American Express has launched new cashback deals with Marriott and Hyatt. Assuming that you have them on your cards, you could make a decent saving on your bookings between now and the end of the year.

If targeted, you will find these offers on your online statement page. Remember to look under each card you have, and to save the offer to your card. Do it sooner rather than later, as the offers disappear once the target number of registrations has been hit.

American Express hotel cashback deals Marriott Hyatt

(This is, I am told, one of the frustrating issues for companies offering these deals. In order to cap their exposure, they need to limit the number of registrations. However, it is impossible to know what percentage of people who register will actually make a purchase before the deadline.

The problem is getting worse. Cardholders realise that good offers disappear quickly so they register for decent ones ‘just in case’ even if they are unlikely to take advantage of it. We wrote an article on a good Mr Porter deal recently only to have to pull it when it hit the registration cap.)

Get £50 American Express cashback at Marriott hotels

What is the Marriott Amex cashback deal?

You will receive £50 cashback when you spend £200 by 31st December.

Despite what I originally wrote, it seems that some people do have this on Marriott Bonvoy American Express cards. My wife had it on her Gold.

The list covers Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

The rules say that it is valid on ‘check-out spend’ only but the rules are not as specific as those for the Hyatt offer below.

Remember that Amex charges a 3% foreign exchange fee which will eat up part of your saving. If you have a card with 0% FX fees, you may want to split the bill and put just enough on your Amex to be certain of hitting £200.

It is not clear if cumulative spend counts. It generally does with hotel promotions.

Don’t forget to register for the latest Marriott promotion

The latest Marriott Bonvoy promotion offers you 2,500 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points per stay. I would value these at £12.50 based on 0.5p per point.

You get a one-off bonus of 5,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points on your third stay.

The offer runs from 13th August to 18th October. You MUST register via this link before your stay.

Combine with this offer with your American Express cashback and you would have a very attractive deal.

If you are not already a Marriott Bonvoy member you can join here.

World of Hyatt

What is the Hyatt Amex cashback deal?

You will receive £100 cashback when you spend £300 by 31st December.

The list of participating Hyatt hotels covers Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.

Importantly, the terms state that pre-paid online rooms do not count. You need to have £300 of check-out spend to trigger the bonus. This could, of course, be food and drink charges billed during a pre-paid stay.

Remember that Amex charges a 3% foreign exchange fee which will eat up part of your saving outside the UK. If you have a card with 0% FX fees, you may want to split the bill and put just enough on your Amex to be certain of hitting £300.

It is not clear if cumulative spend counts. It generally does with hotel promotions.

The current World of Hyatt promotion ends on 15th September – details here. It isn’t yet clear what, if anything, will replace it.

And if you need a taxi …..

A new cashback offer with high-end London ride app Wheely has appeared on some cards. You will receive £50 cashback when you take three Wheely rides by 7th November.

Wheely is like Uber Exec – you will usually get a high-end Mercedes – but reader feedback is that the service is a lot more polished.

  • Andrew says:

Nothing to stop you splitting the Marriott bill at checkout. First £200 on Amex, next £667 on LBG, next £667 on Santander, final amount on a FX free card.

    • Steve says:

Great assessment, and some of the Lloyds and Santander Cards are zero FX fees anyway, so may not need the forth step. I’m always surprised how little journalistic time HFP gives to travel offers that are non Amex.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I have a Halifax and Lloyd’s account and neither show the Marriott deal.

        • Andrew says:

Have you consented to participate in “Everyday Offers” or “Forbidden Word Extras”?

If so, how many offers do you have?

The volume of offers you get is in line with the volume of use. I use my BoS card at least twice daily and have about 25 offers.

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

‘it is impossible to know what percentage of people who register will actually make a purchase before the deadline’

This is a pretty weak excuse, it’s bread and butter marketing analytics to predict uptake. With the amount of data Amex have on customer-level spend patterns and interaction with previous offers they should be able to do this quite accurately.

