News in brief:

A great video of Heathrow’s Radisson RED in 1964!

Two weeks ago we ran a review of the new Radisson RED hotel at London Heathrow. This is part of the old Park Inn hotel, which has now had its 950+ rooms split into two hotels – a Radisson RED and a standard Radisson.

You probably don’t know that the hotel itself dates back to 1964, when it was the first hotel to open at the airport.

A reader sent a link to this fantastic video on the British Pathe website. It is a 2 min 25 secs video of the opening event, filmed in classic 1964 newsreel style. It is well worth a watch.

Radisson RED Heathrow
It didn’t look like this in 1964 …..

Shangri-La Golden Circle extends expiry

If you are sitting on any unused Shangri-La Golden Circle hotel points, the company has decided to postpone expiring any points at the end of the year.

All balances will now be protected until 31st December 2021.

This is a good move, as Golden Circle points have a ‘hard’ expiry. Irrespective of activity, they usually expire at the end of the 3rd calendar year after you earn them.

The company has already announced a one year status extension for all elite members.

If you are sitting on some Golden Circle points, keep an eye out for an interesting announcement later this week ……

Full details of all Shangri-La covid policies covering everything from stays to status can be found here.

This offer will double up with IHG’s new ‘double points’ promotion. You will earn double base points on all cash stays between 1st October and 15th December. You MUST register before your stay via this link. Use code 44480 if needed.

Great video! I started browsing the Pathé website…

With BA saying goodbye to the 747, this seems poignant.

Fantastic Pathe newsreel, wonderfully narrated by the late Bob Danvers-Walker

  • Ed E says:

They have the same audio controls as the BA lounge showers! Those ones seemed to work though!

IHG 30% is off advance, not best flexible bookings?

  • Aston100 says:

    Qatar sale is misleading.
Their teacher offer the other day was genuinely dishonest.
This airline needs to be careful if they don’t want to annoy people and undo the positivity they created during the first six months of Covid.

      Substantiate?

No availability to any of the dozens of destinations that I checked for the next 4 UK school holidays.
And in the 5th holiday (may half term) I can only find Muscat and Jakarta.
The second ticket is supposed to be 50% off the base fare, but seems it can’t be in the W booking class, and so you end up paying for a higher base fare resulting in a larger than 50% off the W class fare you just booked for the primary ticket.

Given that the offer was for teaching staff, and restricted to W booking class for the first ticket, its ridiculous that there is apparently no W booking class availability during School holidays. Remember teaching staff cannot take leave outside of school holidays.

Hence a dishonest offer for teaching staff

It’s a global offer. Even the rest of Europe doesn’t follow UK term dates – German kids are back at school in mid August for example.

        • AndyGWP says:

Have you approached Qatar about this? Wondering what their response may be (I’ve not even had chance to search for anything yet!) :/

    • Rob says:

Got an email yesterday from someone who booked Tokyo on the exact dates he wanted, so it seems to vary.

      • Aston100 says:

I’m interested in knowing which school holiday period this lucky chap booked his flights.

      • marcw says:

Ouch… Tokio via Doha is not something I would do in economy. Did it once – never again; your travel time is almost doubled. Way way way way better if you manage to get something from Europe to Japan.

  • David says:

While very early, I don’t think this can be said to be the first Heathrow hotel or even the oldest still open. Think that goes to the round Ariel – opened in 1961 and still going.

It’s got some video too, but no voice over commentary:

Please could someone remind me the telephone number for First class customers. Still waiting for a refund that I cancelled a month or two ago. Thanks

Great news to hear regarding Shangri La Golden Circle updates. For a while I was worried my points would expire at the end of this year.
