British Airways cancelling flights to Northern Italy due to coronavirus

Yesterday we ran a long article summarising the latest British Airways and Virgin Atlantic travel policies on coronavirus.

It was partly out of date before it went live, as the Italian Government published a law on Saturday night to place a quarter of the country under quarantine.

As of Sunday evening, British Airways has cancelled for Monday:

all flights to Venice

10/11 flights to Milan

the one flight to Bergamo

This is the new BA guidance for anyone with tickets to Italy.  I ran this in a separate article yesterday but wanted to repeat it here for the benefit of our email readers.

That said, if all flights are now cancelled, the guidance doesn’t make much difference!

Here are the rules:

Rules apply to anyone travelling to Milan, Venice, Turin, Bergamo, Bologna, Verona

If you are booked for travel until 4th April, you can rebook for free for dates up to 31st May

You can also request a diversion to Zurich or Geneva

Here is the new bit added during Sunday:

Anyone with tickets to Milan, Venice or Bergamo for travel by 4th April can now request a full refund

  • Algor says:

My flight on Tuesday is also cancelled, I’m unable to access MMB.

Last flight to Milan from LCY is still showing as available to book but there is an error while fare is calculated so all 11/11 flights are cancelled Monday and Tuesday.

Need to find alternative for Lake Como, any suggestions for BA & HH combo?

    • Cat says:

Lake Como is within the quarantine zone. Unless you have a reason deemed valid, you won’t be allowed in…

      • Anna says:

I think Algor means an alternative destination! Switzerland?

        • Algor says:

Direct train from Zurich to Como is only 3h, stil tempting but considering possible faff getting out I’ll pass.

I need to be back in London on Saturday night so atm considering Rome, Algarve and Dubrovnik for a quick 4 nights.

          • sarah says:

You will need to self isolate for 14 days when you return if you travel within the quarantine zone – I’d avoid

          • Cat says:

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood, and thought you meant an alternative route. Clearly I need more tea in the morning.
Personally I recommend Dubrovnik – it’s gorgeous, and the exec lounge has stunning views over the old city walls and out to sea, if you have access. Do a couple of trips out to the islands too!
The Algarve is stunning too, but I think the best bits are Pine Cliffs and the area around Lagos!

  • Anna says:

Just in case we need to change travel plans in the next 4 weeks – does the BA First phone line deal with changes to bookings or just things like spa treatments?!

    • Spursdebs says:

I’ve always used them to change my 1st bookings.

      • Anna says:

Thanks Debs, that’s good to know, just in case! MIA apparently expecting an outbreak of Coronavirus as the Spring Break revellers descend, though they haven’t cancelled any of it!!

        • Funnnnnnn says:

Do you have any idea how much ‘fun’ Spring Break is?!?!?!?!?

          • Anna says:

We don’t go till Easter so hopefully will miss the worst excesses!

  • Bob says:

Regarding toxic cabin air: Searching in http://avherald.com/ for ‘fume’ ‘smell’ and ‘odour’ there are plenty of incidents to be found. Apparently due to lubricants in jet engines leaking into the cabin. I had this on two occassions (A320 intra-Europe and a transatlantic B767) and the smell is a combination of dirty socks with melting or burning plastic. Both events resulted in a sore throat and coughing but the incidents in these articles are more disturbing.

  • Alex says:

We were on the BA103 from London to Calgary diverted for an emergency landing to Iqaluit. Fumes in the cockpit so pilots were on oxygen. A scary experience.

    • BJ says:

I bet the air became even more toxic after the emergency landing was announced.

  • Speedbird676 says:

    Fake news on headforpoints.com

  • Boi says:

OT: where’s best place to buy oil shares? Prices are down with corona….or will they go down even further?
Still waiting for Harry to tell us what to buy and when. Lol.

    • Shoestring says:

you don’t need to look further than BP and Royal Dutch Shell, as they are properly run/ regulated companies

nobody is going to get the timing perfect except through luck, so one strategy is to drip-feed your investment in over time – you won’t buy at the overall best time (cheapest), but otoh your average buying price will be OK

    • Genghis says:

Or just buy all of market to diversify? I’m hoping markets are depressed for us sticking another 2 x £20k into ISAs from 6 April

      • BJ says:

If current trends in China and SK continue over the next two weeks that’ll probably be enough to at least steady the markets despite riing cases elsewhere.

    • Spaghetti Town says:

I wouldn’t buy anything for a few more days. I think there’s time to plummet further.

Safer bets would be legal & general or aviva

      • Reg says:

except, hasn’t AV. has been a dog for a decade?

        • Spaghetti Town says:

Well depends what you want, great if you’re looking for dividends like myself. BP’s been on a downward trend for years anyway.

  • Simon says:

OT. Amex BAPP 241. If my partner and I were to both have earned a ba amex 241 voucher each and we become a household account, can we both book 2 x 241 using my avios stash?

She has hardly any, I have loads. Ideally we’d book us and both kids on a nice 2 x 241.

    • Anna says:

You would have to make 2 separate bookings as the vouchers would be in 2 different account, BUT with a HHA yes you can use anybody’s Avios (they will be taken pro-rata from each account). Put one parent and one child in each booking – the kids will need to have accounts as well.

  • Manu says:

We booked the Bogota flash sale out of Italy Friday. As Milan is closed and we are flying, should we email Iberia already saying we will not fly the first leg according to Italian law or wait till last day to announce it?

I am afraid Iberia will cancel the tickets.
