Fly to Athens with a flat bed in BA Club World for £197 – and earn 160 tier points

As we covered over the weekend, British Airways has decided to make deeper fare cuts as its September sale comes towards its end.

There are some genuinely crazy Club Europe fares currently available. These are worth 80 British Airways Executive Club tier points return – and in some cases 160 tier points return.

British Airways Club Europe cheap tier points

Given that the requirements for status are currently reduced by a quarter (Bronze requires 225 tier points, Silver requires 450 tier points, Gold requires 1,125 tier points) you could earn status for very little money indeed. You would also get a few short breaks in the New Year too.

What are the 160 tier point routes?

Here is the list of the cheapest routes which earn 160 tier points which I published on Saturday:

(The list of 80 tier points routes, which starts at £119, is in this article.)

Club Europe British Airways sale cheap tier points
  • Algiers £242
  • Bucharest £172
  • Catania £228
  • Funchal £208
  • Gran Canaria £204
  • Istanbul £182
  • Kalamata £274
  • Lanzarote £184
  • Malta £164
  • Marrakech £205
  • Paphos £198
  • Preveza Lefkada £246
  • Reykjavik £154
  • Sofia £146
  • Tenerife £204
  • Thessaloniki £222
  • Tirana £176

However, I forgot one: Athens.

This was a big mistake, because Athens is currently being served by a Boeing 787 on selected dates for cargo reasons.

If you book yourself onto these flights, you will get 160 tier points for under £200 AND a flat bed.

(Catering is the standard Club Europe food, unfortunately!)

BA Club World 787 to Athens £197

When is Athens served by a Boeing 787?

At present, it is only showing on a few dates in October:

  • Friday 2nd October at 12.40
  • Friday 9th October at 12.40
  • Friday 16th October at 12.40
  • Friday 23rd October at 12.40

The aircraft turns around immediately, as the 19.55 from Athens. This means that you’ll be returning on a standard short-haul aircraft unless you stay for a week.

These flights can be booked for £197 return in Club Europe / Club World.

Remember that you do not need to quarantine on your return from mainland Greece (unless you live in Scotland) and you do not need to present a coronavirus test result to enter.

You need to be aware, of course, that BA could swap the aircraft at any point. These flights are being run for cargo purposes and so should stick, but the further ahead you book the riskier it is.

You can also find long haul aircraft running occasional services to Amsterdam, Zurich, Madrid and Larnaca.

Corfu is also a 160 tier points route and it’s available for £146 with avios discount. Requires Saturday night stay. Good availability still on 3-4 Oct, 10-11 Oct and 17-18 Oct

How does the cleaning team sanitise every surface that has been touched , on top the the normal lack of cleaning if the plane turns around in 20 minutes ?
It will be as filthy as ours which flew back from Lisbon, where passengers were boarding 15 minutes after the last one left.

    • TGLoyalty says:

They give you an anti bac wipe as you board.

      • meta says:

Yes and that’s pretty much it. These long haul planes are filthier than ever before. My partner’s seat on 787 to Amsterdam was full of crumbs. My armrests were stained. And this was from London! The cabin crew just shrugged and offered another set of wipes. But given morale at BA, who can blame them?

We just now bring our own wipes, spray sanitiser and clean the seat ourselves.
The pre-departure announcement states they have cleaned the aircraft to highest standard. It’s a total joke!

        • Lady London says:

This sounds disturbing. After all the publicity about extra cleaning of planes and cleanliness in flight, this makes BA just look dirty and dishonest.

And actually, I don’t think BA is deliberately being dishonest here – it’s just a basic failure in cleanliness on BA planes. Only, now, it’s more dangerous with Covid.

          • HAM76 says:

One of the advantages of CE has always been that you got a hot towel to clean your seat and table, whereas in ET it was BYOT, bring your own towel.

    • Lady London says:

Can you definitely come back on the same plane if you’re just doing it as a run?
15min does not seem enough to exit immigration and come back in – or even to queue up again at the gate really!

      • ChrisC says:

The two flights in the pictures are on different days!

The text says the return to LHR is 90 minutes later making a back 2 back possible but expensive!

  • Jev says:

Larnaca has also been scheduled on a a 787-8 every Thursday since August and also shows available till end of October.
It will also be warmer in Cyprus than Athens, if you are looking for more winter sun 😉

  • janie says:

My aircraft to Athens has changed twice since booking 3 weeks ago as well as two flight time changes!

  • TeesTraveller says:

There are some crazy BA Holiday deals at the moment. I booked NCL-LHR-JFK in J for next May with 4 nights (in an average 4*) hotel for people and paid £2,700. The hotel is £1,100 on Expedia (although maybe I could have got something of the same standard a little bit cheaper) which makes the flights £800 each (and of this, £180 is APD).

    Crazy times…

  • JdeW says:

Can one use BA Vouchers to pay for sale flights and/or holidays?

    • ChrisC says:

yes for flights and can be done on line as part of the booking process

for holidays you need to call BA Holidays. I just booked my BA holiday as normal and called to use 2 vouchers to pay the balance.

  • Stuart says:

What torture, Dreamliner out, and most likely a Neo back to remind you how bad it normally is.

    • Julian says:

8 hours plus (allowing for time before take off in particular and time in the airport) wearing facemasks sounds like unmitigated hell to me for the sake of some tier points to get status that you don’t even need to get lounge access if you pay just over £300 for an unlimited Priority Pass. Although the cost of the latter seems to have gone up quite a bit compared to a few years ago when it was less than £200 for the unlimited option.

      • TP says:

How is a 4.5hr block time equivalent to 8hrs wearing a mask? If you’re arriving 3.5hrs to the airport in current times you’re probably not doing it right. Queues are minimal, terminals almost empty, you can check in and be pushing back within an hour.

Also, if you’re already holding silver or gold status, you’re in a lounge with your mask off anyway.

        • Rhys says:

Being able to take masks off in lounges is one of the biggest selling points for me at the moment. Much more pleasant.

          • Rob says:

Technically that is not allowed from today unless eating or drinking.

Nothing stops you having a drink on your table of course ….

        • JdeW says:

I can now answer my own question concerning the use of vouchers in the BA sale. Yes, you can use vouchers but depends on what type of voucher they are!! You can use a maximum of 3, which I was able to use as the deposit/part payment towards a BA Malta holiday. Apparently, the vouchers take about 7 days to be processed and show against the booking so, despite the confirmation on BA.com, the holiday still shows as no payment
yet having been made. This will show later.

      • Lady London says:

Hey @Julian Priority Pass has issues and quite
a lot of UK people are finding it useless for getting into lounges now.

There’s various coverage and comments on here over past year or more.

I’ve never paid more than about £145 for unlimited PP and Amex Plat holders get it free. Even if I was back to flying every week for work, I wouldn;t pay that now for Priority Pass. The risk of being turned away from lounges was already extremely high at major UK airports – Priority Pass was clearly only allowed entry when every other category had been (and filled the lounge). Since Covid many lounges are still not reopening, or reopening with even more limited capacity. So the chance of being rejected could be even higher now.

However I agree with you that I wouldn’t do 8 hours plus on an aircraft in a mask just as a tier point run. I’d do a long haul instead!

      • Pablo says:

Are you wearing a scuba diving mask Julian?

  • tomdoyle says:

Is there a limit to the number of times I can change a flight? E.g I want to change the dates for my flight in Jan, but still some time away + in a situation we are in atm…
