Avios and Barclays Premier agree a long-term points-earning partnership

Last Autumn, Barclays Premier tried to do an ‘under the radar’ trial with Avios, offering 25,000 Avios to a small group of people if they opened a bank account.  The secret trial got ruined when we decided to tell everyone about it.  The good news is that Barclays got to understand how popular this incentive could be!

You can learn more about the 2019 Avios / Barclays Premier offer here.

Unsuprisingly, following the strong response last year, Avios and Barclays have signed a long-term agreement to promote Barclays Premier.

Barclays Premier and Avios

You should note the deal is NOT yet live again and won’t be for a while.  However, when it returns, there will be a generous Avios sign-up bonus for opening a Barclays Premier current account.

You will also be able to earn Avios on “other banking products as well as receive additional loyalty benefits and experience”.

There is nothing to do at the moment, although if you were thinking of moving your banking to HSBC Premier or another premium provider then you may want to hold off for a few months.  An Avios incentive from Barclays Premier will be along soon.

  • BJ says:

To put it in proper perspective though the Barclays deal was not all that great. Readers can currently get about 45,000 avios for switching through First Direct, HSBC and NatWest without the need for £75k income. I wonder if we will see the 25k offer return at Barclays or if they might go for a lower incentive next time given they have seen how popular it was.

    • Ryan says:

      Link?

      • Sandgrounder says:

I think BJ is talking cash equivalent here.

        • BJ says:

Yes, 100/175/175 cash for switching via each banks own website. Spend as you like or 45k avios or thereabouts via buy avios points. Switching 3 accounts online (if eligible) is likely going to be less hassle than opening the Barclays account.. but if you qualify for it too when it next comes along, why not 🙂

          • sloth says:

but that’s also an odd comparison in that you are comparing 3 accounts together against 1? surely it should be like for like ie 1 against 1?

plus wouldn’t you do all 4 over time anyway…? (shouldn’t open too any current accounts too quickly i believe)

          • BJ says:

You could compare them any way you like, no need to be so rigorous. I compared all three because for those in a position to do so, switching all three online may be easier than opening one account at Barclays which might involve a 1h+ hard sell financial review for some.

          • sloth says:

can only comment on my own experience obviously but no hard sell for me, account was open within 20 min meeting and i dont have any other products – (face to face)

  • Ryan says:

Worth doing a comparison piece between Revolut and Curve?

    • Peter K says:

Completely different products. One is effectively a bank account, the other a payment intermediary.

    • Rob says:

They have nothing in common. Revolut is an app-only bank, Curve is simply an intermediary which lets you carry just one Visa/MC instead of several.

  • James P says:

I read it that maybe they are changing Blue Rewards from cash to avios which having already recently been downgraded, seems like a further ‘enhancement’ (depending on avios/£)

    • BJ says:

Let’s face it, avios more or less have to mirror interest rates so other than one off incentives to sign up for other financial products the earning potential is going to be dismal. Furthermore, given Barclays are generally uncompetitive anyway and and those incentives mean you miss out on other Harry avenues they are going to be very expensive avios in real terms. Thus best option will likely be to take the account opening bonus and run.

  • Benilyn says:

Wonder if worth cancelling Premier amount to try hit me sign up offer again? Summer what Barclays typical t+c is on that for other offers they’ve given.

    • BJ says:

Joint accounts might be a possibility for a further bonus if the other person on the account is a new customer. Not sure if joint premier accounts are possible though.

  • BJ says:

OT: @Robert, and everybody. 20% off Emirates up to £300 amex offer using code…
    UKAMX20
Save up to £300 on flights to DubaiWhen you book by 10 March 2020Valid for travel until 30 June 2020

    • Vit says:

BJ, is this applicable for any flights booking via Amex platform or EK website? I just cancel my CA flight and looking via QR or EK now.

      Cheers.

      • BJ says:

Sorry Vit, I don’t know. I saw it somewhere in my amex app, pasted it and posted it right away as Ribert was looking for Emirates deals yesterday U then went back to look and cannot find it, I think it was in amongst my transactions, not on the offers pages. Until somebody can post more details I guess best just to try the code on amex website. However, it may have it’s own embedded booking page as it took ne to one when I clicked on it.

        • BJ says:

Ok… it’s 20% discount maximum £50, £100 and £300 off economy, business and first class respectively.

Now here’s the fun part, people north of Luton should take care not to die laughing…the offer excludes travel from LHR except in economy.

… once Londoners get over their shock, I guess you can still fly from Ryanairport or Gatwick, enjoy the lounges.

          • Jonathan says:

Basically false advertising then as I don’t believe you can get anywhere in business for less than £1k or first for less than £2k (probably more like £1.5 & £3k) so best it can possibly be is 10% discount.

  • Nick says:

Personally, like a lot of people, I believe, I’ll pick up the in flight magazines on short haul flights when there’s no in flight entertainment available, but tend not to bother on long haul. I guess that if I really wanted to read them I may download them, but just don’t see it happeneing really. Maybe just pick one up in the lounge, if I remember, (and if they still provide them there of course), but I’m probably more likely to pick up a different mag, or newspaper there, and take that onboard.

    • jamie says:

I was on a LHR-GLA flight last night with the High LIfe download offer. I didn’t bother, preferring to snooze.

  • Edd M says:

I agree, I think both magazines are actually quite good. Part of the attraction though is that they’re physical magazines – downloads just don’t cut it.

    • Shoestring says:

      +1

I’ll never download it but always used to have a look at the real magazines

Goodbye, High Life/ Business Life – it was nice knowing you

      • DB2020 says:

        +1

Reading High Life and Business Life has been the highlight of my short haul flights.

  • reddot says:

The 40% Picturehouse discount on a 8-ticket bundle (Member Plus) made it well worth the switch to Barclays – we used it during Xmas / New Year holiday and got more for the family. You also get 30% off the Art Pass so we have cancelled ours to re-subscribe later this year.

    • sloth says:

they also give you free cinema tickets 2/3 times a year (last ones few weeks ago), bottles of wine from majestic/chocolates from hotel chocolate for birthday/fathers day etc, a years free English Heritage membership and years Gourmet Society. all for something that costs you nothing and used properly ‘earns’ you £36 a year if not more
