The new HFP chat thread – Wednesday 3rd June

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://www.headforpoints.com/2020/06/03/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-3rd-june/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

We will continue to monitor how this is working.  Let’s see how it goes.  Take care!

  1. Dave H says:

Does anyone know when Linate airport is due to open?

    • Lottie says:

I think I it open now , as from the end of may for domestic flights, Qatar and emirates too I believe.

  2. davvero says:

I’m thinking on booking a CE flight out of LCY in August. Do you think there’ll be a return to normal catering by then?

    • Taking the p?

      • Andrew says:

Seems like a reasonable question. Given that you don’t get any extra space on board or lounge access on CE LCY flights literally the only benefit is the catering (and tier points if you need them).

      • davvero says:

Catering on BA citiflyer has always been better than mainline so I had hopes that they may offer something better by August if they’re operating.

    • Doug M says:

I’d be more concerned at whether the flight would take place than worry about the catering. LCY is not expected to restart flights until early July.

  3. Simon says:

I think I recall people saying on here that they have hit 55k IHG points to achieve Spire status but haven’t received the 25k bonus points. Is this correct?

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I did initially and had to contact IHG to get my bonus to appear. I thought I read this had been fixed now?

    • Got the Choice benefit as soon as I hit 55k on 26 May.

    • Andrew says:

But no sign yet of the “free” choice benefit which all existing Spires were promised when they gave the year extension.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        Andrew:
Have you read any reports anywhere of people contacting IHG about the missing free choice benefit extra 25k?

        • Julia R says:

I’ve contacted them. The said that there is no free choice benefit. I questioned this as their website seems to say differently and haven’t received a response

          • Andrew says:

Hmm, yes it really does say on the website and the email that we would get the free choice benefit. And reported on HFP of course. Maybe Rob can escalate to his IHG contacts.

  4. Could someone pls remind me – is there any bonus for adding a supp on the American Express Rewards Credit Card once the account is open?

  5. Aliks says:

I have held off calling BA for a month, but would now like to sort out a couple of things:
    1. Get a cash refund for cancelled European flights
    2. Merge a BA 241 voucher booking with the return flight Avios booking
Anyone tell me which BA number to call to sort this out?
The main consolidated number refuses to handle Avios changes . . . .

    • Andrew says:

I just called You First yesterday to get a refund for a cancelled flight – answered straight away and handled efficiently. But that’s only available if flying First. My understanding is that generally wait times are quite short, so I would think in the time it took you to search HFP and write your question you could have been through to the call centre on the normal number.

      • Aliks says:

Just for the record, I did get through to the right team on the main number 0800 727 800 after a 10 min wait.

It did take a couple of tries though, as several of their menu options lead to messages saying effectively “do this online”, and then the call terminates.

    • BA won’t link the 2 legs on separate bookings as a rule any more, but you may get lucky with a co-ooperative CSA. I’ve never had any issues from leaving 2 legs as separate bookings though.
You First has been the saving grace of BA in the last couple of months!

  6. Aliks says:

I’m sure this question has been asked before, but despite a few searches I can’t locate it in on HeaddforPoints

  7. Has anyone successfully received a Qatar status match yet?

    • pin perl says:

They wrote to me yesterday that I should send them my Velocity card and statement with name and expiry date clearly showing………
I’m not sure what they want as I sent them a Krisflyer card and statement and name and date was clearly visible

    • I asked to match my Turkish Elite Plus status when they first announced the status match but nothing so far (not even an email confirming they received my request)

  8. BA-Flyer says:

I made a deposit with NS&I over a week ago, via Curve. Payment is showing on the source card, but pending in the NS&I account. Anyone know if this is usual NS&I behaviour?

    • I find that the payments are cleared on the 6th working day after deposit.

    • Genghis says:

Income bonds acct? Payments in between c20th and 5th following month are pending (though accrue interest) while they sort interest payments

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Your funds won’t clear to be able to withdrawal for in my experience 7 x working days.

    • Peter says:

Is still working without attracting a fee (Curve – IHG)?

  9. Jonathan44t says:

Is there a way to get out of a flight I no loner want to take?

Have tickets to Lisbon for a weekend at the end of June with TAP. Purpose of the trip no longer valid due to Covid and, in spite of the BBC article welcoming UK citizens, I’m not sure I fancy going flying with a mask and going to be locked down.

Any chances I can recover these tickets / forfeit them? What options do I have? Airline hasn’t cancelled flights. Paid with a Plat last year before this whole mess started if that helps.

    Thanks

    J

    • TAP are likely to have some flexibility – have you checked what their policy is at the moment? You probably won’t be able to get a refund but you may be eligible to take a voucher.

      • Jonathan44t says:

Should’ve mentioned I booked with Lastminute, though their website has standard wording for any refunds to be pursued directly with the airline. So haven’t tried calling TAP yet.

Would plat insurance not cover this given FCO guidelines not to travel? Vouchers admittedly would be better than nothing, but only marginally in my case as I no longer need to fly to Portugal.

          • Jonathan44t says:

Thanks for the reply, didn’t even know this document existed!

Based on my reading of that PDF, is the following correct: If an airline is willing to offer refund in the form of voucher/free change of flight, your claim to insurance is automatically invalidated.

Saw that TAP has the voucher, or free exchange option on their website, but I have use for neither. I guess the insurance company won’t care when it comes to this? Would be a massive bummer.

TAP also has a requested to ‘original form of payment’ but I’m guess I can’t trigger this if the flight hasn’t been cancelled yet?

          • Yes, it appears so. Lisbon is a lovely city, I’m sure you’ll be able to make use of the vouchers somehow!

          • Oh! Matron! says:

Aeroflot are offering nothing but full forfeiture for a flight in July, so thanks for sharing this. IO was going to pursue it through Expedia, but I know MMMV, so back to Amex we go 🙂

    • Rui N. says:

You can take a voucher valid for 2 years (I think!) with a 20% bonus. I think you can even do it online. But hurry, TAP is starting to fly a lot more routes pretty soon, so it is likely that they remove that offer soon(ish).

    • Charlieface says:

Sit it out a bit longer, they might still cancel flights

      • Yep, I would advise to wait. Also they do not email to tell you if your booking is cancelled, you need to check yourself in manage my booking.

Our various flights in June and July have all been cancelled (all LHR-LIS), the most recent one was only cancelled 5 days prior to departure. I was unsuccessful getting them to refund over the phone, so have put in charge-backs through Amex. Has been a nightmare compared to the BA flights I had, so an incentive to always use BA in future…

If they’ve not cancelled 3-5 days before the flight is due to depart, I’d go the voucher as noted above.

  10. James says:

Do people think Amex have any more platinum offers in the pipeline? Similar to the £100 credit recently

  11. Michael C says:

Easyjet IOM flights suspended indefinitely (despite Easyjet offering them as from June 18!)
