Virgin Atlantic’s San Francisco airport lounge joins Priority Pass

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

As of today, the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse in San Francisco has joined Priority Pass.

Don’t get too excited though.  It is only open to Priority Pass cardholders from 6am to 12.15pm.  These are times when Virgin Atlantic does not have any flights of its own.  You won’t be getting in with one during Virgin’s flying hours.

This is the fourth Clubhouse in the US to join Priority Pass, following New York Newark, Washington Dulles and Los Angeles.

You won’t get to experience the standard Virgin Clubhouse catering, because a substantially reduced offering is generally in place when the lounge is only serving Priority Pass customers.  With no Virgin Atlantic passengers to impress, it is purely open to make money for the airline, which means cutting the service available so it can make money off the £15 or so that Priority Pass will pay per guest.

That said, no-one loses here. Virgin Atlantic gets to generate some revenue, Priority Pass gets to increase its footprint and Concourse A passengers at San Francisco International get somewhere new to hang out.

You can find out more about the lounge on the Virgin Atlantic website here and on the Priority Pass website here.

You can buy a Priority Pass here.  Alternatively you receive two free Priority Pass cards, each of which allows a free guest (so a family of four is covered) with American Express Platinum.

Our full review of Priority Pass is here if you don’t know anything about it.

Thanks Rob/Ayden. Does anybody know if we can apply two (or preferably even more) of these AF gift cards against one flight reservation?

    • Yawn says:

If it works the same as compensation vouchers (and I’d assume so), two is the maximum

    OT Monese:
I signed up for a Monese account last week for their gift card promo. Successfully did that, but immediately afterwards they locked my account because they’ve “detected I’m in the USA”, even though I’m not and haven’t been there for years. What I did do was leave my phone connected to a US VPN when I registered in the Monzo app, and I’ve emailed them to tell them that, but so far they’ve ignored me.

Does anyone have any experience of whether their customer service ever actually responds to email? The rest of the app is now blocked to me so I don’t want to miss the next gift card promo!

    • The Original David says:

Sorry, that should read “*Monese* app”. Monzo doesn’t come into this at all, other than having a similar name…

      • Shoestring says:

yep if you look up Monese’s first £100 giftcard promotion on HUKD, (go to end of thread), thread shows it went wrong for some people so they needed email resolution from Monese – they eventually got responses, yes, though some also used Twitter & Facebook

  • paulm says:

OT – Can anyone recommend any hotels in Cape Town ? In and around center or Waterfront.

    • Rob says:

One & Only if money is no option and you want a Dubai-style resort. The Westin is technically just outside the Waterfront (by about 30 seconds walk) – decent hotel but that 30 seconds makes the difference if the heavy security inside the Waterfront zone keeps you happy. Cape Grace for people for whom money is no object but dislike Dubai-style resorts. Radisson is good choice for families and points collectors because, amazingly, they put up their 2-bed suites for the standard 70,000 points (again, this is outside the ‘official’ Waterfront but is sea-side). There is also the new hotel cum museum and the Victoria & Alfred which is mega-central on the Waterfront.

      • paulm says:

thanks Rob, unfortunately the One and Only will be out of my price range, but will take a look at the Radission.

By the way, I want to book the Intercon in Johannesburg Santon – do you know if Emyr can do anything there.

        • Rob says:

For a 2-night stay, yes, assuming it is one of 80+ IC’s on IHG’s ‘preferred partner’ scheme.

This article https://www.travelhub365.net/the-hub/introducing-the-ihg-luxury-lifestyle-program explains what the benefits are. This is NOT Emyr’s website though, so contact him via our enquiry form or email him direct if you have his info.

You DON’T get free lounge access – this is only for InterCon’s which are part of the Virtuoso booking scheme, which is mainly just the top ones (London, Paris etc).

    • Gringo says:

Highly recommend Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel

    • Craig says:

Uber is so cheap and whilst it is nice to be by the waterfront, getting there and back is relatively straightforward.

    • Grondair says:

Radisson Red is a great option and right in the waterfront area. Bit ‘trendy’ as you’d expect from their Red branding with heavy emphasis on their app but we enjoyed it. Great breakfast buffet, clean modern rooms and the roof top bar with sunset views of Table Mountain was fun.

    OT:
Anyone got email from Monese asking about source of funds and why they opened an account?
I can easily show my payslip for source of fund element but not sure how to answer “purpose of account”

I have put less than £2000 through it so wouldn’t call it abuse.

    • Neil Donoghue says:

Wow – That’s a new one to me! I have been asked by Revolut but not by Monese. Just provide payslips / bank statement

      • Lady London says:

I thought £10,000 was the threshold in the UK for anyone to be bothered about potential money laundering? And therefore at £10k reasonable to question you about where your funds are coming from.

If they were asking me about a measly £2,000 I think I’d be tempted to respond by asking them to state the reason why they are asking and any concerns they may have since it is such a low amount.

Is there anything in law that prevents them being unreasonable like this?or anything that means they have to come up with a good reason for asking you about such p***** sums?

