The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 20th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here:  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

Still waiting for my Heathrow Rewards Avios

  • Paul says:

I cancelled a stay due on 17/5 for the Doubletree in Tower Bridge direct with the hotel about 3 weeks ago and still no sign of a refund (HH App showed cancel same day) should I chase or are these taking 4 weeks to be repaid?

    • Craig says:

I gave up at the 8 week point and disputed the charge with Amex who refunded me. I was told by the hotel (London based) I might have to wait until August for a refund.

  • Charlotte Dexter says:

Please repost link to BAs rules re tickets purchased with AVIOS, BA now cancels flight. Need to rebook and complete by date of original purchase (correct?) but BA will give you ANY seat in Economy not just an AVIOS seat. I want to take a screen grab of the rules and keep the link.

  • Nick says:

In a desperate attempt to stop customers taking refunds, customers are now being offered the option of taking Avios instead. No fixed ‘exchange rate’ but a sliding scale that increases with higher value transactions. Customers calling in are to be told it’s ‘great value’ because it’s ‘more than twice the purchase Avios rate!’… but HFPers can make their own mind up. As soon as the Avios offer is verbally accepted NO further refund will be permitted. Simple booking in limited currencies only.

    Sample prices:
    £100 refund – 10,500
    £250 – 28,600
    £500 – 60,600

    • Rhys says:

      Where is this from?

      • Nick says:

Ooohh did I get there before HFP?!

Got any cancelled flights? Why not call and ask 😄

    • Mike P says:

      Is this fact or hypothesis?

      • Rhys says:

Nope, had it confirmed. Article today/tomorrow. You are effectively buying Avios for around 0.8-0.9p

        • Andrew says:

Seems a pretty lousy deal considering you’re doing them a favour by not taking a refund.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

And if they devalue AVIOS, win win for BA!

          • TGLoyalty says:

You can pay for wine though

          • TGLoyalty says:

Ofcourse that’s a bad idea but just saying 🙂

I’d probably take the deal if I was down to less than 250k

Highly unlikely there will be a devaluation

  • MinR says:

Is there a universal ‘fee-free cancellation within 24 Hours’ policy/legislation in the EU similar to the US?

I’ve previously been able to cancel within 24 hours at no charge with both BA and VA, but QR said they have no grace period policy.

    • Nick says:

No, outside the US this is voluntary for airlines to offer if they want.

  • ilou says:

Is BA not going to extend status ie blank extension to all members ? !

I can’t believe that they expect people to keep their status when nobody is flying !

    • Andrew says:

Seems not. They are now the only major airline not giving an extension. Even Lufthansa that was holding out too, announced this week they were extending by a year. But the general consensus of readers on this site is that BA shouldn’t give an extension. A view I don’t understand at all, guess people like the thrill of tier point runs and they will be doing back to back day trips to Helsinki in an attempt to maintain status due to the lack of meaningful flying.

      • WaynedP says:

Last I heard, Helsinki had been removed form the schedule 🙁

        • Andrew says:

Finnair still flies from LHR to Helsinki several times a day (once regular flying resumes), an Avios and tier point earning One World partner.

          • AJA says:

Yes Finnair still flies the route but have you seen how much they charge in biz class? That is going to be one very expensive TP run now.

          • Lumma says:

            Tirana, Marrakech, Malta, Bucharest?

  • Sk123 says:

When paying my Amex bill with Curve (linked to HSBC Premier Mastercard), could I set it up as a direct debit or do I make monthly payments using their debit card option for making payment?

    • Anna says:

Curve isn’t a bank account so you can’t set up direct debits. You can make payments with the Curve card but unless it’s metal you’ll be charged 1.5% on top.

  • Qwertyknowsbest says:

Anyone offer method of checking if a flight is still scheduled? Checked with dummy booking but showing no seats available, so could be fully booked.
