Six Senses announces a five star hotel in Whiteleys

We very rarely write about new hotels which are just announced, as opposed to just about to open.  Experience shows that a large percentage never happen, or open years late, or open with a different operator to the planned one.

This one is so weird that I couldn’t resist however.  Six Senses, the uber-luxury chain recently acquired by IHG, is to open a hotel in the old Whiteleys department store in Bayswater in 2023.  It will have 110 rooms and there will be an additional 14 Six Senses-managed apartments for sale.

If you don’t know Bayswater then you won’t fully undertand how odd this is.  Whilst, on paper, it looks close to very wealthy parts of London and only seconds from Hyde Park, Queensway – the road where Whiteleys sits – is, to put it mildly, not exactly upmarket.  Six Senses London guests will not be short of places to buy fried chicken, place a bet, visit a £1 emporium or launder their clothes.

That said …. the developer is someone I used to work with, Alex Michelin of Finchatton, who is responsible for the Four Seasons Private Residences currently approaching completion in Grosvenor Square.  His judgement is usually sound, so perhaps we are about to see major change in Bayswater.

The hotel will, when open, be bookable on IHG Rewards Club points and should be the most luxurious IHG property in London.

    1) Virgin Reward card voucher- No status, can you use voucher for RETURN upgrade to premium?
    2) Do you pay economy taxes or premium taxes if you upgrade?

    • Benilyn says:

      1) Yes, Economy to Premium only, not Premium to Upper.
      2) Premium taxes

    • ChrisA says:

      1. Yes, if just for one person. An alternative would be 2 pax one way.
      2. You pay the premium charges.

O/T Avis 250 extra Avios when paying with BA Amex

Does this appear on the Amex statement (as bonus points), or the BAEC statement (with the base rental points)?

    It’s on neither so far.

    • Shoestring says:

      for most people that’s a no, & a no

ie you’ll always have to chase and good luck with that

      • stevenhp1987 says:

        Never appeared for me.

Always have to chase. At least they have an online ticket system now.

They just apply the 700 again (which ends up being 702 normally) again and say I can keep the rest as a goodwill gesture. Happens every time!

        • Rich says:

Ha, yes, it did post as 702 (not sure why, I don’t think my previous rentals have). Who did you contact? Avis or Amex?

  • Darren says:

    O/T
Trying to refer from BAPP to Gold and getting a message that I’m not eligible to do this? s a glitch?

    • Shoestring says:

how exactly are you getting any message at all? you just generate your referral & give it (ie a web address) to the person you want to refer, they paste it into the web address bar or click on it / use it to go to Amex website & choose whichever card they want

I can’t see there’s any opportunity to get a message

      • Darren says:

Went to the referral page, then logged in and got the message, haven’t referred for a while. I’ll get the link as you say. Thanks

  • Charlieface says:

Rangali has the Overwater Villas available on Standard points, apparently

  • Martha says:

With HH points, which Hotel would you suggest for 5 nights in Febuary in Miami?

  • Shoestring says:

#fess-up (well it was more than fess and rhymes with luck)

so I messed up on my cheapo Oct half term booking this morning – 2x £40 HBO bookings out to our place in the sun, in the BA Sale – put in the wrong date & added on a week of hols…nice

thank ye pennypinching gods for BA’s go back in time/ cockup complete refund facility (24hrs limit though) – I was under the wrong impression it was for Avios flights only but obvs works fine for cash fares, so after minor heart attack, quickly got refunded and re-booked

    • Mark M says:

Good to know you ‘experts’ get it wrong at times too!
And even better to know BA are not totally pennypinching and you saved the day…

    • Peter K says:

      Well saved.

    • Rich says:

Todays’s cockup was finding a cheaper rate for a hotel in AUH next month, patting myself on the back for having made a refundable reservation, and cancelling so that I could avail of the cheaper rate. Almost immediately, realised that I’d punched the wrong month in. The new rate was £20 more, not £8 less. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

  • Doug M says:

    Good on them, sod égalité

    • Shoestring says:

let’s hope it stays at 60! not long till I get mine (it’s not much – worked there spanning 2 pension years – but I’d rather get it sooner than later haha)

  • Roy says:

O/T: Is a discount on bar spend for IHG Rewards Club members a standard IHG feature? Not one I was aware of but the hotel I’m staying at offers it – and now I’m wondering, is it something I should have claimed and didn’t on past IHG stays – or is it just a specific to this hotel….?

We got 15% off our bar bill at the HIX in Singapore in May 2018. We stayed there with my brother and his partner and they like a beer or two or three so our bar bill was very large and I earned several thousand qualifying pts! I was Spire Elite.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Recent offer in general across all hotels but not sure if it’s time limited.

Some hotels may have done their own in the past.
