How to use Avios points for free nights at Iberostar hotels and resorts

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It’s a little known fact that you can redeem Avios with Iberostar, a Spanish hotel chain that runs a lot of 4 and 5 star summer holiday properties.  Iberostar owns hotels in Mallorca, Tenerife, the Dominican Republic and various other places.

The Iberostar website is here if you want to check out their portfolio.

EDIT: Since this article was published, Iberostar has withdrawn as an Avios partner.  Sorry.

Full details of how you can redeem are on the Iberia website here.

Redemption prices start at 12,500 Avios per night.

To book, you need to call Iberostar on the number provided.  Whilst this is a Spanish number, feedback from readers in the past is that the call centre can handle English perfectly well and is efficient in booking Avios redemptions.

Note the small print:

The tariffs indicated apply to a standard double room for 2 persons. Please ask about children.

Extras and supplements for 3 persons not available.

Type of board subject to availability at the hotel. Hotels in America, Cape Verde, Greece, Morocco and Tunisia mostly offer full-board.

Avios can only be used for stays. Avios cannot be redeemed on other products the establishment might offer.

Cancellations up to 48h before the arrival date do not carry any Avios penalty.

Subsequent cancellations, no-shows and unexpected departures will be penalized at 100% of the Avios.

The cancellation policy looks particularly attractive, given that you can walk away from your booking up to two days before arrival.

Here is an example of pricing.  I priced up the Grand Hotel Portals Nous in Mallorca for two adults from 18th July for seven nights.  Bed and Breakfast costs €3,141 (£2,707) pre-paid or €3,490 (£3,008) if you want flexibility.

For Avios it would cost 35,000 Avios x 7 nights which is 245,000 Avios.  At 1.22p per Avios, based on the flexible price, this is quite a good deal.

Half Board might be even better value, if you were happy to eat in the resort, since you are only using an additional 5,000 Avios per day.

What is not clear is if there are availability restrictions or not, although the (few) reader reports I’ve had in the past have gone through without trouble.

Your Avios need to be sitting in Iberia Plus to book this.  This article explains how to move your Avios from British Airways Executive Club to Iberia Plus.

The Iberostar website is here if you want to learn more about what they have to offer.   Note that you can also earn Avios via Iberia Plus when you stay at Iberostar hotels (150 Avios per night) even as part of a package holiday.

  • TripRep says:

Happy New Year HFP’ers and team.

Good timing, is this in response to a reader’s comment/query the other day re: Tenerife?

  • Graham Walsh says:

Happy new year all. OT question, anyone got recommendations for Grand Cayman in October? Quick bit of research seems along the 7 mile beach side.

    TIA

    • Will says:

Not sure on October prices but I’m contemplating going at end of feb and kimptoj seafire on IHG points is what I’m considering.
Cash is £1k a night (do people pay that?) or 70k IHG points (effectively 63k if your an ambassador)

      • Genghis says:

“effectively 63k if your (sic) an ambassador“ in your second+ year and selected the 10% rebate option.

        • Will says:

Thanks for correction, didn’t realise it was conditional on renewal.

      • Pid says:

+ the $75 resort fees per day at the Kimpton.

    • Pid says:

Thinking about going myself in Oct. Which carrier and route are you looking at?

  • KBuffett says:

    Happy New Year everyone.
Thank you to Rob & the team for a great site.
And to all the great people who comment.
I’ve said before, but I genuinely think Rob should implement a forum feature. I think it would fit in with what I perceive to be his strategy. Drop me a line Rob if you have any questions as to why I think it’s a great idea.

    • Rob says:

It is likely to come, in some form, with the site redesign we are currently planning.

We had a Q&A forum ready to go but we couldn’t get happy with how it looked given our current narrow page width.

  • Will says:

Iberostar has a huge presence in Cuba, have not had chance to see if there is value there but worth a look if your sat on a big stash of avios.

