British Airways issues a new coronavirus refund policy

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

British Airways has just improved its coronavirus rebooking and refund policy.

This includes extending the window for cancelling existing bookings.

Up until now, only travellers booked on services until 31st May had the option to convert their booking into a voucher.  This has now been extended to all travel until 31st July. You can see the announcement on ba.com here.

The only way to claim a cash refund from British Airways is via the increasingly busy phone lines.  The Head for Points coronavirus refund and cancellation policy article has more details on different booking types.

Avios wing 14

What are my options for a British Airways coronavirus refund?

This is how we see it.

Did you book with cash for a flight departing AFTER 31st July?

If you booked before 3rd March, there is nothing you can do.  You will need to wait a few weeks to see if BA extends its refund policy for travel in August and beyond.

If you booked on or after 3rd March, you can rebook your ticket for another date between now and the end of 2020.  However, you must pay any fare difference.

Did you book with cash for a flight departing BEFORE 31st July?

Is your flight still operating and you are due to travel in the next few days?

If your flight is not cancelled and you are travelling very soon, you have no choice.  You must either travel or take a British Airways voucher.  Cash refunds are not available for flights which are operating.

Is your flight still operating but it is for travel in a few weeks or months time?

If this is you, you have two options:

You can – today – accept the British Airways travel voucher, or

You can wait until nearer the date of departure to see if BA does cancel your flight.  If it does, you are entitled to call up and request a cash refund.

Is your flight already cancelled?

You have two options:

You can accept the British Airways travel voucher via the BA website, or

You can ring British Airways and ask for a cash refund

Did you book with Avios?

If you booked with Avios, here are your options:

Is your flight operating, and departing BEFORE OR ON 31st July?

If so …..

You can accept the British Airways travel voucher via the BA website or

You can ring British Airways and ask for a cash and Avios refund, paying the £35 per person cancellation fee, or

You can wait to see if your flight gets cancelled, which will save you the £35 per person cancellation fee

Is your flight operating, and departing AFTER 31st July?

If so …..

You can ring British Airways and ask for a cash and Avios refund, paying the £35 per person cancellation fee, or

You can wait to see if your flight gets cancelled, which will save you the £35 per person cancellation fee

Is your flight cancelled?

You have two options:

You can accept the British Airways travel voucher via the BA website (no fees apply) or

You can ring British Airways and ask for a cash and Avios refund (no fees apply)

British Airways changes coronavirus flight refund policy

Does my voucher guarantee me a flight for the same price?

No.

You need to be very clear about this.  The British Airways refund vouchers do NOT guarantee you a flight to the same destination for the same price.  It is simply a cash and/or Avios voucher to be spend how you wish.

If you had booked a £300 flight to New York but decide to rebook for a date where tickets are £500, you will need to pay the additional £200 on top.

Are the British Airways flight refund vouchers transferable?

No.

The person who receives the voucher must be a passenger on the rebooked flight.

Does it make any difference if you paid with Avios and/or a 2-4-1 voucher?

Yes.

If your booking contained Avios and/or a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher, you do NOT get the Avios and voucher redeposited in your British Airways Executive Club account.

Instead, the Avios and 2-4-1 voucher are rolled up into the voucher, along with your cash.

We have reports of people who have tried to rebook a 2-4-1 ticket being refused unless their flight was to the same Avios zone.  It is not clear if this is policy or just confused agents at the call centre.

Whatever the rules, trying to mix Avios, a 2-4-1 voucher and cash into a new booking is going to be messy.  Using a voucher from a cash booking is obviously far easier.

Edit: anecdotal evidence in the comments suggests that the 2-4-1 voucher will be valid as long as the voucher as a whole, ie. until April 2022.

What happens to the expiry date on my BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher?

The voucher you receive if you cancel your flight and accept a voucher is valid until 30th April 2022.

However, what happens if your voucher includes a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher which expires before 30th April 2022 (as virtually all of them will)?

Does your BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher get extended to 30th April 2022?  Or is your travel voucher actually going to partially expire early?  We can’t get an answer to this question.

British Airways coronavirus flight refund policy

All existing coronavirus cash refund vouchers are extended

British Airways is also extending existing refund vouchers. Under the previous policy all travel had to be completed within 12 months of your original dates. All new and existing vouchers can now be used up until 30th April 2022, mirroring Virgin Atlantic’s generous voucher scheme.

(The original 12 month rule was unfair because you had to fly back before the expiry date, not just travel out.  This meant that anyone who had booked for Easter 2020 could not use their voucher for Easter 2021.)

As noted above, it isn’t clear what happens to BA Amex 2-4-1 vouchers which are embedded in vouchers but are due to expire before 30th April 2022.

Remember that vouchers can only be used by ringing up to book.  They are not valid online.  This may change but you shouldn’t bet on it.

British Airways Holidays bookings

British Airways has also recently changed the payment schedule for BA Holidays bookings. If you have a a flight + hotel or car booking then you now only need pay the balance due 3 weeks before departure. If you have a medium term booking (eg. July, August, September) then it is best to wait and see how the travel situation evolves.