    • Michael says:

Not exactly the same but I received this email from Monese a few days after opening an account:

      Hello,

      Thank you for choosing Monese!

In order to complete setting up your new Monese account, we just need a little bit more information before we proceed.

Please can you provide the following information?

      • Your current occupation
      • Your main purpose for opening a Monese account

In order to move things along quickly, we require a response within the next 3 working days to open your Monese account.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

      • Lady London says:

That looks like them collecting marketing information to me rather than questioning anything specific you might be doing.

I respond “Private” or “Not disclosed” so that will go into their database. On purpose I would state something anodyne or general such as ‘various’ or ‘travel’. If they want any more I would dump them. It’s not as though.they are lending you money.

    • DANi says:

      I had the same…but exactly after 5k x 6 months…

      I’m gonna close.

  • George K says:

Morning – anyone has any experience with having two different AmEx offers for the same shop on the same card?

To be precise, I’ve had a spend £100 get £30 back at a certain store for a couple of weeks, and now I see there’s a spend £100 get £20 back also available (which, I’ve just saved). Both offers have the same expiry date.

    Would I be getting £50 back if I put £100 through?…

    • paulm says:

Has worked for me before with 2 different Cafe Nero offers

    • Harry T says:

They will probably both trigger, yes. I had a similar situation recently and I got emails for triggering both offers.

    • Lady London says:

Worked for some in HN for each of past two years mk

    OT:
Anyone stayed at the Intercon in Prague?

I’m visiting Prague for my friend’s stag do in mid January. Was thinking of staying at the IC Prague because it’s about £100 a night in the Cyber Sale for a basic room, with breakfast included. I am IC Ambassador and IHG Platinum.

If the 4x IHG promotion works as planned, three nights in the IC Prague Will apparently net me 46,000 IHG base points (4x normal base).

My other option is the Augustine with Marriott – I’ll get £50 off, bringing it to about £250 for three nights. I’m only Marriott Gold though and I don’t think the rate includes breakfast.

Still very new to hotel schemes (just signed up for Ambassador) so looking for advice about whether it’s better to stay somewhere to maximise points or use an Amex offer to save about £50.

    • Lady London says:

Lisbon and Amsterdam ICs highly recommended on here. I wasn’t impressed with Prague. It felt more like an old Holiday Inn and housekeeping not run well.

      • Harry T says:

Thanks! Staying at the Amstel in Amsterdam in the same month.

Should say I don’t anticipate spending a lot of time at the IC Prague but was more interested in collecting a lot of points with the 4x promotion. I imagine I’ll be out most of the time. I suppose I’ve answered my own question.

I think if I was going with my other half, I’d opt for the Marriott as it looks much more elegant.

      • Dan says:

I had a terrible time in IC Lisbon. There were works going on – website said 10:00-18:00 daily, one floor at a time with buffer floors so disruption should be minimal. Works going on everywhere from before 9 am to gone 7pm. Couldn’t think let alone sleep! Spire Ambassador and room not ready until 4pm. IC Estoril on the other hand was wonderful!

        • Lady London says:

I hope you demanded a chunky part of your room rate back and bar credit etc.

    • Genghis says:

For a stag do aren’t you all meant to stay in a rubbish hostel / AirBnB? That’s our approach anyway. Splitting up would just kill the atmosphere.

      • Harry T says:

Possibly, @Genghis! My first stag abroad.

The rest of the guys are coming from a different part of the UK and will be arriving earlier and leaving later than me. So might end up being logistically challenging for me to stay with them for the first night, and I’ll be by myself on the last night as they are flying out in the evening and my flight is the following morning.

      • Michael says:

+1. I’ve stayed in some truly horrendous accommodation on stag dos. Couldn’t imagine saying “I’ll sort out my own hotel, see you at the chicken dippers.”

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

Genghis is right. Get in that hostel, accept it, and use alcohol to numb the pain…

  • fivebobbill says:

Totally O/T, Singapore – LHR flights
I have 2 Club World Avios seats booked on BA12 Singapore to London Heathrow, departing Singapore 23.15 on Tues 21st January, arriving Heathrow 05.15 on Weds 22nd – the 2 seats are one way only.
Due to a change of plans I will be cancelling them this week.
I know that Avios seats on this leg can be like hens teeth, especially at short notice, so just a heads up to anyone who may be on the lookout for a couple of Avios seats on the A380 back to UK around then.
As I say, will be cancelling sometime this week, whether they go back into the system and become available again is anyone’s guess.
If anybody is interested drop me a reply here and I’ll do my best to co-ordinate my cancellation.

  • Andy C says:

O/T Club World seat selection – this weekend I was able to reserve seats in Row 1 (Club Suite) on a NRT-LHR flight several months out without having any BA status – does anyone know if this is likely a system error or a change in BA strategy? In addition, the CW seat reservation cost on the outbound leg (to Seoul, B787) dropped from c.£80 to c.£35 when I checked over the weekend, has anyone experienced something similar?
