The new HFP chat thread – Friday 3rd April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Hi, I need to pay a carpenter around £6k in a couple of weeks or so.
Won’t take Amex. But will take other cards.

I currently only have a BAPP and a free IHG card, but am happy to apply for something else.
What would be the most effective way of earning some points from this transaction? I presume I can’t use the Amex in the background with Curve, Revolut etc
Would a IHG premium card be best? something else?

    • Anna says:

Bill hop? They might give you a discount on the fee in the current climate. However, I think this would mean you don’t have S75 protection if he goes bust. But you can possibly get round that by paying £100 (?) on a credit card. Otherwise it depends which points you collect, I would go with IHG if it was me.

      • Aston says:

        Thank you.
Will likely go for IHG premium.

      • Polly says:

Bill hop won’t budge on the fee atm, which did surprise me somewhat. Was going to to pay the kitchen guy that way. Girl sounded quite incredulous that l even asked! So used PayPal instead. Yes, be sure to pay £100 on the credit card as Anna says.

    • Polly says:

We just paid our kitchen fix guy by PayPal using our Amex. Worked fine. He had a private email address, so he became a really close friend that day. Payment went through fine. No fees.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Anyone received Hilton points from last weekends VA transfers yet?

    • Chef says:

      My 120k didn’t arrive

    • Alan W says:

Nor mine. Answered the follow up email they annoyingly sent yesterday wanting more identification details. Hope that doesn’t mean another 30 day wait from now.

  • Crafty says:

Has anyone actually had a cash refund for a Hilton advance purchase cancelled under the COVID-19 rules? Mine was confirmed on 14 March and still no sign.

    • Peter K says:

Was told similar time it would be 3-4 weeks to process.

    • Gavin says:

I got a refund after contacting the hotel directly, arrived on my card within 2 days.

    • memesweeper says:

Yup – mine came thru next day

  • The Original Nick says:

So, Eurostar have now changed their Covid-19 refunds of evouchers only for travel up to 1st June. Does anyone knw if I can get a full refund in cash instead? I paid with my Amex Platinum Card. Booked in January for travel Mid May.

    • Rob says:

EU261 also covers trains and buses AFAIK so cash should be an option. Have a dig and check.

      • meta says:

@ Rob, yes Eurostar is clearly here not following EU rules. They should be called out!

    • meta says:

You’re not reading it properly. They will give you a voucher which you need to use until 30 Sep for travel till the end of March next year. They just extended the period from end of April to end of May.

Has your train been cancelled? If not, you can’t dispute or ask for chargeback. You can claim on Amex Plat insurance, but only if your train falls within current FCO advisory period of 30 days (which will probably be extended).

I have a booking for end of May and I’ll wait till they cancel it then dispute.
