The new HFP chat thread – Sunday 24th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://www.headforpoints.com/2020/05/24/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-24th-may/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I’ve set up a Hargreaves Lansdown “active savings” account to benefit from the £25 incentive as well as IHG points from funding the transfers in. I hadn’t thought HL was impacted by the “Curve Fronted” changes. However, my ingoing transactions are being declined.

Can anybody else confirm their experiences, as I had thought conventional wisdom was that HL is still ok? Kick in the teeth otherwise.

    • TGLoyalty says:

HL transactions don’t work with IHG from my experience. Doesn’t matter what the amount is.

      • Chris K says:

Ditto. Not worked for nearly a year.

      • Brian W says:

Does anyone know if they work with Lloyd’s as the underlying card?

        • Chris K says:

Worked for me a couple of weeks ago with no charges at Lloyd’s end.

I’m having issues with crv app authorising transactions above an unknown amount though.

      • Crafty says:

Thanks. Very helpful. Tried with Hilton Barclaycard instead which seems to have worked, though I’ll monitor for any charges.

    • Tom says:

Does anybody know is this would work with HSBC Premier Elite mastercard?

  • Baresi says:

Amex Platinum – Has anyone else noticed there is only 3 hotels on the travel transfer partners no Shangri-La Golden Circle or Melia Rewards!

  • Kai says:

And Shangri-la was never a transfer partner.. Status only.

    • Baresi says:

      Cheers 👍

        Accor Gold Status:
When Accor state “Guaranteed room up to 3 days before arrival”. Is this literally the next, more expensive room up from the one you have already booked or a completely separate Catagory of room?

        • Rob says:

It means, even if full, they guarantee to get you a room. This is done by charging you a huge premium so they can pay off someone else who will turn up to find they have no bed.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

Sorry, I copied the wrong statement from Accor Gold:
Upgrade to a next room category subject to availability.
So, is this literally the next, more expensive room available or a completely different category?
            E.g Classic to Superior!

        • Andrew M says:

Wouldn’t it just be the same category of room and they will “walk” someone without status and give you their room? I wouldn’t be expecting any upgrades from Accor.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

Sofitel appear from lots of reviews to upgrade you if your gold?

Deloitte now advising Virgin on restructuring

    • Ken says:

Deloitte’s are advising a consortium of lenders rather than advising Virgin.

It suggests Branson not putting capital in unless the lenders take a hair cut. As the lenders include the likes of Elliott and Greybull, I can’t blame him one little bit.
Who’d shed a tear for those parasites?

To be honest, Virgin (the brand) hold most of the cards – don’t think it’s worth a carrot without Virgin on the side of the plane.
Ideal solution is a pre-pack with Branson still involved with a meaningful stake, lenders taking some pain, Delta having to give up some of their debt and leasing companies having to take some kit back.

      • Doug M says:

Had Virgin on the side of the plane and Dicky’s ownership when it got in this mess.

        • TGLoyalty says:

And a global shutdown due to a virus.

          • Doug M says:

They’ll be a lot of companies pointing to the pandemic for the failures, but the root cause will be years of under performance. Virgin took about 5 minutes to be in financial trouble. They were running the business on tomorrow’s tickets paying today’s costs.

  • Ming the Merciless says:

Just checked in to HI Nottingham. I’m the only guest ( 200 rooms) and outnumbered by staff 2:1. They were over the moon to have someone to chat to.

Check in was straight forward, ID check and a letter from my employer confirming critical worker status. I wrote the letter this afternoon as I’m a director of the company.

No food or drink available, but it’s no loss!
