Get a good Australia and New Zealand business class flight deal on Singapore Airlines

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

To be frank, the best flight deals in Europe at the moment are out of Scandinavia.  I’m not sure who started it – potentially Qatar Airways – but other airlines have been forced to join in.

Here, for example, is Oslo to Cape Town on British Airways in Club World in May.  The fare is the equivalent of £1,250 return:

BA Oslo Cape Town deal

If you look at IDENTICAL flights for just Heathrow to Cape Town, on the same dates, you will pay £701 in Economy ….

Anyway, back to Australia and New Zealand.  Whilst there are plenty of Australia deals out of Scandinavia, Singapore Airlines has an excellent reputation for food and service.  If you book by tomorrow night (23rd) there are some attractive fares available.  In May, for example, I found last night:

Stockholm to Sydney – SEK 23,372 return (£1,881)

Stockholm to Auckland – SEK 23,145 return (£1,863)

Stockholm to Perth – SEK 21,873 return (£1,760)

Stockholm to Brisbane – SEK 23,336 return (£1,877)

Stockholm to Canberra – SEK 22,396 return (£1,802)

Stockholm to Melbourne – SEK 23,201 return (£1,867)

Stockholm to Christchurch – SEK 23,122 return (£1,860)

There is a ‘7 day’ option for search results so you can easily find days with the best fares.

If you don’t have a credit card with 0% foreign exchange fees, your best option for paying is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers triple points – 3 per £1 – when you book flight tickets in a foreign currency.  This is because the transaction triggers the ‘double points for airline spend’ and the ‘double points for foreign spend’ bonuses.  Our review of Amex Gold is here.

Singapore Airlines is in Star Alliance so you can’t earn Avios or BA tier points.  You can credit the flights to Singapore’s KrisFlyer scheme (learn more about KrisFlyer here) and top them up with American Express Membership Rewards points at 1:1, or to any other Star Alliance scheme such as Lufthansa Miles & More.

You can also credit Singapore Airlines flights to Virgin Flying Club – details are on the Virgin Atlantic site here.

You can book on the Singapore Airlines website here.

    IHG competition marked as closed.

    • Kenneth says:

Yes, I found that to be the case too. I may re-open later today. Worth checking.

  • Chris K says:

You can also credit the tier points and miles to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. As a Gold member my recent Singapore Airlines one-way direct flight from London to Sydney in Business gave me 175 tier points and 8,428 miles.

“The Promotion begins on 10/01/2020 at 00:01 Greenwich Mean Time (“GMT”) (“Opening Date”) and ends on 22/01/2020 at 23:58 GMT (“Closing Date”), the time between the Opening Date and Closing Date being the “Promotional Period”.”

But indeed, it shows as closed 🙁

SQ has been running the Sydney flight promo for a while – before Christmas!

  • tony says:

Worth noting that the SQ flight from Stockholm runs via Moscow, so starting in the UK you’re potentially adding two extra sectors in each direction to this journey. Am sure it’s still a great product and the pricing is very keen, but it’s going to add 24hrs to an already long journey.

  • MattB says:

Just noticed the pod cost from the T5 thistle has increased by 20% – yes a whole pound!

    • Michael C says:

Tried to justify a night there for the fam and I (though hotel reviews look dodgy?) just to use the parking for a few days, but was still awful value.
It’s back to our regular T5 JustPark guy for us.

      • Jane says:

we stayed a couple of years ago, it’s not terrible, dated but clean and the food although basic was OK (fish and chips / burger). The family room was actually two rooms across a corner with a lobby joining them which was ideal for us and we got a good deal – but the kids (then 2 and 4) watching the planes go practically overhead from the rooftop outdoor restaurant was priceless !

      • MattB says:

It’s not the best hotel clearly but if your literally going to be there for 10 hrs before an early flight there still is value. Last year we booked 15 days parking and hotel with pod for £120 after amex offer discount. This Easter we have same for a bit more using holiday extras. I never eat at hotels so can’t comment on catering.

And to be honest my wife loves the pods so that swings it.

        • LewisB says:

I’m staying in the Thistle tomorrow for an early T5 departure on Friday. Yes it’s not the best but with a recent amex offer for £71 I managed to get the delux king, prepaid 2x 3 course meals and breakfast. That is value.

      • Nate1309 says:

The hotel is pretty awful. Very tired and the room I stayed it smelt weird. But they did me a good deal over the phone on 26 days parking. And I do love the POD.

        • Chrisasaurus says:

It has a dated, worn dark carpet, (indeed its am aesthetic disaster) and no lift and it’s a very odd layout.

But oddly it ticks every box for me.

          Close to T5.
          POD access
          Reasonably priced
          Good food for midrange hotel
Rooftop bar area to watch planes taking off

I dont use any other metrics and the Thistle scores full marks on all of these. It’s a no brainer for me – only the Sofitel can best it because it’s just better as a place to spend time but it has no rooftop bar with wow factor so honestly I’m happier in the Thistle

Were you at the party @chrisasaurus? If so I’m sorry to have missed you. interesting comment about why quite a few HfP’ers stay at the Thistle T5

    • mark2 says:

You can upgrade to a refurbished room through Holiday Extras for about £14.

  • Qwertyknowsbest says:

Could I sense check my thinking re BA tier points. As a connecting flight MAN – LHR – AGP in business earns 80 TP’s?

    Thanks

    • AJA says:

      Yes thats correct.

    • Anna says:

If your dates fit I think the direct flight from MAN-AGP also earns 80 tier points without the faff of going through LHR!

      • QwertKnowsBest says:

Thanks AJA & Anna. I have actually and separately booked the MAN – AGP direct but in economy. May make sense to upgrade then.

  • Matthew says:

BA related – still struggling to book 7th Jan 2021 onwards despite being T-355 and less. Expecting it to be off-peak too but looks like some IT issues. Anyone else still having problems….

    • Craig says:

It’s been like this for a few days, mentioned in the IT glitches on FT.

    • Michael C says:

Matthew, I coulnd’t pull up a multi-city route/price for days on Safari, but no probs with Chrome.

    • Dawn says:

I’m also having the same issues for the beginning of January 2021 and have been trying each day. They are showing all the flights when you can find a flight as Peak time. I want to use my 2-4-1

      • Lady London says:

Maybe see if baredemptionfinder is showing any more accurate results and phone BA to book? BA should agree to waive the phone-in fee if you’re not able to do it online.
