Earlier than I expected, especially given the UK Government’s quarantine plans, London City Airport has announced that it will restart commercial operations ‘from the end of June’.

Closed since 25th March, the airport will initially open for domestic flights.

International flights are expected to resume ‘in early July’.

London City Airport will re-open in late June

Both departing and arriving passengers will be subject to Temperature Checking Technology, although there is no mention of any requirement to wear face masks.

Robert Sinclair, CEO at London City Airport, said in a statement:

“When our doors re-open again shortly, our ambition is to provide the best airport experience in the UK to our passengers by ensuring we follow industry guidance to the letter and by maintaining our reputation as the quickest London airport to get to and through.

While there are many challenges ahead for the UK aviation industry, it is our hope that by outlining the steps we are taking to make the airport safe, and by incorporating the views of our regular travellers into our plans, we will give people the confidence to fly from our airport to destinations across the UK and Europe.”

    International flights to where?

  • will says:

I’m extremely uncomfortable with air travel resuming, if everyone opens up air travel then one outbreak is potentially everywhere before we even realise it’s happened, ie pretty much what happened with Italy during the initial spread in Europe.

It’s more likely brits will be taking it abroad than the other way around as things stand!

    • Mr. AC says:

Opening air travel doesn’t really matter, it won’t make matters worse. In the western world, we haven’t suppressed COVID, we just flattened the curve. The disease in within each country and isn’t going anywhere. Compare the charts for China / Taiwan / South Korea with any European country and you’ll see what I mean.

    • S says:

The virus has proven to be an absolute non issue though.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports are open, not that they have a lot of flights. One BA flight a day to LHR.

London City now decides to re-open – for domestic flights only. But will any airlines want to fly them – if BA can’t do more than one a day to LHR with its onward connections, will they even fill one a day to LCY?

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I hear a new the route to Barnard Castle is getting a lot of interest. Talk of a Gov’t subsidy.

      • Lady London says:

I heard HS2 was being extended to Barnard Castle.

  • mr_jetlag says:

some hope yet for my LCY-JMK getaway then!

  • Stu N says:

Not sure how LCY is going to manage social distancing – there are numerous pinch points in the terminal and the departure gates in particular are extremely crowded with a full E190.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      They won’t at 2m

    • Ian says:

Airports have made it clear that this 2m social distancing nonsense can’t work – and it certainly can’t work in an aircraft. Eventually people will realise that and either make the decision to fly (like me) accepting some tiny amount of risk or they’ll decide to stay at home.

    • Andrew says:

Might be easier at LCY than others thanks to the small number of flights and short check in times.

      Instigate a queuing system outside
Don’t allow anyone in more than 1 hour before their flight
Basically encourage people to go straight from check in to security to gate to plane without stopping

  • Graham D says:

Why is the leading picture for this article of an aircraft (RJ100/BAe146) retired from BA Cityflyer many years ago?!

    • Dubious says:

It’s a picture of London City – why does it need to be recent?? It’s a nice picture too…

  • AndyC says:

“Closed since 25th March, the airline will initially open for domestic flights.”. ‘Airline’? ’Airport’, surely!

  • Luca says:

My LCY-FAO flights for mid July have been cancelled, Gatwick-FAO flights are showing as operating.
