The new HFP chat thread – Thursday 26th March

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

  1. Email from Emirates that EDI to DXB 5th April cancelled. 4 seats paid by Amex Starwood card. Email says to get in touch within 3 days of departure. Best process for a refund? Cheers

  2. Hotels.com reward expiry? Anyone heard if they will be extending expiry, I have slowly been building up a reasonable balance on hotels.com rewards, however they will expire in June if I don’t earn or spend before then. Is there any news on whether they will be pausing expiry like other chains?

  3. BeardFatigue says:

Anyone know how long refunds take to hit card from QR? Was flying OSL-DOH-BKK but self-cancelled and took the hit.

    • QR allow you to defer a flight for a fee around £400. Only found that out by chance when we had a funeral that might have made us change our plans. They were very helpful. It was useful to know this for any future bookings.
Think you have to allow a couple of weeks in the current sit.

      • BeardFatigue says:

Thanks Polly – yes, offered £600 to move out at the time plus fare increase as we were on the cheapest bus ticket.

  4. koroleon says:

What are my options for a very delayed refund? I cancelled an Avios award booking (booked with the Lloyds voucher) 4 weeks ago and I still haven’t received anything, not even a confirmation email. The call centre is useless. Can’t go through my credit card (not even sure that’s an option) as it wouldn’t get me the miles. Any ideas?

    • Koroleon,
Same situation from week past Tuesday, though they warned that it might take some time, not too worried as long as it actually happens, though a month delay sounds excessive. Best I can suggest is give them a call and make sure it is still outstanding and hasn’t gone into limbo (which is what I will do). Incidentally even when they are very busy the US number seems to work (and actually routes to Ireland so doesn’t cost the earth).
Interesting to compare with BA where I had to unwind some cancelled bookings today and email was with me as we spoke, pretty impressed at speed and overall helpfulness (Newcastle centre of course).

  5. OT. BA just lowered my TP threshold by 30% so ill be Gold for another year. Lets just hope I get to use it.

    • planeconcorde says:

Did you request this or have you benefited from a blanket policy change?

    • Will in SFO says:

According to another site BAEC members have been emailed today to say that anyone for renewal in April, May or June is having their TP threshold lowered by 30%. No one in my family of four- two of whom have their tier point year expiring in May and are silver currently- have had the email.

      • Yes, they sent me the same email. Mine was due on the 8th April.

No it wasnt a request, just got the email out the blue.

      • Sunguy says:

8th May – got the email and got the TP 🙂

        • Got the email, am on the right side of the cut too so will retain gold despite cancellations.

Just hope there’s somewhere to fly to…

    • I’ve had the same email, my year ends 8th June

    • stevenhp1987 says:

So my wife is Silver, has 1,280 Tier Points and her year ends next month.

She’ll become Gold next month? At least we get something out of it!

I’m only sat on 320 Tier Points with cancelled flights so no Silver for me this year 🙁

      • TGLoyalty says:

I don’t know I was silver and re-qualified for Silver already TP year ends May and I got the email but not mention of 30% less tp just that any vouchers I have have been extended by 6 months.

  6. If someone has a booking on Qatar that was made via an OTA and the outbound flight has been cancelled but the return has yet to be cancelled, what options do they have?

Presumably they would have to contact the OTA and not Qatar, but would they be entitled to a full refund?

    • Lady London says:

If your flight sequence on your ticket departs from Europe you are covered by EC261 which goes you the right to choose a full refund of the actual she ticket if airline cancels any flight on it. You are not legally obliged to a accept a voucher even if the airline days that’s all they’re offering.

You may have to pay an admin fee if you booked through an agent if their terms included that

QR won’t talk to you direct, most likely, and will send you to agent. So advise agent you want a refund, ask them to get confirmation of refund from QR. Most likely QR will try only voucher. You have the full right to a cash refund. If you get nowhere after reasonable efforts go to your insurance and after that if paid on credit card ask cardco for Section 75 (s.75) refund or chargeback. Charge cards may also operate chareback but not s75.

  7. OT Hi, my IHG Premium card anniversary was beginning of March. I’ve received my first statement after anniversary last week with the account fee posted. In the statement there’s only a small charge for interest along with the fee and no other spend.

If I cancel now, can I just pay the interest charge and avoid paying the card fee? Or can’t get the card fee back at this point?

    Thanks

    • Lady London says:

Easyjet is pulling the exact same overcharging trick when passengers change flights.

Back in November they were regularly asking me to pay large amounts in cash to them as a “fare difference” when I changed flights. This was in addition to the value of the flight I was changing.

I was quoted total amounts to change easyJet flights several times, of, say, £60 or £85. They said this was the fare difference. The trouble was, those same exact flights could be purchased on the internet, at exactly the same time, for £13 or £16. There was a “fare difference” only if you phone easyJet.

  8. FlyerTalk just reporting Coronavirus Executive Club Tier Flexibility Policy

    Tier qualification thresholds:

  9. Hi guys

I ordered some wine through BA Avios. It didn’t arrive and laithwaites say they never received the order from BA. any idea what I can do?

    Thanks

    • Do you mean you paid with Avios and did you originally get an order confirmation from BA? If so, and you have proof that Laithwaite’s never got the order, you will need to take it up with BA, which could be a bit difficult at the moment.

  10. I wish people wouldn’t say (or write) “flaunt” when they mean “flout” (the lockdown rules). Being stuck at home is bringing out my inner grammar pedant!

One of the most egregious examples.

And when did babies start being called “newborns” ?
