British Airways sneaks out some interesting news on lounge refurbishments

British Airways put out a press release yesterday announcing its ’20 New Year resolutions’.

I was tempted to delete it unread, obviously.  That would have been a mistake, however, as for some reason BA chose to slip out two new announcements among the 20 resolutions.

Lounge improvements for 2020

The first bit of ‘new news’ was about lounges.  British Airways has been sprucing up many of its lounges in recent years, with the most recent re-openings being Geneva, which I reviewed here (photo below), and San Francisco.  In general, they are doing a good job.

Lounge ‘refreshments’ for 2020 will be:

  • Heathrow
  • Edinburgh
  • Berlin

….. along with a re-designed Elemis Spa at New York JFK.

I’m not entirely sure what BA means by ‘refreshed’.  It clearly is not going to ‘refresh’ the lounge in Berlin, since the airport is scheduled to close on 8th November 2020!  I assume it means that there will be a brand new British Airways lounge at Berlin Brandenberg.

Similarly, I am not sure what ‘refreshing’ means in the context of Heathrow.  There are rumours of a lounge finally opening in Terminal 5C.  There is also, I believe, space available in Terminal 5A for the expansion of the South lounge complex.  On the other hand, ‘refresh’ might simply mean buying a few new sofas as happened with the Concorde Room recently.

Edinburgh is in need of a redesign.  It is a surprisingly large lounge but is now looking dated, and No 1, the two Aspire lounges and the forthcoming Clubrooms have raised the bar.

Concorde Teams expanding to more routes

The second bit of news related to the ‘Concorde’ teams, which is the rebranded ‘Special Services’ operation.  These are the senior British Airways staff on the ground who are available to Gold Guest List and Premier card holders and have additional powers to get things done for you when necessary.

From 2020, ‘Concorde’ teams will be situated in New York JFK, London Heathrow, Delhi, Los Angeles and Mumbai.

And the other 18 resolutions …..

Here are the other 18 New Year resolutions from British Airways, most of which we have covered already (or declined to cover!):

  1. New destinations – the airline has already announced nine new routes for 2020 including the Kosovan and Montenegrin capitals Pristina and Podgorica, Perugia in Italy, Antalya, Dalaman and Bodrum in Turkey, San Sebastián in Spain, Rhodes in Greece and Portland, Oregon, and it’s promising even more new destinations for customers to come.
  1. New aircraft – the airline is due to take delivery of more than 20 new aircraft in 2020, including 787-10s and A350s which are up to 40% more fuel efficient than the aircraft they replace.
  1. Club Suite – more aircraft will be flying with the airline’s new business class seat, Club Suite, which offers privacy via a suite door, 40% more storage space and a 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access for all passengers.
  1. Caring for the environment – from January British Airways will be offsetting all its domestic flights, customers travelling further afield can offset their individual emissions. The airline will be making additional announcements about sustainability throughout the year.

  1. World Traveller comfort – in addition to enhancements made in 2019, customers travelling in the airline’s economy cabin will experience refreshed bedding.
  1. Designed by Savile Row tailoring expert Ozwald Boateng OBE, new uniforms for a new decade will be revealed.
  1. Food for thought – the airline is introducing new menus across its network thanks to new partnerships with gourmet caterers Do&Co at Heathrow and Newrest at Gatwick.
  1. Connectivity – the majority of eligible aircraft will be WiFi ready by the end of 2020.
  1. BA.com – expect a newly re-designed Manage My Booking experience enabling customers to navigate to information and services in a more intuitive way.
  1. Appy days – customers using the British Airways’ app will benefit from a slicker design and additional functionality improving the experience as they make and manage their bookings.
  1. Robots – British Airways is trialling new autonomous wayfaring robots at Heathrow to help customers navigate through the airport.
  1. 3D printing – the airline’s tech experts will continue their trial of printing non-essential aircraft parts like tray tables, to ensure flights are able to depart on time and without seats going out of service.
  1. Customer service training – thousands of British Airways’ airport hosts worldwide will receive additional training to provide a service that goes above and beyond expectations.
  1. Executive Club – the airline has committed to making continuous improvements to the Executive Club with new partners and exciting deals throughout the year

  • Trev says:

Well updating the atrocious iPad app would be good. I’m amazed that it is still useless with 97% 1 star ratings.

  • Andrew says:

I’m booked to fly on one of the renovated 777s fitted with Club Suite, but in First. Do we know if the seat will be the 787 one or just the same as the other 777s, but with fewer sears?

