As we trailed last week, Marriott Bonvoy has launched a ‘buy points’ deal – and it is the most generous deal they have ever run.

Via this page of the website, you will get a 60% bonus on all points purchases until 30th June.

Of course, as Marriott Bonvoy has only been running for a couple of years in its current form, saying this is ‘the best ever offer’ doesn’t mean so much.  However, it IS better than all other recent deals.  These have either offered a 50% bonus or a 30% discount, which are effectively the same thing.

Do I qualify to buy points at a discount?

There are two restrictions on using this offer.  Your Marriott Bonvoy account must be either:

90 days old, or

30 days old if it has some activity on it

Because this offer runs for more than 30 days, non-members could still qualify.  You could open a Marriott Bonvoy account now, transfer a handful of American Express Membership Rewards points across and then buy in 30 days time.

How many Marriott Bonvoy points can I buy?

The annual purchase cap of 50,000 points pre-bonus has been doubled to 100,000 points although the maximum you can buy in one go remains 50,000 points pre-bonus.  With the bonus, you could pick up 160,000 Bonvoy points although it would require two separate transactions of 80,000 each.

At the top end you are paying $625 (£487) for 80,000 points under this offer.

What is a Marriott Bonvoy point worth?

My rule of thumb is that a Marriott Bonvoy point is worth 0.5p.  You are paying a little more than that (0.60p) under this offer so it isn’t a steal.

However, you might find it worthwhile if:

you are planning a stay at a property where you know you will get outsized value (and it really isn’t that hard to get more 0.6p if you are travelling to peak cities at peak times), or

you are topping off your account before making a points booking, or

you are close to 60,000 Bonvoy points and want to make a transfer into airline miles (you get a bonus of 5,000 airline miles when you transfer 60,000 Bonvoy points into 20,000 airline miles)

The snag with Marriott Bonvoy is that the annual points buying cap is too low to allow you to exploit the deal.  The St Regis New York, for example, can easily run to $1,300 per night including taxes, which makes 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (on a ‘Standard Reward’ day) a great deal.  The problem is getting enough points.  Even with the increased cap, the most you could buy from scratch is 160,000 points which doesn’t even get you two nights.

However …. you CAN transfer up to 100,000 Bonvoy points per year from one member to another.  You need to ring up to do this, which is a bit annoying, but that is the only restriction.  You don’t need to share an address.  This is one way around the limit on points purchases.

Buying Marriott Bonvoy points is a way of buying cheap airline miles

Because you can buy 60,000 points in one go, this deal is also a way of picking up 25,000 airline miles in programmes where you can rarely buy them cheaply.

The usual transfer rate from Marriott Bonvoy into airline miles is 3:1, which is already generous.  If you transfer 60,000 Bonvoy points at once, however, you get 5,000 bonus airline miles which means a total of 25,000 miles.

Do NOT do this with Avios, because there are regular offers to buy Avios for 1p – 1.1p.  However, it might make sense for other airlines.

Buying 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points under this offer will cost $475 (£370).  If you turned this into 25,000 airline miles, you are paying 1.48p per mile.  With SOME airline schemes, you might find this valuable, especially if it is a scheme where you find it very hard to earn miles in the UK.

The link to buy Bonvoy points with a 60% bonus is here if you are interested.  The offer runs to 30th June.

For me the problem is always the valuation against cash prices. If the cash price is high then I’m unlikely to pay it, I’ll stay somewhere else. I really can’t see the gain in buying points without a very specific immediate use in mind, buying on spec always seems a bad deal. Having said that I did once pay £225 for 90K Avios.

    • Genghis says:

🙂 me too. That was a great offer.

      • meta says:

I got in early so paid only £150 for that one, plus then some flights got cancelled and I got half back. That was the deal of the 2010s!

  • babyg says:

Hmmm 355,000 points to stay @ the North Island in the Seychelles, so about $2900 on this points deal, which is under half price 🙂

    • Anna says:

Is that the one where you have to pay hundreds of euros for the transfer though? That puts me off somewhat, especially as they can put up the price whenever they feel like it!

      • babyg says:

        800ish… its a helicopter transfer 🙂

        • Anna says:

It brings out my northern “How much?!” reaction. Our £300 taxi fare from MAN to LHR last year (paid for by BA) made many a Lancastrian jaw drop 😂. I’m sure there are resorts which are just as nice which you can get to from the airport for a lot less!

  • Mises Garson says:

This 60% bonus on Bonvoy is no saving unless
cost of hotel is $700 or more per night.
I tried it on 3 nights Early September in Tel Aviv (50000 points) and Athens(60000 points).
Most business users will not be able to benefit, and he is the boss.

    • babyg says:

W Hotel Abu Dhabi for F1 weekend is a great use of purchased points (120k points = $5000 redemption value), as are the Marriott Moments to buy things err money cant buy (e.g. watching the race from the Mercedes super yacht), but yes hotel booking seem weak value even @ 60% unless the hotel is $$$$ as you said.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I can understand when people say I wouldn’t pay 5k but at the same time you will never get an experience like that at any other hotel so it’s pay the points or the cash value. I’d much rather use points.

        • Harry T says:

Agreed, @TGLoyalty. One of the values of points is to pay for an experience you would never be able to afford or access anyway.

@babyg good point about the Marriott Moments – I should keep an eye out for race weekend.

