Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Is the Tandem Money cashback credit card worth £5.99 per month?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

For a long time, our recommended credit card for overseas use was from challenger bank Tandem Money.

It was a great product.  There was no annual fee, you paid nothing in foreign exchange fees and you got 0.5% cashback on all of your spending – even your foreign spend.

This was clearly a loss leader for Tandem which couldn’t continue.  The card was withdrawn for new applications late last year.  Existing cardholders received an email yesterday explaining that they are losing it too unless they pay a fee.

What should replace your Tandem Money card?

From March, cardholders have two options – they can either pay a £5.99 monthly fee to retain their card, or the card will be cancelled.

For most people, it will be ‘bye bye’ to Tandem Money.

If you have a bit of cash sitting around, there MAY be something for you.

The £5.99 fee also allows you to open a Tandem Money savings account with a ‘top of the market’ interest rate of 1.5%.  You can invest up to £250,000 although I doubt you would want to risk more than the £85,000 that is Government-protected in case of default.

If you DO have £85,000 in cash, there is an interesting angle here:

Invested in Tandem Money at 1.5%, you would receive £1,275 gross in interest

The best alternative deal at the moment is probably Marcus at 1.35% (£1,147 of interest)

You would be paying a £72 annual fee for your Tandem Money account BUT you would be receiving £128 more of gross interest.  Knock off tax at your marginal rate and you should be roughly quits, which means that the credit card benefits are all upside.

There is one more quirk as well.  From March, the interest rate on the Tandem credit card will be 0%.  Forever.  Tandem is basically offering you a 0% loan as long as you pay your £5.99 monthly fee.

Heading to Tirana next month on a TPR. Looks like the Plaza has been open a few years – Is the recent opening with Maritim a rebranding?

Any advice for a good restaurant nearby?

    • E says:

Don’t know about restaurants but yes, the Maritim is a rebranding of the existing Plaza hotel.

  • AlexT says:

OT: I have a question about the Virgin Atlantic cards. Been using the premium card for over a year now, and over the past month the FX loading fee on EEA transactions (EUR and other European currencies) has been removed. I checked the rate at which anecdotal transactions have been booked and it matches the MasterCard daily rate sans bank fee.

I saw in a comment the other day that Rob expected FX loading to be reinstated on the basic card under a different name to comply with the European regulation that removed it in the first place (the removal was noted on the December statement for the premium card).

Do you know if the FX loading fees will be reinstated on the premium card as well? Or is the plan to only reinstate them on the basic one to cover the lack of annual fee?

    • jc says:

If it is you’ll get at least a month’s notice. For the time being, free free free.

      • Nick_C says:

I’m still waiting for notice that they are capping miles at my credit limit!

        • Rob mc says:

Same here, statement received 3 days ago and got 6 X my balance in points so don’t appear to be affected and nothing on the statement to show the cap.

        • Harry T says:

I haven’t received notice either and I believe they must inform me before changing terms.

    • Rob says:

The Virgin card team is coming to our dinner on Monday so I will ask.

OT Searching for a flight last night on Executive club KIX-HKG and loads of availability come up on screen with Cathay Pacific on dates throughout March had another check this morning and nothing on all dates that im searching?
Is this the website playing up or could all 30 odd tickets be gone in 10 hours?
    Very strange

    • Charlieface says:

Check aa.com you don’t need to login

    • Lady London says:

Apparently BA has form for not displaying CX award seats that exist, or only display them a week ahead etc. I suspect if you can follow @charlieface’s advice and find the saver-level award seats on AA or maybe even QF? you might be able to phone BA and book. Sometimes BA agents can’t see saver award seats that you can though. In which case HUACA.

@charlieface are you at the party? I am impressed and grateful for your tips on car hire. Would be great to meet you IRL.

      • Charlieface says:

No I’m Manchester based and tbh I’m not the typical ABC1 middle management you seem to get on HFP, I’m much younger and more a MoneySavingExpert type except with more brains.

        • Lady London says:

yes that is why I was hoping you might be there. Don’t sell yourself short. You sound like a number if people I met in the City that did very well on brains and nothing else. “Blue bloods and barrow boys” was a tradition.

We really have to not lose opportunities to gather people, say in MAN or EDI catchment area…

  • Jovanna says:

OT: Went to pay the balance of my Creation card at the weekend, using their new app. It was £2750. I received an error message and an error message and a third error message each time I tried to make a payment – ‘Payment not made at this time. Please contact your bank.’

Checked my current account and 3 x £2750 had left the account. I’ve made some other payments via the Creation card, which will fall in the next billing period, so these payments will go towards that but slightly annoying.

