We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

  1. Does Curve still work with NS&I?

    My transaction was declined, but I also tried using Curve on a normal shopping site and it was also declined, so not sure if it’s a problem with my account

  2. I have a one way Avios booking GCM-LHR-MAN for late April which I haven’t been able to cancel online as I just get a message saying the only the person who booked it can do this, even though it was me who booked it!
    I’ve just had a text from BA saying LHR-MAN is cancelled (thanks for stranding us in LHR, BA, even though this won’t actually happen as we can’t get to GCM to start with). Should I assume GCM-LHR will be cancelled in due course, GCM being on lockdown to commercial flights? I am hoping so as I think that would mean I would be refunded, Avios, fees and seat selection.

  3. I have a miles redemption return flight booked with Virgin to USA in late April. I assume miles and associated taxes will be returned to me in some form or another when the flight gets cancelled. I have also “boosted” my miles for a fee. Will these “boosted” miles ever appear in my account and if not, will the associated fee for the boosted miles be returned?

    So I was due to fly out on ba033 to KUL today and onwards to Perth with Malaysian airlines tomorrow . Returning same means on 5th April .

    My Malaysian flights were booked with budgetair and after both flights were cancelled I emailed and received a confirmation I would recieve a full refund .

    Ba flights however were only cancelled a few days ago . After multiple tries to get through to BYOJet the booking agent , they finally answered today after 2.5h on hold .
    Both my flights are cancelled however they said I still needed to pay an admin fee of £55 to cancel my flights . They told me to speak to ba if I had a problem with it and if I didn’t cancel I would forfeit the whole flight .
    It was £3000 so I didn’t really want to lose that so just agreed to take the refund minus £55 .

    Is this right ? If my flight is cancelled should I really have to pay an admin fee?

    Obviously I will complain afterwards – especially when they put me on the spot and said I would forfeit the entire booking if I didn’t cancel it now . Flight was due to depart in 3h so I wasn’t going to risk anything at that point .
    Advise appreciated – I booked on Amex plat and have nationwide flex plus insurance if that helps – maybe I could claim through them ?

      it will be in your T&Cs

      if not – check – you can claim against them afterwards but you got your £3K back

    The work around for getting a refund on cash bookings no longer appears to work, as they send you to a completely different page when you click through MMB. Disabling javascript does nothing to help. You only option when cancelling online through MMB is now to accept a travel voucher.

    BA has cancelled the outbound leg of my return flights from NCL to LHR in April/May but not the inbound, so I’m trying to find a way to claim my cash refund under EC261. Obviously ringing would be inappropriate at this stage. Any suggestions?

  6. Hello all. Interesting times we live in. I have AMEX Platinum at the moment and am almost certainly going to cancel at renewal shortly. The question I have is where to go next – I have stacks of MR points that I want to keep hold of and dont want to convert out. Was looking at Gold due to travel insurance/lounge passes/benefits etc however in the current climate I wonder whether that will be worth it.
    I also have a dilemma with my Platinum – I booked a lot of travel, hotels etc using the Platinum card for later this year. Has not been cancelled – yet – but might be further down the line. What happens with regard to the travel insurance cover that I would have had for these trips if I no longer have Platinum card? Will they no longer be covered?

      If you cancel plat you no longer have any travel insurance. But you could purchase some on the day of cancellation.

          For the big stuff sure. For the inconvenience stuff where it relies on use of a previously cancelled card, it’s uncertain. Others with direct experience might offer a better opinion.

          However, the definition of a card member is to have a “valid account” and given the account used for initial booking isn’t valid, insurance not valid where card use is required.

    Heir to the throne follows a good example set by Shoestring of HFP fame and is self-isolating in the Highlands.

    Prince Charles flew north to his secomnd home and is now self-isolating at his home in Birkhall, Aberdeenshire, separately from the Duchess of Cornwall,

    Some shoppers were so keen to secure delivery slots weeks in advance that they simply ordered bottles of champagne worth £40 – a typical minimum spend on an online order – to their basket to allow them to amend the order later with other items.

  9. So….I posted a few days ago regarding Emirates refusing to provide a full refund on First flights (only vouchers or £300 per ticket cancellation fee). Amex have approved the chargeback (within about 2 days) and closed the case. Not sure if they’ll be allowed to dispute (I have a merchant account and normally have 14 days to dispute) but here’s hoping all ok now.

    Just wondering – if they’re not going with tallying up stuff….what happens if I don’t contact them regarding a refund, bearing in mind the flight is cancelled? Part of me would really like to screw them over given their refusal to refund and even getting that amount in vouchers would be awesome (over and above the full refund) 🙂

    • If you are suggesting getting a full refund and accepting vouchers as compensation this is quite obviously fraud. Maybe it’s unlikely that you ever caught but not impossible – could be banned for life from Emirates or end up being made an example of and incur expensive legal costs. Why risk it?

      • I wouldn’t go out of way and ask for it. Just curious if they’ll maybe automatically give me a credit voucher that I happen to take advantage of in 6 months time.

        Guessing it’s a slim chance anyway!

        • I don’t know if that many of their passengers would file a charge back actually, I think most people would try and sort it with their airline or be fobbed off with a voucher, so it’s maybe not that slim of a chance, but really who knows! Slim chance of getting sued though, or even arrested in Dubai changing planes – unlikely I know but people have got into legal trouble for far less!

      chargebacks can still be reversed if airline reopens it with CC. QR did it to me (incorrectly) and the chargge was put back on, I had to requery. don’t think they’ll let you off the hook.

    The good news is probably 15% of us already had Covid-19 and got away with it

    The bad news is: the Govt will rapidly be issuing tests to establish who already has immunity (to the current strain/s) – ie so that essential workers can go back to work

    I had a very strange lung issue on hols around Xmas, tightness and short breathing, when I got back to UK I went to see the Docs. They did a series of tests, as I’d had bad pneumonia 2 years ago they tested that but said no, lung capacity 100% though I said no way is that true, probably they said 100% as I am normally very fit (all the 12 mile walks) but more like 80% for me.

    They sent me for various tests incl chest X rays, 24 hr blood pressure, blood tests etc, all of which I thought useless but I did anyway.

    Because I’d demanded – for the first time in my life! – 5 day antibiotics, I thought the doctors had failed to diagnose lung issues and antibiotics might just possibly sort it out.

    5 days later I was well again but I did their tests for the hell of it and all very useful but I’d already nailed it and I’m not a doctor.

  11. Just cancelled BA Avios booking which I used a GUF 2 voucher on that was about to expire.
    Will I get the voucher reinstated with a further 6 months to use it ?