Rob – if this is a problem Amex want to solve, I know a few people in retail/grocery supplier analytics who are all over this sort of thing for vouchers/coupons (which are mostly supplier-funded). Happy to make an introduction.

    • Rob says:

Not sure about Amex wanting to solve it, but I know some of the companies who make these offers want it solved, because they tell me!

I doubt the analytics works though. For a start, we will easily drive 5,000+ registrations today for the Marriott offer which is a huge % of the total. If we hadn’t mentioned it, those registrations wouldn’t have happened. I’m guessing the Mr Porter offer I mentioned in the article must have been covered on a fashion site for 8,000 registrations to go in 24 hours.

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Sure, and if what’s happening is that you’re hitting your uptake tolerance because of external traffic then you can’t analyse your way out of that. But if the issue is exposure and that you’ve got a large population coming in who are saving the offer and not converting then it shouldn’t be that difficult to model save-to-use conversion propensity per user. If you think you’ve had a lot of low-converting people sign up to the offer (i.e. your exposure is high but you might not get much for it) then you absolutely can solve it. If you’re modelling your conversion with confidence at a customer level you can just lift the registrations cap to hit whatever spend volume you’re targeting (or do away with the # saved cap entirely and just have a utilisation target in the background that you optimise towards).

        • Rhys says:

But how easy is it to average out across different offers? I imagine some offers have a much higher uptake than others. If a particularly strong offer comes along then all of a sudden that modelling might be worthless!

          • TGLoyalty says:

Surely AMEX already provide this detail so the retailer knows what level they are likely to actually boost spend with rather than just give those that were already going to use their services money off.

i.e. I already have 2 stays booked with Marriott costing c£1,600 total once you add in incidental spend but now I’m going to get 25% back and it’s not influencing my decision to put more spend going their way. Perhaps if the offer was £400 get £100 I might have put a few more stays their way knowing I’d get 25% off further future stays.

          • TGLoyalty says:

btw my example is personal I’m just saying I can’t believe these offers are being put together without any insight on how many are saved and actually used.

And that cardholders spend at that retailer before/after – obviously anonymous data

  • High Grade says:

I’ve also got a Melia spend £300 get £75 back on my BAPP.

  • DB2020 says:

No new offers on my cards. The Shop Small offer hasn’t triggered on a couple of recent transactions at Shop Small locations.

With the current situation and impact on travel and my job, I have to seriously put on my thinking hat and plan for the future.

Might just be a good time to cancel the Platinum card after 25 years of having one.

    • Lady London says:

see if you can get the 40,000 MR’s that are being reported as now being offered, first?

a good valedictory after 25 years service to Amex 🙂

  • Ryanfozzie says:

Seen a few comments about the 40K retention bonus… any further info on this?

I had the 20K earlier on this year and my fee has since posted. Spoke to a lovley agent but was told no such offer existed. This was a UK agent after I was asking to cancel.

    • Ryanfozzie says:

Just to add, had the card for 5 years and push 20K – 30K through it a year.

    • Lev441 says:

It definitely does exist – I got the 40,000 last month. Have kept the card but will be binning it on my return from Cyprus!

      • Paul says:

I called just after my fee posted and made clear that I felt Amex had not done much to retain me. The argument that we have the offers doesn’t wash with em as they require spend Virgin refunded 20% plus of the fee without being asked and Amex frankly need to up their game. 40,000 points was sold to me as £180 off the fee but they may be more valuable. As I said earlier the insurance is a major incentive.

        • Andrew says:

I guess they have upped it to 40k as when they were handing out the 20k it was double value on burn rate and they sold the £180 as their value then.

  • AS says:

Called to cancel Amex Plat and asked if there was any retention bonus of 40K, nothing at all…were happy for me to cancel

  • Harry T says:

I was given 40k points after being put through to someone in Amex UK customer services who deals with retentions and “high value” customers.
