Get £80 cashback on Qatar Airways flights with American Express

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The latest travel company to offer a cashback offer on American Express cards is Qatar Airways. The offer is £80 back on £800+ spend.

We have had numerous comments from people who have this offer so it seems to be fairly widespread.  You need to look on the ‘offers’ tab on the online statement page for every Amex card you have.

The offer is open to the first 8,000 people who ‘save’ the offer to their card. You must book by 27th March 2020 which gives you plenty of time to wait for a good promotion to come around.

The key restriction is that it is only valid on flights departing from the UK (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Cardiff).  It is NOT valid on ex-EU bookings.

Don’t forget there are also strong Amex cashback offers running for Malaysia Airlines (details here) and Hilton (details here).

You need to book directly via the Qatar Airways website to trigger the cashback.

PS.  If you missed it, take a look at our recent article on the top 10 reasons why you should get the American Express Platinum card.

OT – I’m waiting for the 10,000 bonus MRs on Amex Gold to hit my account. Any idea how long they should take after my renewal date to appear?

  • BSI1978 says:

OT re the ‘spend £300 & receive 3k Avios’ offer. Has anyone done this & received the usual generated email confirmation?

Done this some time ago & still await the 3k points, & I recall not receiving said email despite spending £400+ on flights.

    • idrive says:

I havent’ been receiving that kind of emails lately at all

      • roberto says:

I spent the required minimum and got the 3000 MR 5 days later, I did get the email confirming I had triggered the bonus but that arrived after the points where in my account.

EDIT:- Spent £300 on the 20th of Jan – Points hit on the 25th

      • Matt says:

Booked a hotel via BA, had an email almost a week after the transaction saying ive used the offer and got the points a day or so later. Wife had similar experience too.

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

The email came in about a week later

  • Andrew says:

    @Shoestring.

A rather poor 5% at Morrissons on every shop (until 10/3) with a maximum return of £10 has turned up on LBG this morning.

I won’t be activating it. Will hold off until there’s a 10% on Spar or Coop for the Council Tax and Octopus bill.

    • SultanOfCroydon says:

Thank you very much for posting this. The LBG cash back offerings have disappointed this year.

    • William Squires says:

10% back on Perks at Work though (Next Jump) for those lucky enough to have it. Time to stock up on Amazon vouchers….

      • Andrew says:

        Excellent!

That’s only just reappeared today, it had disappeared from the InStore Offers at the beginning of the month. 10% over £20. 1% under £20. Valid until 12th Feb. Waitrose offer is similar but 5%.

        • EwanG says:

Don’t forget Morrisons 8 miles/£ (spend >£20) and Waitrose 4 miles/£ (spend >£35) on Virgin portal, stacks with those previously mentioned.

          • Andrew says:

Airtime Rewards has launched 10% Instore at Morrisson’s today too…

I suspect that there might be scheme clash. Otherwise that’s potentially 25% back and Virgin Miles.

        • Shoestring says:

my wife & my son have both got 15% @Ms! max £10 though

          • Anup says:

Can you get both Airtime and Virgin Portal at same time of card registered on both? Have been trying for last few days but nothing popped up on Airtime yet

          • The Jetset Boyz says:

@Anup we did a shop at Waitrose & Caffè Nero (both are on Airtime Rewards & Virgin Flying Club) – in both instances the points didn’t track on Airtime Rewards or Flying Club.

    • BJ says:

15% for me but still a maximum £10. I’ll take it for gas.

      • EwanG says:

I’ve still got a few M paper vouchers remaining from last year, obtained just before they introduced the plastic M GCs. Does anyone have any experience of using the plastic GCs for fuel?
I’m aware they no longer refund the change!

        • Shoestring says:

yep it would make sense to buy a £66.67 Morrisons pre paid card & use it for fuel if you have got the 15% off offer (assuming it lets you put any old amount on the card, not that I’ve bought one yet)

  • Craig says:

Still here and still healthy spending my points at the IC Da Nang, sufficed to say Mrs S is very happy.

    • BJ says:

Are you coming back via HKG Craig? If so then keep an eye on it as USA airlines are suspending flights.