    • Hmm says:

You just wanted to tell people how much you have in your current account, didn’t you? Nobody cares.

      • Michael C says:

I don’t think that counts as bragging at all?
In any case, they’re probably just pending transactions and they’ll disappear in a couple of days if the money doesn’t get added to the Creation account

    • callum says:

Have they ACTUALLY left your account or are they just pending?

    • Phil says:

      Creation has an app?!

    • The Urbanite says:

Creation being a bit slow processing payments this week – taking longer than one working day which tends to be the norm.

    • Sarah says:

This happened to me last night too using the new app. The payment is pending so will wait and see what happens.

    • the_real_a says:

Sounds like all three were authorised but not taken by Creation. its wouldn’t surprise me if all of those payments fell off… Do you have any creation confirmation mails?

      • Jovanna says:

Money has left my current account and is showing as paid in my Creation account. I have a positive balance of a few hundred quid in my Creation account now.

        • Tom H says:

          This happened to me!

To be clear, I paid using the app (first tim using app to pay), app said declined or error something, no email confirmation from creation, shown as pending in my bank account so assumed it would be returned. Bank said it may take 7 days to show as credit even if declined. So as payment was due 13/1/20, I decided to pay via a different method on the web site, this time went through and email recieved. Day later original payment goes through and is credited. Now Creation is in 2k credit!

So be ware paying through the app!

          • Jovanna says:

Yes, first time using the new app for me. Old ‘app’ was a bit clunky but no issues. No emails BTW.

    • Andrew M says:

The same thing happened to me. I made two attempts to pay through the app, neither of which appeared to go through. Checked my IHG card balance a couple of days later and it’s several thousand pounds in credit.

  • Michael C says:

OT: I booked a BA holiday to Las Vegas that was supposed to give us $10pppn room credit. The hotel said it was never added to our booking and our problem was with BA. I reported it to the BA holidays cust service email. What would the usual compensation be? It obviously wasn’t a deal breaker but technically we’re out $140 in credits we were supposed to have.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      $140

      • Michael C says:

Sorry, I meant would they give cash (what currency?) or voucher or avios (how would they calculate it or would it be a ‘good will gesture’ token amount for things like this)

        • Roberto says:

I would ask for 20000 avios or a £200 evoucher off a future booking. See what they come back with.

  • jamie says:

Tandem = dead in the water

Pity because it was a great card

    • Andrew says:

      But terrible customer service.

“We’d like you to reach out to us on Facebook Messenger” (when I’d expressed a complaint).

Thankfully, I’ve just had my updated terms and conditions for my MBNA card (former BMI), and quickly flicking through it I’m still getting the 0.5p per £1. Sadly not on the version with free FX.

      • Andrew says:

In my experience the customer service has been excellent. Contacted them a few days ago through the chat function in the app because a mystery transaction had just appeared. It was answered within a minute or so. I was asked to call because they can’t deal with fraud enquiries via chat. The phone call was answered by a person immediately who froze the transaction and is getting a new card sent out.

  • aston100 says:

Is there already an (updated) article that covers the steps involved with booking a multi-city / open jaw 2-4-1 with F on one leg and J on the other? (presumably starting off with J on both legs).
To include how to join the separate bookings (I understand this has changed recently) and where necessary upgrading/replacing one J leg with an F leg if it becomes available later?

    Thanks.

    • SimonW says:

      Call BA

      • Anna says:

Current wisdom seems to be that BA will refund any extra Avios from making single bookings but not any difference in fees, which proves expensive if you destination is the US!

      • aston100 says:

Sorry, are you implying that BA will explain this process on the phone?
On the few occasions I have been forced to phone them for any queries & issues, the telephone agents were useless.
I’m looking for an article or guide somewhere that breaks it all down, and includes all known scenarios where possible. I presumed there was an upto date one on this site but am unable to locate.

        • Anna says:

It’s quite straight forward. If both your legs are available, call BA and they will do the whole thing on the phone (though you may need to be very specific about what you want, as you say some of them aren’t the best). No joining of PNRs required.
If, on the other hand, you want to book the outbound leg before the return leg is released, you will either have to call BA to do the whole return booking (there IS a recent HFP article about this), or book the return leg on line then call BA to get the surplus Avios back. There’s no guarantee they will link the two bookings but that shouldn’t cause any issues, you’ll just have 2 booking references for your trip.

      • Lady London says:

If the website can’t be used to book something, and IIRC mixed class on s reward return is an example, then BA waives phone booking fee. Ask them to if they go to charge it.

      • aston100 says:

        I called BA.
He told me “I ain’t gettin’ on no plane, fool”

        I’ll get my coat…