Is the new British Airways coronavirus refund policy an improvement?

Whilst British Airways still appears to be trying its best to prevent people from getting cash refunds, the new voucher policy is a necessary improvement on the previous offerings which were exceptionally poor when compared to other airlines.

If you have a voucher it should now be much more useful although, of course, you are still on the hook for any fare difference when you rebook.

  • Lloyd says:

I can answer regarding rebooking with a 2-4-1 BA PP voucher. The 241 voucher used in my original booking was due to expire May 2021. I am able to book any date up to the date of the validity of the extended voucher i.e. November 2021. Only the outbound has to take place by that date. All dates thereafter are greyed out.

Also only able to rebook online where the avios booking is ‘like for like’ (in my case off peak). States that for peak bookings I need to call a service centre and pay the difference.

    • HarryB. says:

Thanks Lloyd, that’s a really valuable comment.

    • Lloyd says:

Also, a few dates seem to be blocked out but most are available. I’m pretty sure that you don’t just need there to be redemption availability, as long as there is availability in the same cabin that is good enough. In my case my 241 is to Sydney in First, so am pretty safe in saying that the dates being opened up are more than just standard redemption availability!

      • AJA says:

If so that is a change from the usual rules. I thought to use a voucher that contained a 2-4-1 or Avios reward booking you could only use it for a booking at a future date that had reward availability. Normally the only time period where you can book any seat regardless of award availability is beteen -3 to +14 days of the original booking.

        • Lloyd says:

I believe the new guidance issued this morning has removed that requirement for the -3/+14 days.

          • Sean says:

That seems a little unusual – i can book now on a flight with avios 2-4-1 availability in peak season, hope its cancelled then have free reign for 2 years?

      • Umba says:

Would you be willing to share a screenshot of what you’re seeing Lloyd? Many thanks…..

    • Umba says:

I’m probably missing something but assume to have a 2-4-1 voucher with expiry of May 2021 it had already been subject to the system wide 6 month extension?

      • Rob says:

Yes. If you look on ba.com it will show when your voucher was issued and when it expires so you can clearly see the 30 months.

        • Umba says:

Thanks Rob and Lloyd for the original comment, I follow that but from what Lloyd has written the voucher is now valid ’til Nov 21 which is an additional 6 months so 36 months total validity.

In addition, Lloyd also appears to be saying that you don’t need there to be Reward Availability when rebooking.

This seems too good to be true.

On 06/03 when BA were showing loads of availability to many rocking horse poo destinations, I booked two seats in First for a long weekend in Tokyo for mid June 2020 with Avios and a BAPP 2-4-1 which had an original expiry of Jan 21 (which would become July 21 with the system wide 6 month extension). Clearly this now seems foolhardy but it seemed like a good idea at the time!

From what Lloyd has said I could exchange for a voucher and probably pick up 2 First seats to Tokyo for a date in the future and not need redemption availability. Astonishing.

          • babyg says:

I tried to do this with LHR-SYD in first – I was originally flying May 25th – i asked if i could move this to December, they said no as there is no LHR-SYD in first for rewards bookings.

          • Rob says:

Lloyd is wrong. You are making a fresh Avios booking and so require availability.

          • Lloyd says:

            In My Vouchers:
            Voucher Issued 8th May 2019.
            Voucher used 29th June 2019.
Voucher expired 8th November 2021 (original expiry 8th May 2021 – therefore six month extension even though used).

Flight booked LHR to SYD 2nd June 2020 – 270k avios using 241 and fees/tax.

Under change booking tab it states:
Remember that under the terms of your BA American Express Companion Voucher, all outbound flight(s) in your booking must start no later than Monday, 8 November 2021.

One of the options states: I want to change the date of this flight to not later than Monday, 8 November 2021. Option to then select travel date.

Bearing in mind this is a Sydney redemption the following dates are available:
            June (all dates except 12th, 14th, 20th and 26th)
            July (4th – 10th, 26th)
            August (2nd, 6th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd, 27th)
            September (12th – 30th)
            October (1st – 31st)
            November (1st – 30th)
            December (1st – 31st)
            January 2021 (1st – 31st)
            February 2021 (1st – 28th)
            March 2021 (1st – 31st)
            April 2021 (1st – 30th)
May 2021 (1st – Cant see availability beyond this date, presumably as more than 355 days out?)
I’m not able to book all of the dates above as described above only off-peak I am able to book online, but it shows the peak dates too.

Your flight is currently on an off-peak date, which you can: change to another off-peak date,
change to a peak date by contacting your local Service Centre.

Rob – I assumed I’m correct that it doesn’t require reward availability simply as I’ve never seen Sydney open 2 x F seats as widely as the above. So what I’m assuming you are saying is that the availability in F above is actually standard reward inventory for the route?

        • Lloyd says:

Just testing my theory out. Just gone on BA Redemption Finder and looked for two F tickets. No availability from 24th August – end of April 2021.

