GOOD NEWS: IHG Rewards Club is extending your hotel elite status to January 2022

IHG Rewards Club has finally seen the light and is joining Hilton and Marriott in extending your elite status automatically by 12 months.

Your elite status will automatically be carried over for the whole of 2021 and your benefits will carry on until January 2022 when the annual status reset happens.

Even better news for Spire Elite members

The news is even better for top tier Spire Elite members.  (The full list of IHG Rewards Club tiers and tier benefits is here.)

IHG Rewards Club extends elite status to 2021

You will automatically receive ANOTHER ‘choice’ benefit allowing you to claim either 25,000 free IHG Rewards Club points or gift Platinum Elite status to a friend.

Please note that this is not active now.  It will take IHG a few weeks to extend memberships and, for Spire Elite members, attach the new ‘choice’ benefit to your account.

Ambassador free night vouchers are also extended

If you have InterContinental Ambassador status, your weekend free night voucher has been extended by three months.

This only applies to members on the books as of 15th March 2020.

IHG had already announced that it was extending Ambassador memberships by three months but had been refusing to budge on the free night vouchers.

IHG is still reducing the elite status criteria for 2021

If you don’t have IHG Rewards Club status at the moment, or want to move up a level, IHG Rewards Club is still keeping its lowered thresholds in place.

Take a look at this chart (click here to see the original):

IHG Rewards Club extends elite status to 2021

Spire Elite is cut from 75,000 base points to 55,000 base points, or from 75 nights to 55 nights.

Given that you will receive the 25,000 points ‘elite choice’ benefit for achieving Spire Elite, it is worth pushing for if you are getting close.

Full details of these changes are on the official IHG travel advisory page, which is here.

Just as a data point – my IHG free night certificate from CC spending hit my account today… expiry Nov 2021 – 18 months as promised. (It also shows in the IHG app – not sure if this is a new feature?)

    • JImbob says:

How long did you have to wait from the anniversary of your credit card to get the free voucher? My anniversary was the end of February , but no sign yet of my free night voucher. Not sure whether to chase or give it longer?

      • H says:

My anniversary was 8 April and I got my voucher yesterday

      • Nick M says:

This month’s statement (with the annual fee) and the certificate were both generated yesterday… not sure when my year starts but I would chase if your year started in Feb. I didn’t think I received my certificate until a bit later last year though – so perhaps they do them in batches?

        • Kevin says:

Recheck again tonight and it showed the expired date has just been extended For 18months now vs 12 months last night 🙂

    • Kevin says:

Nick, where IHG indicated a new free night voucher last for 18months?
I got my last month and only last 12 months.

      • Nick M says:

Within the IHG app, click on profile and it shows your number, available points and free night certificates. Click on the free night certificate and it shows you the certificates you have – under here mine says “booking dates April 22 2020 – November 8 2021”

  • onlysuites says:

My points are still showing as expiring next month. I thought they were going to extend them for everyone? Do I need to email them?

    • Rob says:

They said they were. Is it not on the advisory page?

    • ChrisC says:

Just wait a couple of weeks to give them chance to sort the IT out

      Patience is a virtue.

  • berneslai says:

Slightly OT: When booking IHG points and money rates, where the refund is only in points, are the refund rates fixed?

I know this can be an easy way to ‘buy’ IHG points (book a points and money rate and cancel immediately) at a cheaper rate than what IHG sell but is it worth looking for cheap points and money rates across the world or are they all the same?

    • Rob says:

There are some variations, or at least used to be – this was down to IHG trialling different combinations. Not sure if it still exists.

  • E says:

I know this is a stupid question to which I should know the answer…but I can’t find where the expiry date for my IHG account is on the website. Can someone tell me where I should see it? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Sina says:

I had Spire Elite for 90 days and I wasn’t able to achieve the 10 stays required last year and my account was supposed to go back to Platinum Elite, but after the new year it stayed Spire, but still my spire expiry is 31/12/2019?! I have no idea what’s going on? Anyone seen this?

  • happeemonkee says:

They have give me back a free night voucher that expired in March (Had used it for a IC Hong Kong stay for Sep this year but it’s closed for 2 years now). Extended to December 20 now which i’m happy about.

    • Scallder says:

Is this from the Creation CC? I was told they couldn’t extend expired vouchers so they gave me points for the night I should have had. Not the worst result but would have preferred a voucher back as could have used it on a higher price hotel later in the year!

      • happeemonkee says:

No it was IHG who re-instated it after me contacting them via their ambassador email address. They tend to sort thing out quite quick although have been taking a bit longer of late.

        • Alan says:

I was impressed with them this week – two missing 10% AMB rebates, emailed them and sorted within an hour!!

  • Lewis42 says:

Any idea what this means for Royal Ambassadors? When does it expire?

    • hap[peemonkee says:

Mine was supposed to expire 31/03 but the have extended to 1/07

    • ChrisC says:

      RA is individual invitation.

Friend of mine got an email yesterday about his RA and he is happy with what they have done for him.

It would depend on your value to them as to what they will do for you so no hard and fast answers.

  • Bob says:

So, as a spire who earns most points via cc spend, is there any point in earning 55K points this year (to renew Spire), or shall I just wait til next year?

    • Paul Pogba says:

This is what I was thinking… but hotel points are probably safer than airline points.
