British Airways covid updates: terminal and airport moves, catering cuts, cargo-only flights

There have been a few British Airways coronavirus developments in recent days which are worth mentioning.  We didn’t rush out an article at the time as very few of you are currently flying, but it is worth being up to speed with what is going on.

British Airways pulling out of London Gatwick

British Airways has moved all flights from London Gatwick to London Heathrow Terminal 5 with immediate effect.

The move was probably inevitable when Gatwick decide to restrict its opening hours to 2pm to 10pm.  The North Terminal closed last night – easyJet had already grounded its flights – and all remaining flights are now consolidated into the South Terminal.

Officially, this is due to run until 1st May.  Unofficially, the move could last a lot longer.  If British Airways resumes a ‘full’ flight programme at relatively low levels of capacity – and it is unthinkable that all destinations will reopen to passenger traffic at the same time – then I can imagine the entire operation remaining at Heathrow.

The same goes for Virgin Atlantic, which has consolidated its few remaining services at Heathrow.

BA’s Gatwick flights will all move to Heathrow Terminal 5 because ….

British Airways has moved out of Heathrow Terminal 3

The last British Airways flights from Heathrow Terminal 3 were due to take place on Sunday.

All future services to cities including (this is not a full list) Cape Town, Miami, Las Vegas, Barcelona, Lisbon and Prague will now be from Terminal 5.

British Airways has also decided to permanently end flights to Helsinki.  This was another Terminal 3 route.  BA’s oneworld partner Finnair will now be the sole operator from Heathrow.  This is unfortunate as British Airways often ran good Club Europe deals to Helsinki for £250 or less, whilst Finnair is substantially more expensive in Business Class.

Finnair is continuing to run two daily flights between Helsinki and Heathrow during the current crisis.

Changes to British Airways catering

If you are travelling soon, you will notice substantial changes to in-flight catering.  Basically, there isn’t any.

On short-haul, you will receive a bottle of water and a pack of pretzels in Euro Traveller.  (Buy On Board is no more.)  Hot drinks are described as available ‘on request’.  In Club Europe, you get a biscuit instead of the pretzels.

On long-haul, you will not receive anything more adventurous than a sandwich, irrespective of which class you are flying.  Passengers are being encouraged to bring their own food although, due to security restrictions and the fact that most airside restaurants are closed, this isn’t always practical.  BA will not reheat any food you bring yourself.

All special meal options are suspended.

No alcoholic drinks will be provided.

Menu cards, newspapers, magazines, ice etc have been removed from aircraft.

  • Andrew says:

Singapore Airlines just emailed about their status extension plan, nice and simple like Hilton – if only BA could be as straight forward for once:

“I would also like to share that we will automatically renew all KrisFlyer Elite and PPS Club membership statuses for another 12 months at the end of their membership year. This applies to all memberships expiring from March 2020 through to February 2021.”

    • Nick says:

Conveniently, you missed the part where they also said “refunds will be paid onto a credit voucher”. BA is still paying real refunds (though you have to call). SQ might be nicer with a status extension, but I’d wager most people would prefer BA’s overall attitude right now.

  • Jani says:

Regards to the Helsinki route termination.
Tried to have a look on BA Media Centre to read more, but couldn’t find anything.
Rob – How do they announce nowadays route terminations?
    Thanks!

    • Rob says:

They don’t. They just remove the flights from the booking system and email those already ticketed to offer alternatives.

  • Max says:

At what capacity are Luton and Stansted operating? A fair amount of news on easyJet but haven’t seen much coverage of Ryanair, are they in a similar position?

  • Gringo says:

    Who is travelling now?

    • Rob says:

I’m surprised more people aren’t heading to Stockholm. No lockdown, everything open as usual. 4 BA flights per week it seems and reasonably priced. Hotels are also a fraction of their usual prices.

      • Kyle says:

I was thinking about going – but I am concerned I’ll be turned away. I am a UK resident but have a South African passport (with visa). And with the eu non essential ban – it would likely cause me to not get through the gates.

Otherwise I’d be on a plane this weekend. 🙈

        • Riku says:

There is no EU travel ban. The Commission does not have the rights to decide entry requirements for individual states. They made a recommendation to the member states but individual states decide what to do. Sweden has not blocked entry for non citizens/residents unlike Denmark, Finland and Norway.
I work for a Swedish company and some of my colleagues think the virus is a lot of fuss over nothing and it will be over by Easter, others expect a catastrophe if nothing in Sweden changes.

          • Kev 85 says:

“ some of my colleagues think the virus is a lot of fuss over nothing”

Presumably they work in the medical field? If not, I’m not sure what this is based on (I’m not pointing the finger at you obvs.)

          • Jake says:

Another 864 died in Spain today. If 4 737’s crashed everyday fully loaded with passengers, every day, you would be damn sure that people would think twice about travelling. I guess the nature of some people is to not give a monkeys until it arrives on their own doorstep. Sadly their actions effect everyone else in this.

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

Surprised more people aren’t heading to Stockholm??? 😮 😮
        “Stay at home
Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home)”

Nope, didn’t see travel to airport ready for Scandinavian bar-crawl on that list…

        • Rob says:

Pretty sure if I was sitting in a 30 square metre studio flat in London with no outside space I’d be thinking about it!

          • Jake says:

Luckily not everybody thinks the way that you do then isn’t it, or thousands more would die.

          • Rob says:

I’m not thinking about it, but I don’t live in a 30 square metre studio flat ….

          • Kev 85 says:

I’ve pretty much stuck in my bedroom for two weeks as someone I live with is “at risk”. I’m certainly not thinking about going to Sweden or anywhere else.

          • Jake says:

Well that’s lucky for everyone then that you’re not cooped up. I don’t know how all those people in small flats are coping with only being able to go to the park, instead of flying off to Sweden.

  • tomdoyle says:

No email about bringing my own food, was only served half a cold sandwich, small flapjack, mini kitkat, 2 butter biscuits and bottle of water as a main meal, and upon landing half a cold sandwich, small chocolate and water. LHR – SIN.

    • Crafty says:

Ouch. Hope you had something with you. I hate being hungry and trapped on a plane unable to do anything about it.

  • Emma Knight says:

We were due to fly from LGW to AGP on 11th May. Whilst we were quite sure the flight would probably be cancelled with this escalating situation, I have just logged onto my Exec club account and our flight has completely disappeared from my bookings. No email to advise, no offer of credit or refund, just gone? I can’t use the booking ref to find it either? I don’t hold out much hope of getting someone on the phone right now. Credit Card charge back?

    • Anna says:

You’ve got a few weeks yet so I would hold on a few days and see what happens, it could just be down to the airport change at the moment. Make sure you have your confirmation email with your booking ref and ticket numbers on.

  • hari says:

this is not fair. Minimum food option to be ensured for passangers. especially in long haul food is an essential service not luxury.
    ba need to consider this.

    • Qwertyknowsbest says:

Get real, this is an unprecedented situation. Flying people home and to destinations that they have relevent and urgent business is the priority without risking health of crews. If you have time to worry about dining rather than eating, you don’t have a problem.

  • Alan says:

Sorry, I’m a bit confused, BA has moved out of LHR T3, is that a permanent decision, or after virus crisis, certain routes will move back to T3?
Otherwise no more nice lounge like CX & QF.

    • Rob says:

They will be back when they need the space, but it could well be 6 months or so after they resume a broad flying programme.