Assuming BA Redemption Finder is reasonably accurate (I know its not perfect), it would suggest I’m being given access to further availability than is normally available if I were to make a fresh booking.

          • Rob says:

            Seems so – interesting!

          • Daniel says:

Yes, BA have changed their original stance of same fare bucket being required and give flexibility outside the usual 14 day rebook period now where usually any fare bucket can be used is restricted.

          • Umba says:

Lloyd, Thanks for the full and comprehensive update. It’s very interesting and insightful.

  • mr_jetlag says:

Here’s a new wrinkle. I have an OnBusiness booking to Billund for June which is now cancelled. Been unable to reach Ob as I think alln lines have been merged to the main one. What value vouchers do ppl think I should ask for? Points would expire so am thinking of going the voucher route for this one.

    • AJA says:

I think I’d take the voucher in your circumstances.

    • sixcolours says:

I had a flight booked with OB points which was cancelled. Called up, OB points redeposited and they extended them to December this year — the points had already expired so this is very useful.
I called the OB support line to do this.

    • Rob says:

OB points are reinstated with a 12/20 expiry date.

    • Daniel says:

You need to call OB, the lines are not merged. If your points have already expired when they refund back they will extend the expiry on them. I am speaking from first hand experience here.

  • JR says:

Any guidance for people who are in the middle of their trip? I have an NY to London CW booking (outbound already flown), and I’d rather just get 1/2 the value in the form of a voucher. BA said no, and the only thing I could do was date change… When I was chasing status that was fine, but now since I no longer need to I’d rather just have the voucher.

    • Charlieface says:

Cancelled flight they must pay a refund if asked under EC261. If they refuse then chargeback or S75

    • ChrisC says:

You are not getting half refunded

That’s not how ticket prices – and refunds- are calculated

  • AJA says:

“it isn’t clear what happens to BA Amex 2-4-1 vouchers which are embedded in vouchers but are due to expire before 30th April 2022.”

From what is being posted on FT it seems that the voucher is valid until 30 April 2022 regardless. This means if you take a voucher containing your Avios and the 2-4-1 voucher it will be valid until 30 April 2022. That makes the e-voucher considerably more attractive if your 2-4-1 is due to expire any date before 30 April 2022.

    • Lloyd says:

Agree. It looks like if you want a voucher it is available until April 2022 even if booked with a 241. I thought the downside though is that any rebooking would require standard redemption availability?

However, if you want to rebook instead of the voucher, you are stuck with the original voucher expiry + 6 months, but can redeem against any available seat and not just the standard redemption availability?

If the above is correct, I guess the best option comes down to when you want to travel and whether it is a route that traditionally have limited avios redemption availability? Clearly in my case a F redemption to Sydney I would be slightly mad to go for the voucher in those circumstances. But if I was not bothered when I travel and wanted to use my 241 to a Zone 1 redemption then the former option is probably the better route as it gives me further time to redeem?

  • Upperdeckplease says:

I have two separate bookings for the same trip; a BA Amex 241 in FIRST to Barbados end of June, and a BA holidays booking for a hotel for the same dates. I paid in full for the hotel at the time of booking. There appear to be no F availability if I look on Reward Flight finder, but it says in Lloyd’s comments (above) that BA seem to find you availability. Anyone help me with how I might go about making that happen?

    • Anna says:

It’s not clear what you’re trying to do here, move your booking or cancel and get the voucher to use at a later date? If the latter you would have to wait and see if BA release any seats.

      • Upperdeckplease says:

Thanks, Anna, I’m ideally hoping to move my hotel and flight, but there is no availability showing for redemption flights in First or even Club

  • PaulC says:

Anyone any experience of Lloyds Upgrade Vouchers yet? I’m not due to travel on mine until New Years Eve but who knows how long this will go on for. My voucher expired end of January this year for reference.

    • Brian W says:

I had to raise an official complaint with Lloyd’s last week as they have failed to issue the final 241 voucher I was due from my Premier Duo cards being changed to the Avios Rewards card last summer. I had until my anniversary to earn it and my anniversary statements shows I’d spent twice the required amount but no voucher. Hopefully they end up dishing out compo again like they have had to do to many others with their own errors.

    • Daniel says:

Lloyds Voucher will be credited back to use with a book by date of Sep 2020 for travel up to Sep 2021.

  • Scallder says:

Quick tip – I’ve had to call up BA twice now following different flight cancellations and got through in 5 mins last week and straight through to someone yesterday by calling the US number: (+1) 877-767-7970

So for those who can dial internationally for free (work Skype coming in handy personally!), definitely worth a try!

  • ChrisC says:

Does used mean book by April 2022 (for flights after) or having flown by April 2022 and if flown does that mean out and back or can you fly out in April 2022 and back in May 2022?

    • ChrisC says:

just answered by own question by cancelling a flight on BA.com

“Your new trip booked with your voucher must be fully completed by 30 April 2022 (departure and return).”
