More HfP redesign tweaks – let us know what you’d still like to see

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

You may have noticed some more changes in the past week to HfP’s new look. We have been fine-tuning the design as we (and you) get accustomed to it.

In the past couple of weeks, the following changes have been made:

  • Added ‘Next Article’ and ‘Previous Article’ links on posts that are less than a week old. You will now find them under the ‘Today’s Top Stories’ box. Many of you found this a useful way of moving between content.
  • Added a list of the latest comments to the sidebar on article pages, allowing you to see the latest comments across the whole site
  • Fixed an issue with search which was occasionally causing the whole site to grind to halt, or even go down for 5-10 minutes
  • Various other minor tweaks including tightening up padding (mainly on mobile, so less scrolling required), fixing the problem which stopped some articles appearing on Apple News and other bits and bobs. Most don’t mean much on their own but together they make everything a bit more harmonious.

Hopefully, by making these changes, navigating the site is a little easier.

We still hope to introduce a comment sorting function but this is a bigger project than we initially thought and it has been parked for now.

We are also looking into adding a dark mode. We have found some software to do the job but it will need a little customisation.

Let us know below if you have any other comments or thoughts of what you would like to see. We welcome all feedback, large or small (small is easier to fix). Let us know what device you are using if it is a layout issue.

PS. if you can’t see the changes properly, make sure to empty your browser cache. The easiest way to do this is CTRL + F5 on Windows and CMD + R on Apple Macs.

Would it be possible on the mobile site to have a home button at the bottom of the comments on each article to take you back to the home page? Or fix the head for points banner so that it’s always visible as clicking that also takes you to the home page. Its a pain having to scroll all the way to the top to then go home.

  • Pangolin says:

    (1) Too many page breaks – make the number of comments allowed per page larger than it is now.
    (2) Ability to get notified when someone responds to your comment.
    (3) Default to page 1 for comments.
    (4) Get Nadal to lose a few games so my bet on Djokovic to win the French has a chance of coming in.

I am currently on my laptop and noticed an error. When you enter into an article, if you click the hyperlink for comments on the left, it scrolls down little. Only if you click it again does it take you all the way down to the comments.

    Demanding, difficult to please bunch…

rob & rhys know what they’re in for when they ask for feedback 😉

  • Charlieface says:

One thing I wish, but have a feeling would be difficult coding-wise, is to highlight new comments on a page you already visited

    • mr_jetlag says:

Highlighting wouldn’t help. What might be helpful is if a comment with replies were bumped to the end of the comments list (ie, comment on page 2 out of 5 would drop to the end of page 5 when someone responds to it)

It’s almost like an integrated forum with a “view new posts” feature would be helpful…

    Dear HfP

A “historic timeline of promotions” per airline is something that would go a long way to helping me plan my travel and when/how to book it

e.g. right now I have a safari holiday booked to Tanzania for next year, ideally I would want to pick up one of the Qatar 2for1-in-business promos but I can’t remember what time of year they usually do them and whether Tanzania was ever included. I try to search history of promos on the internet and scrawl through HfP but it’s incredibly hard. Similarly in the past I have tried very often to search the history of BA Avios promos (like the current 50% off one) and such and always found it hard.

Something like this would help readers quickly see when these promos tend to be run and what they tend to be like, so for their longer term travel planning it would help a lot considering whether to wait for a promotion or book straight away.

Maintaining such a list wouldn’t be hard either as it would just be tagging posts appropriately whenever a promotion comes up (although creating it I know would give you some work of trawling through old posts)

To be clear also I am referring only to promos for buying flights – whether by point or cash.

    Thanks!
    Hugo

+1 This would be great help to also people like myself who aren’t so clued-up (wether due to lack of experience, time, effort or general smartness!) to the points/promo game.

Don’t know if it’s just me, but when reading comments on my iPad, I see the date twice against every comment, and two icons/avatars (one small, one large) when they exist. Doesn’t happen on iPhone.

    • Rob says:

You need to clear your cache.

Try this: Settings, Safari, Advanced (at the bottom), Website Data then delete the HFP line.

    • Pangolin says:

You need to clear out your cache – which you can do by going into Safari settings on your iPad.

  • cinereus says:

    a) Dark mode
    b) Reply notification
    c) Deeper comment threading
    d) Comment pages start at page 1
    e) Still can’t work out how to get avatars in comments
    f) So far all the reasoning for not having more comments per page is based on misconceptions. There is no good technical nor usability reason for not having 100+ comments per page?

    • Rhys says:

If you want an avatar you need to set your Gravatar. http://www.gravatar.com

      • Rob says:

We’ve done a dark mode trial and it works. We’re just going to tweak it a bit – we’d like the gridlines etc to appear as well. At the moment it is only switching the colour of letters.

        • cinereus says:

Please review some best practices for dark mode design (i.e. don’t just invert the colour scheme and don’t overdo contrast).
