The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 27th May

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here:  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

I have BA flights from Leeds Bradford to Abu Dhabi via Heathrow for March next year. I have just had an email from BA cancelling the domestic legs in both directions. I am assuming BA have perhaps dumped all the Leeds Bradford to Heathrow flights. Will be calling BA later but wondered if anyone else has heard about this?

    • Rob says:

Will have a look. Bit odd because there will be slot sitting going on for quite a while and Leeds Bradford is very convenient and presumably cheap to land at.

    • Anna says:

BA regularly cancels our connections to and from MAN due to schedule changes – have you tried to contact them to see if they can get you on another flight? It could be that they haven’t re-booked you as you won’t be able to make your connection on the same day any more.

  • Blue Mountains says:

Just got a flood of cancellations for flights even up to Apr 2021. Only leg being cancelled is LBA. I have a suspicion they’ve just culled the route. And so it begins…

    • Gina says:

Just had the same on the LBA-LHR route….Has the same happened for Manchester to LHR?!

      • Gina says:

Should have checked my booking first! My return back to MAN has not been cancelled (yet) so maybe keeping this open & shutting Leeds – which will be a shame

  • Daniel Evans says:

Does anyone know why Virgin Flying Club website is down? It’s been down since at least the weekend – lots of people complaining on Twitter. All Virgin will say is there are technical difficulties.

    • davvero says:

That’s a sign that you need to transfer all points to Hilton (after checking what Rob is doing first of course) as a dodgy website is the sign that they’re about to fail.

      • Rob says:

If you couldn’t book a flight, yes. If you can’t get your FC balance, not really.

    • Pat the Postie says:

What do you mean by flying club as I didn’t think it was a separate site?

      • memesweeper says:

It may not be — but its likely to use a separate database. If that’s down everything else online might be fine, but no way to check balance, redeem, add FFN to a booking etc.

    • Daniel Evans says:

It’s still down but in the meantime Virgin’s (rather good) WhatsApp Team have been in touch to confirm a refund of points/taxes on a flight to Tel Aviv they cancelled the other day.

  • Andrew says:

    Manufactured Spending…

Some HfP readers have access to an Employer’s Benefits site. I’ve noticed that mine is now selling digital Mastercards (up to £200 value) with a 1% fundreturn.

Unfortunately they don’t accept Amex, just Mastercard and Visa. But the option might be useful to someone.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

I got 3500 MR’s for calling up and asking if any retention bonus on BAPP.

    • Michael says:

Result! I tried a couple of weeks ago without success. When’s your renewal date?

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        10 x months time!

        • Michael says:

Did you speak to Manila or Brighton? It was Manila who told me there was nothing they could do other than a downgrade to Blue.

    • BJ says:

First I’ve heard of that. Signs that amex are hurting a little too.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

No bonuses on my account according to CS agent, went away and came back with 3.5k avios bonus as a goodwill gesture. 😃

    • Kai says:

      MR on BAPP card?

      • BJ says:

I thought that was a slip but interesting if true. Potentially cheaper for amex depending what the customer then does with them.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Whoops! Sorry meant 3500 x avios.

  • BJ says:

@Harry T and others with trip plans for South Africa: LoyaltyLobby reporting no tourist arrivals until 1 February 2021, possible business trips before then.

    • Harry T says:

Oh dear, guess I’m out of pocket! Thanks for letting me know.

  • H says:

If you have the BAPP card do the taxes on British Airways redemptions get you 3 points per £?
    Thank u

  • Bazza says:

What happened to the chat thread for Thursday? The young chap abusing shoelace again?
