Here are the countries that Scotland residents can visit without quarantine – if they let you in

The Scottish Government published its own list of countries today from which returning residents will be exempt from quarantine from Friday.

It is, confusingly, different from the list of quarantine-free countries for residents of England, which we published here.

Which countries can Scottish residents visit without quarantine?

Here are the countries you can visit without having to quarantine on your return to Scotland.  Remember that there is no guarantee that these countries will let you in – good luck getting into New Zealand before 2021.

Which countries are missing from the English list?

There are two countries where you don’t need to quarantine on your return if you live in England, but you do if you live in Scotland:

  • Serbia
  • Spain

Can you travel from Spain via an English airport to avoid quarantine?

Legally, no.  If you fly into an English airport then you are still required to undertake 14 days quarantine on your return from Spain.

However, it isn’t clear if there is any way for the Scottish Government to receive information on passengers using English airports.

Which countries does the Foreign Office list as safe to visit?

As a reminder, there is also a second list, just to confuse you even further.

This list, below, comprises countries where the Foreign Office advises you can travel to safely.  This means that your travel insurance will be valid once again.

Remember that – unless a country also appears on the ‘no quarantine’ list above – you will still have to quarantine for 14 days on returning to Scotland.

Whether it’ll work in practice is another question but Nicola Sturgeon did say that if you provide an address in Scotland when you land into the U.K., that’ll be passed to the authorities in Scotland regardless of where the airport you land at is located.

  • Anna says:

The Spanish government wasn’t happy about Sturgeon’s independence ambitions to start with, there’s no way they would vote for her to be allowed to back into the EU now!

    • Andrew L says:

The problem for Scotland is that most of the EU countries would vote against Scotland rejoining. There’s only one place in the UK that interests the EU….London!

    • Callum says:

Though you’re of course ignoring the fact that the Spanish government have said many, many times that they’d do no such thing and they see no parallels between this and Catalonia…

I also have no idea on what basis Andrew could possibly make the claim that the majority of EU countries would block Scotland. That seems rather nonsensical – as does the reasoning that they’d do so because they’re “desperate to get London” and don’t want anything else.

I’d be much more concerned about the practicality of a border with the rest of the UK than other countries vetoing it. As demonstrated by Northern Ireland, it’s virtually unworkable.

  • Jamie says:

I have included some suggested edits 🙂

It is different from the list of quarantine-free countries for residents of England because it is based on public health information relevant to the prevalence of the virus in Scotland and not ramblings from Boris!

The getting around the rules questions are a bit tiring, your port of entry doesn’t matter. It’s the quantise rules that matter. Risk of getting caught for breaking them shouldn’t be a concern, spreading the virus should.

    • jc says:

Or because every announcement in England has been followed by a fractionally different one from Nicola to make a point

      • David says:

Given the difference in levels of infections, hospitalisations and deaths have in recent weeks, you could see those differences as “having a point” rather than “making a point”

        • Jamie says:

Rates of infection are now markedly different between England and Scotland. Health is a devolved power. Data supposed the decisions being taken by the devolved government. I really don’t see what the issue is here…

Some really good stuff on this, based on official data (that is cited).

If people don’t want to follow the rules set by the Scottish Government then it’s quite simple, don’t be in Scotland while those rules are in force!

  • Sandgrounder says:

I’m in Iceland this week, I would thoroughly recommend it as a break from the Covid-19 world. They have got an aggressive test and trace programme, and a population with enough of a sense of community to follow the rules. Apart from hand sanitisers at.the entrance to most places of business things are pretty much normal here. It’s great to stroll along and not be triggered as a panting jogger runs towards you. It’s just a shame it’s only about 11C really.

    • Vit says:

I was there for 10 days at the start of March just before the whole world virtually went into lockdown. I must say I was the most paranoid one but I must also say the whole country seems to be quite well prepared. From small groceries store to supermarket to car rental office to petrol station, they all have hand sanitiser all placed to be used. Their news channel keep people informed but no scaremongering, etc…. As i flew back in the EDI — nothing at all, not even a single hand sanitiser.

Just to add as well, surely it was a personal preference and still is, I was make fun of multiple times along the way from EDI to ABZ in public transport for wearing surgical mask. 🙂 oh well….

    • Lady London says:

      Ah! a heatwave in Iceland

  • Lady London says:

Erm…a bit worried because I didnt see England on the list of countries you can enter Scotland from without quarantine.

  • blenz101 says:

Shame that the UAE doesn’t make the list, the control measures and testing has been outstanding. There are some high numbers per million driven by high density labour areas where mass testing has been carried out, some of the highest in the world. Just c.330 deaths in total, world class heathcare.

Mask are mandatory when out in public (beach and poolside are OK), waterparks are back, malls are fully open, and hotel rates are rock bottom rates.

    • Josh says:

Covering up is a way of life for women in the UAE though.

    • marcw says:

No one bloody believes crappy UAE data.

      • Rob says:

My sister-in-law lives there and teaches – it is apparently as good as claimed.

        • Blenz101 says:

Living here at the moment as well so wasn’t quoting speculation or a government line. UAE is genuinely getting back to some kind of normal.

Would liked to have come back to the U.K. over the summer but don’t fancy leaving a Covid safe country for a 14 day quarantine in a country that is handling things in a questionable way.

Only issue for inbound tourists would be that masks are required in public, 3000AED / £650 fine if caught without. From what I have seen on social media wearing a mask seems an affront to most people back home. Amazingly even in 40oC heat we all manage, asthma or not!

  • Patrycja says:

I just booked a week in Majorca flying out of Edinburgh next Sunday🤦‍♀️

    • Betty says:

Have Fun. It was great last week. And they have hand sanitizer everywhere, too. But don’t forget to fill out the electronic form.
Mallorca was so relaxing and it felt well prepared for tourists.

      • Patrycja says:

Thank you Betty! I’m looking forward to the week in a sun!

  • Andrew L says:

Little Jimmy Krankie….she makes my blood boil and I hated Crackerjack!
