The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 24th March

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

In these unusual times a more usual HFP request. We are off to Canada later this year (maybe) and flying Air Canada signature class, anyone experienced this as we are not sure which are the best seats for a couple, i.e. centre seats or aisle between. Hope someone can help. We land at Montreal.

    • Years since I flew AC so I will refrain from comment on that. However, if this is your first visit then I highly recommend allowing some time in Montreal for a day trip to Quebec City either by hire car or coach tour.

      • U old git says:

Thanks BJ. If we actually get there we will try to include this visit

  2. Osaka Des says:

People who are rough sleeping are amongst the most vulnerable and at the moment lack the support they need.
As far as I am aware, BA, VIRGIN and other airlines have grounded almost all their long haul planes. As HOP readers are aware, these contain large numbers of flat beds.
    Just a thought……

Let’s hope there’s a Hilton devaluation for anyone who cashed out.

    • Shoestring says:

why would you wish financial harm or impairment on other people for cashing out to Hilton?

      • Because Virgin customer services have better things to be doing right now – and a hoard of people cashing out to Hilton is obviously going to put unnecessary pressure on Virgin at a difficult time. Admittedly probably insignificant in the scheme of things but still seems selfish – bit like grabbing more than you need in the supermarket!

        • Shoestring says:

well ‘selfish’ isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it means looking out for your own interests, and that usually means looking out for your family’s interests as well – all very natural & normal

I’m so pleased Covid-19 isn’t killing anybody much under 30 (barring underlying conditions) – think how much worse it would be if day to day you were worried about your kids getting it & perishing

          • Shoestring says:

let’s hope I actually get my online groceries order on the 28th – up to £600 already and I keep remembering some more things to buy 🙂

          • Genghis says:

I transferred out. Was I being selfish? Perhaps. But people are naturally selfish as they look after themselves. Virgin haven’t given me those miles out of the goodness of their heart.

Do I wish direct harm on others, however, no.

        • Ming the Merciless says:

@robburgess did you keep your 1m FC points with virgin or cash out?

      • That money, even if it all went to the airline (and its not, the hotels and cruise line are getting a share) would last 3-4 weeks at best.

        • Novice says:

True and he has health clubs too… If this is the amount for collectively spending on his brand then it’s not enough…

  4. joe green says:

Anyway got any experience with Hotels.com reward nights extending validity?
I have 1 free night and close to 2nd but due to expire this week and would like to know if they will agree an extension?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Book a cheap hotel somewhere? That’ll extend it by a year.

I find that 9/10 I get the “how was your check-in” hours before I’ve actually checked in as hotels confirm you’ve arrived when you havn’t to get their money…

  5. Secret Squirrel says:

Tesco Pet Insurance points – we’ve hit 36x days and no points posted.
What’s the average time period others have seen points post recently?

  6. Brasov says:

Harry, how are the morrisons gift cards going for you now on petrol? I’ve been refused a few times now.

    • Shoestring says:

I used them a few days ago & so did my wife, no problems though we did have to explain there’s now a Morrisons Giftcard button on the till, press it then scan giftcard (new procedure for the staff)

is it just that the staff don’t know what to do?

      • Brasov says:

I guess so. They press the Gift Card button, and then it comes up with “Manual Entry Not Allowed”. So they give up at that point. Apparently it’s a totally new till system. They did say paper vouchers are still OK.

        • I’m guessing they were trying to tap in the Gift Card Number rather than scanning it?

  7. Shoestring says:

Since it’s Chat thread! so if you remember my computer went phut in the night 2 weeks ago or so – nothing showing at all on start up – looked like the power supply unit to my uneducated eyes so I took it to a local shop, the guy tested it and said I was right so he ordered the part and fitted it a few days later. £40 all in, not sure you’d get that in London! The PSU must have cost £20+ plus I don’t think it was quite as simple as plug out old one, plug in new one.

Anyway, got my old faithful machine back. (Remember to back up data, folks).

    • If you’d get something more modern you wouldn’t need to remember Harry.

      • Shoestring says:

        tell me how that works

automatic data saving to the cloud or some such?

        and payable?

I have a couple of separate external/ portable SSDs that I use to back up data (if I remember, so maybe twice a year!)

        • Don’t know what your laptop is but in addition to dropbox as suggested by Rob have a look at onedrive or google drive.. If your kids also have windows laptops you may have or could look into an Office 360 Home subscription as this comes with 1TB storage for free, up to five devices.

          • Yes, cheapest option is arguably Office 360 Home with the OneDrive storage. I had Dropbox before we moved to Office 360 Home which is why I never switched but both do the same job, as does Google Drive.

In simple terms …. you get a folder on your laptop called Dropbox. It looks like any other folder and the files are physically on your laptop. Any change you make to this folder gets copied to a clone of your Dropbox folder in the cloud and copies automatically to your other machines when you turn them on next.

Also works well if you only have 1 computer, as you get a cloud back-up of everything you own. Buy a new laptop and all your files are automatically installed as soon as you add Dropbox.

    • What I do is put everything in Dropbox. This essentially clones my laptop x 3 across all my machines and gives total protection against loss or damage to any single machine. I can also access files on my phone if needed vis their app.

  8. Shoestring says:

    Fancy that!

[Japan Olympics to be delayed for one year
After a conference call between the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, Tokyo’s governor, Yuriko Koike, and the International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, the Olympics will be postponed for 12 months. Abe said a postponement was unavoidable if the 2020 Games could not be held in a complete manner amid the coronavirus pandemic.]

  9. BA is currently showing availability in FIRST for domestic LHR-EDI in a A319. This is a mistake surely?

    specifically BA1448 on 27/03

  10. I have a Virgin Reward flight from MAN to JFK on 9 Apr returning 12 April. Obviously the flight will not now go ahead and no longer shows in the schedules, but it still shows as ‘on time’ on my account. When is it likely to be formally cancelled, triggering a return of miles / tax refund? I’m not sure I can face hours on the phone to Virgin – will they just contact me eventually?

  11. Unofficially AA now offering voucher + 20% instead of refund. This beats the AerLingus voucher + 10%.
