The new HFP chat thread – Friday 3rd April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Datapoint: My trusty Monese account has, in fact, been closed.

      • The Urbanite says:

Monese don’t like MS. They will eventually close accounts but there is an art to getting a decent volume through and not getting funds trapped with them.

        • Pablo says:

My promotional 3 month monese premium plan just expired. Are there any live promo codes around for premium?

      • memesweeper says:

Allegedly they weren’t happen with the documentation they asked for to support a KYC check.

In practice I strongly suspect they don’t like people using paypoint top ups to their maximum extent.

    • Paul says:

I think my Monese account is due to be closed too.

They requested a whole raft of information, employment contract etc via email, and asked how i was using the account. I was concerned about the security angle, and felt what ever answer I gave would be akin to a kangaroo court. Let’s see if they close my account.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Been there, done that and they still closed my account, 3-4 weeks for funds released.

  • Mike P says:

Just had an email from BA entitled ‘Important information about your membership’ My first thought was that BA had finally got round to doing something sensible and proactive about extending peoples’ membership years but no, just the already published information about extending my GUF vouchers for 6 months.

Whilst I accept that BA has done something for those people whose membership year ends in April, May or June (30% reduction in tier points), there will come a stage when a more general blanket policy is put in place.

  • Dave says:

First world problem: I need to move a return part of a 241 booking to a later flight (flight isnt until February). Its not letting me do this online and says I need to call BA. Is it irresonsible to ring them now? I don’t want to lose the availability. Like I say first world problem

    • Spursdebs says:

Phone them. Life got to go on.

      • AndyGWP says:

Agreed. They’ll make £70 from it so sure they’ll be glad for the phone call!

  • Spursdebs says:

I got 10 points for gtech
    18 for Ray Ban
    16 for Hugo Boss
    10 for Farfetch

Although annoyed with Boss they took 6 days to bill me and I lost out on Amex Bonus.

  • AndyK says:

Has anyone tried to book a reward flight with Virgin online and call after to add 241 and get extra miles refunded?

  • mark2 says:

Just received £50 Amazon gift card resulting from Telegraph subscription bought 15 March.

  • Tom says:

If i cancel my Amex Plat which is due to renew in a few weeks where will any subsequent refund go? I have some concert tickets and a flight that were paid for on the card but refunds have not come through yet. If i cancel the card will this bugger up any refunded card purchases? Thanks in Advance!

    • TGLoyalty says:

To your card account. You phone them and tell them where you want it sent.

    • fivebobbill says:

Cancelled my Plat a week ago today and asked them to credit the refund (6 months) to my BAPP.
      Still no sign of it…

      • TGLoyalty says:

You asked at the time or a few days later?

I find you can only request it once it’s hit your account and can take 3-4 days

      • Peter K says:

I’d ask again. I’ve been told in the past they can’t move a balance until it appears on the account IIRC. That would mean that until the card is cancelled and the backroom work done to work out the refund on the yearly fee they can’t see it to credit it to another account. I think the person you spoke to make a mistake.

      • fivebobbill says:

I asked at the time. However after reading this I just logged into my old Platinum account, and hey presto – £236.30!!
I’ll see if I can get them and have it transferred into my current account.
Thanks guys, that was really bugging me!

        • Liz says:

I requested the refund of my SPG card to go to my BAPP last week by online chat and it still hasn’t happened.

          • Polly says:

I asked on live chat, for the BAPP refund to be put against my plat balance, took 4 working days.

  • Subkk says:

    hi guys, first time posting
I used to use Tandem for any spending where my Amex wasn’t accepted, and all spending abroad.
Since that was cancelled, I replaced it with Halifax Clarity for the abroad spending.
Although Clarity is a great card for abroad spending, don’t get any rewards on Clarity for my non-Amex UK spending.
What card would you guys recommend I get to replace Tandem in this regard?

    • Genghis says:

      • Chabuddy geezy says:

Virgin Atlantic card if you think they wont go bankrupt, or the IHG card.

    • Sunguy says:

Just be careful of the Halifax where the Clarity card is concerned – dont get me wrong, its a pretty decent account – there is one major gotcha……

HBOS/Lloyds will wriggle as much as they possibly can to NOT issue you a temporary card – if you have ANY other card with you or ANY traveling companion(friend, work colleague, etc), they will absolutely *NOT* under any circumstances replace your card or send you cash if you lose or have your card stolen abroad. All they will do is post a new card to your home address – though, Apple/Android pay can be available within a few hours (which wasn’t the case a couple of years ago when I had fun!).

Hence, I always travel with Applepay setup on the card and Amex too….