      • Craig says:

Thanks for the info. Via Singapore, but I’ve had to spend two nights extra in Vietnam so as to have 14 days clear of China.

  • Ant says:

OT: As mentioned before we have a holiday booked with flights to HK and then onwards to Philippines. At the moment the HK to Philippines flights are cancelled up to 29 Feb.
I have asked Bupa Travel if they will cover the costs of hotels and any other prepaid bookings in this situation (assuming it continues for when we are due to go) and they said:
“they do not provide cover for any claims caused by ‘the withdrawal of services on the recommendation of regulatory authority of that country this includes any issues directly relating to the Coronavirus outbreak.”
Is this standard? I assumed we would be covered.

    • Charlieface says:

You’d have to check the terms of insurance. On their home page they have the following statement:
Our policies do provide cover for cancellation and curtailment where FCO advice has changed after you purchased your policy or booked your trip, whichever is the later.

I’ll point out if the flight is cancelled the airline must cover it under EC261. Exceptional circumstances are irrelevant for duty of care.

    • Andrew says:

Are CX offering you flights on another carrier via a different hub?

  • MK says:

I have a Platinum Amex and understand I can apply for a free gold card to be issued to my partner etc. Can I apply for one to be issued directly for me? It would be useful considering the airline spend, FX spend etc.

    • Lumma says:

You can apply for a supplementary card in your own name with all AMEX cards. Just put your details in and select “other” as the relationship. You can then add the extra card to your online account and see the transactions separately

      • jc says:

A supplementary gold on a Platinum account doesn’t receive gold benefits like extra points for airline spend.

    • meta says:

Somebody can confirm, but I don’t think that supplementary Gold card linked to Platinum attracts double points on airline and FX spend.

      • Waddle says:

The supplementary gold card on a Platinum account is purely aesthetic. No additional gold benefits.

    • Waddle says:

Amex Platinum allows one supplementary for a partner and one ‘additional card’ to yourself. This doesn’t include the other 4 Gold or Green style free supplementaries. The name on the card will appear as YOUR NAME A.C.

      • MK says:

Ah, looks like there’s not much point then benefits wise! Thank you all for your help.

        • TGLoyalty says:

You are free to apply for an actual Gold Credit Card which has all the benefits

  • Harry T says:

    OT:
Does anyone know if the mystery car at Hertz is worth a punt? Rate is a bit cheaper and a surprise could be fun. I’m Five Star, if that helps.

    • Lumma says:

Years ago I got a free one way rental in New Zealand where I got a Holden Commodore V8 with a corvette engine.

Had to pay for the fuel for it though…

    • Charlieface says:

Never done it myself because the difference was never much. It’s guaranteed at Compact (CDMR) minimum so you can’t really go wrong. You can always ask for an upgrade at Five-Star (even at base Gold) so defo worth a punt if you want to save the money and don’t need a larger car.

      • Harry T says:

It’s 50 AUD less than a compact SU (Qashqai is the example). The only issue is my brother and his girlfriend might be coming too, so that would make four of us in potentially a Compact car. And my brother and are tall, strapping lads. In view of the space requirements, probably worth just booking a compact SUV and asking for an upgrade on that.

As an aside, when I rented from Hertz in Darwin a couple of years back, with my Amex Explorer CDP, I always got completely random cars anyway, including getting a Ford Ranger when I booked a Corolla.

    • John says:

For a SYD booking I once chose the Mystery vehicle as it was cheaper than the otherwise cheapest Hyundai i10, and they gave me an 8-seater van. I had no companions and was HBO on that trip, It wasn’t possible to swap to something smaller.

  • Grant says:

OT – Statement landed today for one of our Virgin + cards (one with a very small credit limit) and this is the first time that we have only received points up to the credit limit spend. Previously having cycled the limit 2 or maybe 3 times the full points were always awarded.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Same here, it was good whilst it lasted..

    • LewisB says:

Ask for a credit increase, you can do this after you’ve held the card for 6 months. Managed to get mine increased to £4,200.

      • Harry T says:

Did you ask for that number or did they reject your proposed credit limit and choose that one for you?

    • Peter K says:

Opposite data point. Spend all at 1.5 pts, including on 27th last month. Several times the minute credit limit.
