British Airways cancelling flights to Northern Italy due to coronavirus

Yesterday we ran a long article summarising the latest British Airways and Virgin Atlantic travel policies on coronavirus.

It was partly out of date before it went live, as the Italian Government published a law on Saturday night to place a quarter of the country under quarantine.

As of Sunday evening, British Airways has cancelled for Monday:

all flights to Venice

10/11 flights to Milan

the one flight to Bergamo

This is the new BA guidance for anyone with tickets to Italy.  I ran this in a separate article yesterday but wanted to repeat it here for the benefit of our email readers.

That said, if all flights are now cancelled, the guidance doesn’t make much difference!

Here are the rules:

Rules apply to anyone travelling to Milan, Venice, Turin, Bergamo, Bologna, Verona

If you are booked for travel until 4th April, you can rebook for free for dates up to 31st May

You can also request a diversion to Zurich or Geneva

Here is the new bit added during Sunday:

Anyone with tickets to Milan, Venice or Bergamo for travel by 4th April can now request a full refund

  • Grant says:

OT 50% bonus on Avios purchases from BA – 9 March thru 22 March.

    • Anna says:

So you can buy Avios but not check in for a flight? 🤦🏻‍♀️

      • Shoestring says:

        it’s the usual 200K = 100K = £3215

you could have got them for £3000 on Iberia a few days ago

  • Benilyn says:

OT: For Kurve – is it possible to add cards not in your name? I used to be able to (early 2019 maybe) and still have them on stored cards, but struggle for new cards which is annoying for 6mths+ now. Is anyone else the same?

  • Tanya Wade says:

OT flying club world to jo’burg on Wednesday. Which lounge is best (I know they are all reportedly a bit rubbish). Also what are my chances of getting into the Elemis spa with so many flights being cancelled?

    • Stu N says:

T5B lounge is best of the Galleries lounges. They won’t give you a gate number until an hour or so before but 90+ % of Long Haul flights go from 5B and 5C. You can walk back in unlikely event you go from 5A.

You also have the best chance of getting a Spa treatment on a walk-up basis at T5B.

      • Anna says:

+1 on T5 B but I wouldn’t bother with the spa treatment just now, don’t know who’s touched all those bottles of products!

        • Lady London says:

You’re right @Anna. Do you think British Airways will be along soon to say that due to coronavirus they’ve suspended all spa treatments everywhere?

  • Aston100 says:

Is there a limit to how much or how often you can use Amex through paypal to gift your friends & family without incurring any fees or causing aggravation?
    Thx.

    • Peter K says:

I can’t give figures but PayPal are quite touchy from comments. A few hundred very occasionally (2-3x year) seems okay if you do numerous normal transactions.

      • Lady London says:

Don’t risk anything with PayPal. They have improved but talking to trees is a lot better than if you happen to have to deal with PayPal’s centre in the Philippines.

  • Heathrow Flyer says:

Anyone been charged cash interest on Revolut top-ups recently (i.e. last 2 weeks)?

    Interested in hearing data points.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes (creation charge it) but no (I’ve over paid my card so when the transaction hits it’s from a credit balance)

  • Liam says:

OT — I’m at the Centurion Lounge in PHX right now. I got here at 8.30am so maybe missed the morning rush but I’d estimate this place is about 25% full. It’s turned out to be a very pleasant place to do an hour’s work pre-flight, although I’m interested if it does ever get busy in here. The Centurion Lounge at DFW (a bigger airport, admittedly) was rammed when I went there on a Friday afternoon a month or two ago.

    • Anna says:

I have visions of it being packed with J R Ewing lookalikes. I will probably be very disappointed if I do visit Dallas one day.

      • Shoestring says:

central Dallas is actually very walkable, so different to a lot of US cities – very pleasant place to go bar / restaurant hopping etc – also I know it’s just one person’s experience but I found the locals very charming & welcoming, I’m not exactly a big fan of many aspects of the States but Dallas is well worth a visit

        • Doug M says:

Did you go in the last 20 years? I first went in the early 80’s, and it was a dump to visit. Everyone lived in the ‘burbs, and downtown was a ghost town after 6PM and weekends. Then they had this big drive to reinvent it, and it’s now very pleasant. Brought residential back to the central area, and it’s a good visit. You can easily drive Dalles-Fort Worth – Austin – San Antonio. All good places in different ways. BBQ uuuummmmmmm

          • Polly says:

Def better now. I also lived there early 80s, had driving lessons on Stemmons freeway..lived in the burbs, worked at Parkland Memorial ER. Downtown bare then, but much improved now.
And Anna, you can even visit South-fork ranch! Due to visit there, en route to HNL, if we ever get there too! The lounge is full of Stetsons tho. They just love em.

  • Nick says:

Re: Travel insurance for Holiday in USA

I have Amex Plat travel insurance- does not cover pre-existing conditions.

One child has nut allergy – so plan to take another policy out.
Do I need to list just one person on this additional policy? Or all travelling family members?

bit peeved having to shell out another £180 on top of the Plat annual Fee!

    • the_real_a says:

The rest of the family relying on the Amex Plat policy wont be covered for any cancellation/extension caused directly from the nut allergy of your kid. So it dependents if you need this element covered.

  • meta says:

O/T Hotels.com is back for Clubcard voucher redemptions. It might not be long…

    • the_real_a says:

Unexpected, but very welcome. I may do a few speculative redemption’s.

      • Peter K says:

Don’t forget that tesco/hotels.com redemptions are non-refundable, even if you book a refundable rate. You lose the voucher once it’s used and it doesn’t come back if cancelled.

        • the_real_a says:

True…and the Tesco code once transferred to Hotels.com is only valid for 3 months (i thought it was 6) before a booking has to be made.

          • meta says:

Is it not six? Last year when I did it, it was valid for six.

          • the_real_a says:

My last exchange was the last day in Septemeber and expired the first day of January, i’m sure it was 6 months at one point.
