The new HFP chat thread – Tuesday 7th April

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://www.headforpoints.com/2020/04/07/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-7th-april/comment-page-1 The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Just had an email from Iberia. I have a flight on 20 May MAN-MAD. Am being offered a voucher if I want to cancel, with an extra 10% if I cancel before 15 April. Voucher valid until June 2021. Also being offered a date change.

    • 10% additional to the whole ticket price. Qatar offers 10% but excluding tax and call to book new flight via call centre will cost you £25.

  2. Anyone know how long IHG take to refund a cancelled booking? I cancelled an Advanced saver booking at the Manhattan Crowne Plaza on 18 March (we were meant to be staying there 21-25 April). Not heard anything yet.
I did contact the reward club but got nowhere.
    Thanks

    • Try emailing the hotel directly for an update. I had a similar thing with Intercontinental Istanbul – turned out the refund had to be processed by the hotel, but the finance team was not at work to process the refund due to C-19. They’ve promised it will be processed when they are back in the office.

Try twitter. Their team seem quite on the ball

Is dropping from the plat to the green just for those who would lose their mr points otherwise? I have a gold in its first year. Wasn’t the ARCC pushed as being better??

    • ARCC is better. However, there is (targeted in theory, seems to work for most) 20k upgrade bonus for going from Green to Platinum which you could try to get yourself back to it. We can’t write about it openly because in theory it is targeted but you can google the link.

      • Rahaney says:

        Hi Rob,
Thanks for the response, I’ll pm you,
        Cheers

      • Doug M says:
        • No, because you wouldn’t know that link existed if I hadn’t told you about it or Amex hadn’t emailed you.

          • Doug M says:

So putting it on the website and topping the google search results doesn’t count as a public offer?

          • Take it up with the FCA!

          • No. I very much doubt that, legally, you can argue that. A court would argue that a company cannot be expected to password-protect any webpage which is not meant to be read by the general public.

For example … HFP competitions are illegal in Northern Ireland. If the Northern Ireland Assembly tried to prosecute me (since HFP is accessible in Northern Ireland) a court would almost certainly find that I am not expected to password-protect competition pages on HFP and only release the password to readers who could prove they did not live in Northern Ireland. At most, I would be found to have a duty of care to stop anyone who lives in Northern Ireland from being confirmed as the winner.

Any suggestions please: Have an OTA booking for a hotel which is not part of a large chain and has no CV19 cancellation policy in Hong Kong. Rate is Non- Ref and of course cannot get into HK without quarantine. Supposed to be there in a week but no answer on cancellation from OTA.

Data Point for those waiting VFC transfers to HH. My miles left my VFC account on 25th March and arrived in my HH account today.

  7. MarkF says:

    Hi there.
We’re due to fly with BA to the US on 20/5 in CW using a companion voucher (expires 21/5/20) and have paid for seat selection. BA have emailed offering a voucher to reschedule without penalty but it’s not clear to me what would be included in the voucher (saw on HfP that the voucher has no details or expiry date on it). So my question is what is the best strategy to adopt re the US trip which is highly unlikely to happen as things stand (and what happens to the companion voucher)? At present I’m minded to wait for BA to cancel the flight as I don’t have any travel plans without flights within the 12 month period from 20/5/20 so the voucher doesn’t work for me and I think I’m right in saying that if I choose to cancel then it’ll cost me £35 per person and I’ll lose the £400+ worth of seat fees. Advice would be much appreciated………..

    • David says:

I think you are correct in your assessment – best to wait and see if the flights get cancelled for a full refund, as if you cancel yourself now you will lose those seat fees, and the voucher option has a number of issues that have been discussed at length over the past few weeks.

  8. Baji Nahid says:

Any assistance would be appreciated. Bought some flights to NYC but the travels are on KLM and Delta with a stop in Amsterdam. These tickets however were ticketed by virgin. If for any reason, Virgin folds, does this mean the tickets are gone?

    I appreciate any help!