          • babyg says:

@Harry T, race likely to be Dec 12/13, been speaking with W, and they are looking to move my booking once the race date is confirmed, there are no Marriott moments for yacht action etc, hopefully they return. My understanding is Marriott moments and Hilton experiences are for pairs of tickets, so if you wanted to team up and look at sharing pair you let me know. Email is babyg_wc aaatttt yahoo.com

          • Harry T says:

            @babyg
Thanks, I’ve also seen that it’s likely to be Dec 12/13th – booked a BA 241 on this basis. W Abu Dhabi have been great – also offering to move my stay.

Thanks for the offer of sharing – my girlfriend might be sad if I don’t get her one though :). Appreciate the thought though. Hopefully we can all have a beer on the party yacht!

          • Matthew says:

You won’t be disappointed….the yacht was phenomenal. 40,000 points for grandstand tickets and 12 hours access to the yacht, which was positioned on the corner where the cars go under the hotel. Also, free flowing drinks and food plus a DJ on the top deck – WOW! Oh the memories….

  • babyg says:

    @HarryT – a girl that likes watching f1 – should probably put a ring on it….

I’m flying economy out and business back on points (LHR-AUH – did economy to keep taxes low), that said i am looking to change the points booking to a cash booking + upgrade booking as prem economy prices pretty low!

Hmm hope we dont get into a bidding war. Either way might see you out there if travel restrictions etc have relaxed by then.

    • Harry T says:

@babyg – ha I’ll tell her you said that!

We went for First because we’ve never tried it and the taxes were the same as Business. Hopefully it won’t disappoint!

I hope we don’t end up competing, and I hope you manage to get those upgrades with Avios booked in. There was still business redemption availability last time I checked.

      • Harry T says:

Yes, do hope to see you there if travel is back to normalish by then!

        • TGLoyalty says:

When are you flying back Harry?

          • babyg says:

@TGLoyalty – I’m guessing the they are flying on the 9th and 15th based on the off peak firsts being hovered up

          • Harry T says:

Flying out on the 10th, back on the 15th. That’s the plan anyway! I have an exam in London on the 9th so can’t leave earlier than the 10th.

      • babyg says:

There is normally more than 1 pair of tickets… plus hilton experiences as well…

        • Matthew says:

Indeed – I did both! The packages only appear about 2-3 weeks before the race though. I was checking the sites every day as the yacht access buy-it-now deals got hoovered up in about 12 hours. The Hilton paddock club deal was an auction and I’d recommend going for the Friday as you get much better access in the garage and pit lane, plus a lot less points. Think I paid about 240,000 Hilton points for paddock club and garage access on the Fri, plus 2 nights in Hotel which we didn’t use as we had already booked the W. We were so lucky to win the auction as I only had 242,000 Hilton points and its one of those annoying extended ending auctions when someone bids in last 5mins!

          • babyg says:

@Matthew -great info, thanks, i too was looking at paddock club for Friday – hopefully points, – i did paddock club at silverstone which was amazing! In Abu Dhabi which days to get you get yacht access, and what was the yacht experience like, e.g. which part of the circuit could you see, who did you meet etc etc! ?

          • Matthew says:

Yacht access was available on the Fri/Sat/Sun bundled with grandstand tickets for 30k/40k/70k points respectively. It was only meant to be brunch and then off but they changed it whilst there to give us unlimited access. There is obvs no guarantee that will happen again but it wasn’t that busy so they wanted us to enjoy it. Prob the best points redemption I have ever made. The yacht was parked up opposite the corner that went under the hotel, so fabulous view. It was an incredible experience – unlimited nibbles and drinks for the whole time. Lounge on the top deck whilst DJ was pumping out some tunes watching the action and the world go by. We met some great people, other HFP guys who were great to have a laugh with. There were some Mercedes guys who cam to the yacht to do talks about the racing which was interesting. Previous years had a meet & greet with Lewis but not this time! The Hilton paddock was fab and the hosts amazing. You are truly looked after and get to experience the garage and get given close access to the cars. Meet the drivers and again unlimited hospitality. We even got invited back to the paddock on the Sat for free which was an amazing gesture. The only ‘complaint’ and I say that lightly was that it was very much a party atmosphere which meant loud music until the early hours! But we just accepted it and were away from the kids for the weekend so it didn’t matter!! Fingers crossed it all goes ahead and you have an amazing time. We got showered with gifts from both Marriott, Hilton and the W hotel too. Came home with something like 11 caps, 2 polos, 1 signed by Mercedes team, soft shell jacket, 2 metal water bottles, chocolates…the list goes on. It was hardwork fitting it all in the case! However, the most valuable redemption ever was the ultimate hilton package that went for about 1million points. A lot I know, but they got 3 days paddock passes, a number of tours including during, a hot laps session, 5 nights hotels and a chauffeur for the whole time. WOW!

  • babyg says:

@matthew, many thanks for taking the time for that post! That has really got my hopes up! I really hope it goes ahead and there are Marriott moments/hilton experiences etc! Your weekend (including the party atmosphere) sounds like a dream, fingers crossed! I have done paddock club at silverstone, and we stayed in the shipping container hotels inside the track for the weekend, but there was relatively limited night activities, i am looking forward to all the W and super yacht experiences I can get into. PS im sure Lewis missed seeing you the 2nd time around too.
    Thanks again!

    • Matthew says:

You’re welcome :-). Fingers crossed you get to go and have a fab time.
