The Platinum Card from American Express comes with a lot of airport lounge access benefits:

  • You get two Priority Pass cards, each of which allows two people unlimited access to 1,300 airport lounges globally (so a family of four is covered)
  • You get access to all Plaza Premium lounges with a guest, even those not in Priority Pass, by showing your Platinum card

  • You get access to Delta lounges, when flying with Delta, by showing your Platinum card (no guests allowed)
  • You can access 13 other American Express-brand airport lounges including Stockholm, Delhi, Mumbai, Mexico City x 3, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Monterrey x 2 (Mexico), Melbourne, Sydney and Toluca (pandemic changes not withstanding)

You also get Eurostar lounge access (no guests) by showing your Platinum card.

You can learn more about these benefits in our full American Express Platinum review here. We did a separate feature looking at the benefits of the Amex Platinum card here.

You can also access select Lufthansa lounges with The Platinum Card

A lesser known benefit is the relatively recent deal that American Express has with Lufthansa. This offer was trialled in various forms over a number of years, but the current – and I believe final – version is impressive.

You can access a large proportion of, but not all, Lufthansa lounges globally by showing an American Express Platinum card. You must be flying on Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian Airlines.

For the purposes of this article I just want to focus on the situation at Heathrow Terminal 2, as this is of most benefit to our readers.

How does the Amex Platinum / Lufthansa lounge offer work?

For American Express Platinum cardholders (Centurion cardholders have a different deal):

  • anyone with a flight ticket in Economy on Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian can access the Lufthansa Business Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 2
  • anyone with a flight ticket in Business on Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian can access the Luftansa Senator Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 2

The Senator Lounge is basically a ‘back room’ in the main Business Lounge – it isn’t a separate facility, although it does have a door which requires a code to access.

Guests are an issue

You cannot bring a guest.

Your partner can come with you, of course, if they have a free supplementary Platinum card on your account.

There is no way to get children into the lounge with you under this offer.

Obviously if you and your children are flying in Business Class then they would be allowed into the Business Lounge, but you couldn’t get them into the Senator Lounge.

What is the Lufthansa Heathrow Terminal 2 lounge like?

Here is our most recent review of the Lufthansa Business Class lounge at Heathrow Terminal 2.

I find it a bit bland, like all Lufthansa lounges, but under the surface the fundamentals are fine.

You can find out more about the Lufthansa lounge offer on this page of the American Express website. To find out the exact requirements at the airport you are flying to, search for the airport in the American Express Lounge Directory here.

The door to the Senator lounge is open more than it’s shut..just walk in. Though you’ll probably prefer to be in the bigger and less busy Business side.

  • Barbara says:

Can people travelling with luthansa from Manchester to South Africa get free access to the lounge in frankfurt

  • Muzer says:

Any intel on whether budget subsidiaries like Eurowings would count? I would assume not but I’ve heard mixed messages.

    • Rob says:

Wording seems quite clear that it doesn’t – other subsidiaries such as Brussels are also not listed.

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Count how? As in, flying Eurowings to Dusseldorf in economy and do you get to use the LH biz lounge ar LHR? I expect it probably does work since Eurowings these days often operate on behalf of mainline LH. Don’t bank on it and if it happens, nice surprise

  • Jason Hindle says:

It’s a nice benefit. I’ve used both the business and senator lounges, at FRA, without issue. That said, I do have an issue with the overall package. I think Priority Pass and some of them its partner lounges (at MAN, for example) are harming the Amex brand.

  • Paul says:

The LH lounge in JFK is dreadful. I used it in May when flying on TK and not only was it rammed but the food and beverage offer made BA look good. I don’t get the hype with LHR

    • His Holyness says:

I don’t see any hype here? We all know it’s crap, it’s just close to the short-haul gates and is better than Plaza Premium.

The selection of lounges available to simple Business Class ticket holders in T2 is unparalleled in Europe.

  • jack says:

the senator lounge had identical food to the business lounge when I was there a few weeks back, so stick with business.

  • Luc Janssens says:

Not with Brussels Airlines which is part of the LH group?
