Welcome to the new-look Head for Points

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

OK, we’re back after a couple of hours of downtime.

Things look a little different as you can tell ……

After eight years of using a layout which was, to be honest, already dated when we started using it in 2012, we have pulled the site into the 21st century.

I know that our core readers didn’t really care how we looked but the old theme was starting to take its toll.  HfP should hit 20 million page views this year (we are around the 450th biggest UK website) with a further 9 million articles read via email.  However, the old look was starting to impact our ability to attract new readers and secure large advertising contracts.  We hope you like what we’ve done.

I don’t want to say any more at this point because my prime consideration today is making sure that everything is working as expected.

If you see a technical issue – a broken link, a formatting issue, something which simply looks wrong on your device – then please tell us. Do NOT comment in this thread.  There is a separate ‘noise free’ thread for technical issues which is here.  Post your problem and we’ll get onto it.

If it’s a formatting issue, please say what device you are using.  We expect some issues with some mobile devices.

If you simply want to say that you like or hate the new look, then feel free to say that in this thread!  If you have any requests for new features we could add in the medium term, please also put your ideas in this thread.  The other one is exclusively for short-term problems requiring a quick fix.

You will see some minor differences around the site in terms of menus and layout.  However, there are no fundamental changes and all of the old content remains.  There are no changes to the usual ‘three articles, all posted by 6am’ scheduling.

Tomorrow I will run an article explaining exactly what has changed in terms of site functionality.

In a couple of days I’ll write a longer piece on what we’ve done, why we did it, who did it and what we learnt whilst doing it.  Given that we started approaching design agencies back in November, it has been a long process.

Thank you for your continued support, especially in the current climate.  Our revenue may be down but our page views have been consistently higher than the same period in 2019 which keeps us motivated.

Rob

PS.  If you made a comment on the ‘old’ site this morning then you might find it has disappeared.  Apologies.  Please feel free to post it again.

I like the new design in iOS safari, looks similar to the times and guardian apps. I do miss the old landmark header though.

  • Youllnever says:

The new design looks good! Would it be possible to add “dark mode” as well so that it’s easier on the eyes during low-light conditions?

  • Connor says:

Much better in my opinion, as others have said it is very white and slightly harsh on the eyes.A background like the Guardian or BBC website would be better while keeping the aesthetic. Also a bit more distinction between comments would be nice.

Hey, Congrats rob and team for the new design, it will take me some time to get used to, but to be honest, i feel that it is a bit over crowded with words and all at first.

I liked the previous website where we had the news articles all in like a list, with the recent one first, so that would be nice to see here, also a dark mode of the website too!

Also 10 pages of comments aswell may be overwhelming, maybe if you could lay it out like the old HFP website that would be nice.

These are just little things however but its very nice and looks slick! Its just having to get used to it!

The news articles are in a list here too! Just broken up slightly …. The comment pagination has not changed from the old site.

  • Emily says:

‘Go on strike – sell your home for free!’ That is the top banner I see. Along with the Nutmeg logo. I’m 100% for change where improvements are made but I can not identify a single improvement with this redesign. ‘Head for Points’ has been enhanced 🙂

    • Rob says:

At 5pm last night we got an enquiry from a major travel brand congratulating us on the relaunch and asking for an advertising quote for a new campaign they are about to launch, so that’s enough improvement for us 🙂

You have to move with the times. HfP is a big business these days (three people on the payroll, plus me, with a City of London office when we eventually go back). You can’t go on for ever running off a 2007ish design template.

In short, I think this iteration is better on mobile, worse on desktop. As others have said, there’s a lot of white, something which is especially obvious on the desktop site and is harsh on the eyes.

  • Edd M says:

Hi guys, it’s better, HOWEVER, readability is quite poor.

The spacing between characters in the chosen typeface is looser than standard (why?!) and it makes it a little hard to read, especially headlines. Also there’s so much white you lose contrast and distinction between different areas of the page.

I would be tempted to move back to a more standard typeface altogether tbh.

    • Edd M says:

Actually on reflection the body text may be OK, it’s just the typeface to the headlines looks odd. I think there is slight loosening of the space between each letter.

I think what was annoying me too is the over frequent use of CAPITALS? Seems like a lot of links etc are styled in CAPITAL. I think subconsciously it looks like shouting and a bit messy, most blogs don’t style this way.

The blue colour is a few grades too light – it looks like an ‘active hyperlink’ in the early days of the internet. I suggest a more relaxing ROYAL BLUE (see what I mean?!) but it’s a personal preference.

  • Nick says:

So I’ve been reading through it more to see if I get used to it, and in part, yes. But the comments are still a pain to read. The text is too big, or at least it is relative to everything else – the space between each line of text is too big and means it takes longer to read and there’s less on the page, which requires more effort to scroll (iPhone). Hopefully you can do something about that.

    • Nick says:

I’ve also just seen the ‘contact us’ box at the bottom of every page. That I like a lot – really does look professional.

    • Rhys says:

We are definitely looking at improving how comments work as this is a big pain point at the moment. We already have some ideas.
