Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

American Express Platinum card giving DOUBLE points on all spending until 20th July

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The Platinum Card from American Express is offering double Membership Rewards points – 2 per £1 – on ALL spending until 20th July!

These means that, if you have Amex Platinum, it is now THE most valuable card in your wallet.

I had expected this offer to appear, because it has been offered to Platinum cardholders in other countries.  For some reason no-one has yet been emailed by American Express about it.

It DOES work though, and applies to all transactions from 21st April.

Amex Platinum giving DOUBLE points on ALL spending until 20th July!

Does this apply to all Membership Rewards cards?

No.

It only applies to personal American Express Platinum cards.  If you have the International Dollar / Euro Platinum Card, it also applies to that.  Centurion cardholders can also take part.

It does NOT apply to Business Platinum or the personal versions of Preferred Rewards Gold, Green or the American Express Rewards Credit Card.

How many miles and points will I now earn?

Two Membership Rewards points per £1 means you are earning:

2 Avios per £1

2 Virgin Flying Club miles per £1

4 Hilton Honors points per £1

6 Radisson Rewards points per £1

3 Marriott Bonvoy points per £1

….. and much more.

The full list of Membership Rewards airline partners is here and the full list of hotel partners is here.

Or get 1.8% cashback instead

Alternatively, you can take 1.8% cashback instead.

As we wrote the other day, Amex Platinum cardholders now receive 0.9p per Membership Rewards points when they redeem for statement credit.

This means that, as you are now earning 2 Membership Rewards points per £1, you could immediately redeem these for 1.8% off your bill.

Is it worth getting American Express Platinum to take advantage of this deal?

I will do a separate article on this topic over the weekend.  The issue is that, whilst the rewards are clearly excellent now, you won’t be able to benefit from most of the travel benefits which come with the card.

  • Down the Back says:

I currently have the BA Amex (the 1 with the 2 for 1 that lasts 2 years), I have no other Amex cards, would I get any sign up bonus for taking the Platinum out now ?

    Thanks
    DtB

  • MD says:

Unbelievable. I rang up and cancelled on Tuesday and they made no mention of this! I specifically stated that, whilst saving the fee as I couldn’t use the travel benefits for months was one motivation, the main reason was that the earning rate was the joint lowest of any of their cards and there was simply no incentive to spend on it. Would have been enticed to keep it if the lady had offered bonus points or an increased earning rate (as everyone else in the world seems to be getting) but no, she couldn’t get me off the phone fast enough! Which other card do you want the fee returned to? Okay, thanks, done, bye.

    Unbelievable.

    • BuyEMLocalBonds says:

You need to speak with someone based in the call centres abroad, the old ladies in Brighton are never helpful or generous, very by the book. No flexibility etc

    • the_real_a says:

But do you guys just wait to be offered? ASK for what you want. “I will keep the card for a double points retention bonus for 3 months…” Just keep on asking when they go on a spiel. I have never been refused in the end.

The Philippines call center couldn’t give a d*** – i mean is much more accommodating to polite suggestions of how they can close the call with a positive review at the end of it.

      • MD says:

I asked. Was point blank refused. But as our curiously named friend suggests, that was maybe because it was a Brighton-based staff member during the day. Will try to get one of the overseas call centres next time, lesson learned.

  • Dubs says:

Rob is this in addition to those whom have had a 3 month double points retention offer and deferred it to later on in the year (I.e. 3 months of double points now and 3 months later on) or just until july across the board ?

  • tony says:

Is this not just an incredibly smart ruse by AMEX to make a boat load as all the travel refunds come in over the coming months?

  • Andrew says:

Refunds are still coming back as 1x points. Presumably if you have a refund for a transaction during the double points period, that will refund at 2x points though.

  • Nick says:

Rob, do we know if anything else is likely to follow as a ‘please keep your card’ offer, or is this (and the cash reward) the total?

  • onlysuites says:

They should have offered it on the Business Platinum too!

  • Richard says:

In Germany for the Amex platinum card they give you just over 40,000k points as compensation when you call up and complain you cant use any of the travel benefits. Found out about it from the german equivalent of hotukdeals

    • J says:

If correct that’s a huge bonus. But there are not big sign up bonuses in Germany. I’d also expect the number of Amex Platinum holders in Germany is tiny vs the UK. Amex is pretty niche credit card acceptance here is not great, let alone Amex.

      • Richard says:

Absolutely. I’m not complaining as it worked for me 🙂 The sign up bonus was 50,000 for me. It’s true that Amex is much less widely accepted here. We also get the double points offer and the half points payment of your bill.

        • J says:

Nice one! Yes especially in Berlin an Amex isn’t much use and would get some funny looks… I have a Eurowings card but not much use for that now, so mostly using Curve with Hilton.

      • Lady London says:

Seen 60,000 in Germany for sign-up.

        • Concerto says:

100,000 in Switzerland for signup. They actually offered me 115,000 if I signed up on the spot. Wish I had done so.