  • Go says:

Unfortunately This deal no longer exists. I tried to book it at the start of the week and was advised the commercial arrangement between Iberia and Iberostar ended a few days ago. I rang twice and got two different agents who both gave the same message

    • Rob says:

      Oh ….

    • TGLoyalty says:

Could be worth trying in a few days

Find these things can be said around New Years as one deal is ending its old contract and the renewal isn’t fully sealed

Or try twitter as find they have more chance of finding out the deal.

    • AJA says:

Oh that’s a shame. I stayed at the Iberostar Grand El Mirador in Tenerife last year and am planning to go back this Sept. I didn’t realise there was a tie up between Iberia and Iberostar so missed out on 1500 Avios (stayed for 10 nights). Lovely hotel (adults only) right on the beach at Costa Adeje. They gave a family hotel next door too.

      Happy New Year to all.

    • jonathan stone says:

I’ve just called and got the same answer ‘not working with Avios anyore’… which is a pity…

  • PaulC says:

O/T – I have a Lloyds upgrade voucher expiring at the end of January. I want to know my entire options. As I understand it we will have to use it this year or into early 2021 when dates are released. Is there any tricks we can book something now and then change it to be used further into 2021 as we already have two big holidays booked for this year.

  • Sandra says:

O/T and Happy 2020 to everyone. A question for those who are much more knowledgeable than I am. My daughter and I are booked on Edinburgh to Palma seasonal flight in September and when I checked to try to book my sister-in-law, BA site says it does not operate a flight on this day! Manchester booked for my son and family and the new Glasgow seasonal one still showing. Don’t think there is much point in calling today but thought someone on here might have know something any ideas? .

    • AJA says:

Happy New year to you Sandra. I just checked and it seems the direct flight BA2347 EDI to PMI is on Saturdays in Sept, departing 07:20 arr 11:30. Every other day is indirect via LHR.
What dates and flight number in Sept are you flying?

      • Sandra Brown says:

Wondering if there is a glitch in the system. Travelling on 12th-19th. I checked last night and again this morning as did my son independently. I’ll check again. Just said not operating on that day and gave option of Sunday via LHR. My booking on that direct flight is still on my account. Was puzzled and although I live in Glasgow the Edinburgh times are much better. Thanks so much.

        • MarkZ says:

I think that the messages displayed are a bit misleading. In my experience, that message indicates that the flight is fully booked. However, some availability was showing a few minutes ago, so maybe just keep trying!

          • Stu N says:

There’s loads of availability outbound on 12/9 and returning on 19/9 according to Expertflyer. Must be a glitch with BA.com.

            BA (CJ) 2347 EDI 7:20a → PMI 11:30a
            J9 C9 D9 R9 I0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V1 N0 O0 Q0 S0 G0

The letters are fare classes (JCDRI are Club Europe in order of flexibility and cost – J is full fare fully flexible. Y through to S are Euro Traveller roughly in order and G is Group fares) – so cheapest fares don’t exist but loads of availability. A 9 means “at least 9”. The return is about the same.

          • Sandra says:

Thank you. Seems odd that all economy and business is booked out. Thanks for you advice. Will do a check again tomorrow.

          • Sandra says:

Thank you so much. BA glitch I think. X

          • Stu N says:

Availability is definitely there – if you can’t get it to work on BA.com, try pricing up on Google Flights and booking using multi city tool on BA. Failing that, phone BA, explain it doesn’t work online and they should waive any telephone fee.

    • Sam G says:

There has been some glitches with BA.com it seems, lots of weirdness like no flights to Chicago or Boston according to flyertalk, so I wouldn’t worry !

  • Sandra says:

Again thanks everyone. Sister -in-law a nervous traveller and wants to be in business beside the two of us. Happier now that it seems operational and hoping not to be bumped like last year which was horrendous when they sent the smaller aircraft and CS completely incompetent. Happy 2020. Xx
