The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 24th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

    I have already asked this before but I think nobody answered.

    I’m just curious; why are so many people having problems with flights. I know you have to book directly for redemptions but it seems a lot of people are asking about cash bookings too.

    Why has there been such a hassle for everyone. Is it because y’all booked directly or used no agents?

    I’m asking for science…

      I always book with agents and I keep getting emails from Etihad that they have rebooked me after cancelling but I’ve just ignored as I was told my agents are cancelling everyone’s holiday.

    • It is far worse if you use a travel agent because your contract is with them and not with the airline. You are reliant on the agent arranging the refund, on which they earn nothing so you are bottom of the queue. At present, many have laid off staff so there is physically no-one to do your refund. You may then find that the agents T&Cs allow them to charge you a fat fee for processing your refund. If you’re really lucky, the agent will get your money back from BA and then promptly go bust, meaning you need to start a chargeback.

      Even in good days, using a travel agent is a mess because you can never call the airline. Any issues with your booking need to be routed via your agent.

        Well it’s Trailfinders and so far they’ve been good with information etc.

        I don’t see them going under and I have it in writing they will refund. Maybe I’m wrong but I like not having to call companies up for refunds.

        Maybe it’s risky but then again I’m a risky person.

          So Rob, from what you said I gather it’s because everyone here books directly as you didn’t really answer my initial question directly.

          • The issue here is unique. In normal times, getting a refund for a cancelled flight if you booked direct is easy, but if you booked via an agent it is hard. The agent has to do some work which won’t earn them any money. Unsurprisingly they are not rushing around to help you.

            (Trailfinders is probably an exception here, to be fair, because they are excellent.)

            At the moment, because the airlines are trying to conserve cash, they are trying to avoid paying up to everyone – direct bookers and agent customers alike.

            Thanks for your detailed answer.

            I have always booked with Trailfinders and never had issues even when problems occur that’s why I don’t really know much.

            I don’t have a comparison with other agents I thought they are all probably easier.

          I had it in writing from Flybe that my mum was arriving, but that never happened.

    I have a booking for a non refundable villa in cyprus using BA Avios,
    is there any way for me to get my 75,000 Avios refunded?
    its for next week

    • Seems not. Most properties booked with Avios are via Expedia in reality – if Expedia was refunding then you might have a chance. However, it is down to the owner of the villa at the end of the day.

        i spoke to the owner of the villa, and he says he is giving full refunds, but this has to be requested by the agent!
        i then called BA and they said they make the booking through a third party, and can’t cancel it for me.
        i asked BA for the name of the third party, they wouldn’t give it and said i anyway can’t contact them directly about my ba booking.
        any advice? worth me calling expedia? what ref should i give?

        • Dig out your booking confirmation and see who your legal contract is with. This is the person who has to fix it. If it’s a villa it might not be Expedia (all the hotels are Expedia) although very likely to be another company that Expedia owns.

            My contract is with “Avios Group (AGL) Limited and British Airways Plc”.
            But they already told me on the phone that they went on to make the booking through a third party.
            I just have a feeling that since its non-refundable, they BA/Expedia don’t care to not cancel it for me, as they don’t lose anything, even though the villa is offering full refunds:-(

            invoke credit card section 75 protection to demand a full refund

          • On what grounds? The villa is available if the person can get to Cyprus.

            I paid using Avios in full, so no credit card involved