    • Robert says:

We do indeed know (they are already flying) and unfortunately seats are not the same as the 789s. Same First seat as before, albeit with some new fabrics I believe.

  • Ann Perkins says:

New resolutions would have been good if they’d have improved their absolutely dreadful Avios exec club customer services. Since February I’ve been trying to address a missold Singapore to Sydney journey. I’d previously booked the London to Singapore Business Avios flights with. Companion vouchers but when onward flights to Sydney became available I tried to book these on same companion ticket. Phoned and was told not possible and had to pay 110 000 Avios plus £1600 tax. Next day read your online topic about this and it took 3 months to get the cash refunded. In September I rebooked dates to lower non peak and have been awaiting 17500 promised Avios . I’ve called and written to exec club and customer services. Neither take responsibility and alas in November my house of Avios account has been totally cleared out to zero. I should have at least 100,000 Avios . Exec club say it was an agent error but nobody is responding. Rubbish service from BA .

  • Nick says:

What is the point of BA talking about things they can do to improve when they assume they have the very basics right in the first place?

Recent CE flight of 6 rows….one drink offered from the bar/hot/cold take it or leave it were about to land…this was from LHR to FRA…..I’m sorry but I have no plans to fly BA in 2020. It’s not rocket science when your staff are fed up of your garbage marketing gimmicks and trying their best it’s no wonder they come across arsey most of the time….I feel for them

The seat charges on biz on both long and short haul now if you don’t hold status are beyond a joke…

  • LewisB says:

Can they resolve the IT issuing around BA shopping portal? It’s an absolute chore to chase all the transactions that fail to post in pending.

    • KBuffett says:

I use with a a lot, and I’ve only had to chase once and that’s because Dell refuse to pay these types of things across all channels unless chased.
Perhaps it’s something to do with the device or browser settings?

    • Andrew says:

Try a different Browser and internet security settings.

Also, be careful at work if your organisation uses a single presentation IP address. Your transaction can be mis-allocated to someone else on some tracking systems. Likewise their transactions can be mis-allocated to you – there’s a grand sitting on one of the fundreturn accounts that I use for an OTA transaction I definitely didn’t make. I did click through and search on that day though.

      • LewisB says:

Generally always use the mobile app. Stuff like Just Eat, Trainline, Thristle Hotels and Wayfair all track fine. But then Next and Viator UK never go to pending. Always registered as tracked and I’ve never been denied but the process is just frustrating to claim.

  • Frankie says:

OT but no BITs today. Has anyone received their extra one avios per £4 spend on the BA amex card? I am showing no bonus avios on my account – just the 1.5 avios per pound spent. I know the deal ended on 27th Dec but does anyone know when it started, so I have this information for when I contact amex about the missing bonus avios?

    • Anna says:

No, and still no bonus Avios from the Laithwaite’s offer on our BAPP & blue.

      • RussellH says:

I have had 14 of the bonus avios credited, but likewise nothing from Laithwaites. These I was promised before Christmas – the chat agent said he could see them waiting…

        • RussellH says:

Just got another 4 bonus avios earlier today, while on the road to our New Year points stay.

    • NvT1115 says:

I have been advised by AMEX in Brighton that the bonus avios will appear when they next sweep your points across to BAEC. They stopped showing purchase by purchase updates.

    • Retron says:

I’ve received some of the points, but it’s sporadic. Bear in mind there are umpteen exceptions, too, such that things like PayPal won’t count (there was a condition saying the bonus wouldn’t be awarded on transactions processed by a third party payment processor).

The first such bonus points posted on the 4th December for me, with 5 lots of bonus points posting yesterday (and a few in between, but not as many as I’d have expected).

      • Andrew says:

I don’t seem to have my get 1000 bonus Avios on £100 BA spend either.

        • Rob says:

Got mine. It is easy to miss as they add it to your standard monthly pile of Avios.

        • Dev says:

Haven’t had the 1 extra Avios per £4 spend or the 1000 extra Avios for £100 spend with BA. The number of Avios transferred by Amex to my BAEC account is the exact equivalent of 1.5 Avios / £1 for non BA spend and 3 Avios per £1 for BA spend. Planning to contact Amex CS next week.

  • Doogie says:

Los Angeles so good they listed it twice! @Rob

  • Alan says:

I’m a bit surprised re the Edinburgh lounge refresh – I still find it pretty good decor/furniture-wise (better than LHR Galleries anyway!), the main shortcoming is the lack of hot food (apart from soup) – that’s what the other EDI lounges beat it with. However I can’t see that changing with a refresh as it seems to be their ‘brand standard’ for outstation lounges. Would be great if it did change!
