I’m *not* going to Ibiza, I don’t care how cheap it is!’

Shame – as I gather away from the party scene it’s very pleasant

    • Brasov says:

Was this the Sol Ibiza Hotel?

  • Shoestring says:

    still open for now!

  • Brasov says:

Cancellation policies seem to often be 24 hours for Mélia.

So if I have a reservation for Saturday 14 December, until what time can I cancel for free?

    • Neil Donoghue says:

Mine says I must cancel 7 days in advance to receive a full refund! A little strange but I will take it

  • Shoestring says:

The Ibiza deal is still there – and so are the cheap points – 1 week in peak August at the Melia Sol House Ibiza, half board (breakfast & dinner included), 189000 points (£575)

    • Freddy says:

Pool and surrounding area don’t look great even in their own pics but don’t think Ibiza in August is my scene

  • AJ says:

Booked the madrid 5* hotel for 56,000 points over a weekend. Cash rate was around £500, this worked out less than £170 with 2000 points that were already sitting in my account (no idea why). Thanks Rob, this has to be the best ‘black friday’ deal around.

  • Liz says:

Just a word of warning on this – I tried to buy points late on Tuesday night. The website crashed during the payment process and I didn’t get any confirmation emails (and have no points in my account) but have been charged.
