How much of the BA schedule is going to be cut in November?

Over the last 48 hours, there have been a lot of rumours swirling around about the extent of the British Airways service cuts for November and early December.

Suffice it to say, it won’t look pretty. I haven’t written anything so far because there is a huge amount of speculation and not a lot of hard fact.

However, this email from Mark Muren, Head of Global Sales for BA, was just sent to the travel trade and is the first official word:

BA British Airways 777

Following the Government’s announcement of a new national lockdown for England last Saturday, we have been urgently reviewing our schedule for November.  Our focus is on keeping crucial air links open, bringing home the thousands of customers currently abroad, transporting vital goods, and ensuring people who are permitted to travel in and out of the UK for work, education and other reasons stipulated by the UK Government, can continue to do so.  We are doing everything in our power to best serve and support our customers, partners and colleagues during this challenging time.

In light of this announcement, we have taken the decision to implement a number of cancellations across our network. Policies are in place to ensure maximum flexibility for our customers.  If a flight is cancelled, customers will be entitled to a refund as per our standard customer guidelines. Our ‘Book with Confidence’ policy continues to offer the ability to change a flight, date or destination or request a voucher for future travel.

What is going to happen?

There was talk of the entire short haul schedule being scrapped and long haul becoming cargo only. There was also talk of the Government getting involved, allegedly because the airline – not unreasonably – didn’t see why it should run unprofitable services to keep the country open for business when it was not receiving state support.

It now appears that BA will reduce to a skeleton passenger service. It is not clear if the Government has agreed to underwrite some of these flights.

Some leisure routes will continue for a week or so to repatriate people as they come to the end of their holidays. Cargo flights will continue.

A report on Flyertalk from a BA employee states that all Gatwick long-haul leisure flights are suspended until 10th December.

  • Lisbon Refugee says:

Flew out to Lisbon on Wednesday 4 Nov with a return scheduled for 4 Dec, used Avios. Got an email yesterday that the return flight MAY be cancelled. Said changing my flights would be possible right now, but really don’t understand why I can’t just do this online and have to call in. This isn’t the 1980s for crying out loud…

  • Lady London says:

depends on timing which is what you are entitled to have. Delta is an example of an airline with a very high chance of offering reasonable timings as they have many direct flights. Within reason you dont have to take a multistop itinerary or a flight on one of your booked airline’s “friends” if another aurline is flying direct and much closer to the timings and duration you booked.

Not saying it’s always easy to get BA to provide reroutings as they should but it’s best to know your rights.

  • Craig Vassie says:

Add GIB to the list of cancellations wef Weds 11th Nov.

  • Julia Curtis says:

please can you confirm that December flights to SA have not been cancelled

  • sigma421 says:

I have a MAN-LHR flight booked next Thursday (BA1395). Still bookable and looks normal in MMB but the app says it’s cancelled!

    • Sukes says:

I have BHD-LHR 13 Nov at 08.30. Still bookable at that time, showing fine in MMB and I’ve had no contact from BA. However flight status checker in app shows dep time is now 2hrs later.

  • Will says:

Just had my direct flight from Gran Canaria to Heathrow, cancelled! The Canary Islands are exempt from quarantine. But now, my only way back is changing planes; via MAD. Do I need to now quarantine, because of this forced change of my plans by BA? (If I do need to quarantine, this will seriously affect , my home/household dynamics.)

    • Will says:

Just had a very helpful clarification from BA:-
“As you are transiting through MAD you will not need to quarantine on arrival to the UK. You will not be able to leave the airport and must remain air side for this to be completed. You will only need to quarantine if you are spending more than 24 hours in MAD which you are not doing. Quarantine is based on your departing destination which will we know is Gran Canaria.”

      • Allan says:

That seems at odds with previous advice that you did need to quarrantine if you got off the mode of transport within a country that requires quarrantine.

      • Paula says:

That’s contrary to what I was told also in relation to a connecting flight via Madrid:

        https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-travel-corridors#transit-stops

If your journey involves a transit stop in a country, territory or region not on the travel corridor list, you will need to self-isolate when you arrive in England if:
        new passengers get on
you or other passengers get off the transport you are on and mix with other people, then get on again

Obviously you will mix with people in Madrid airport, so which is right please?

        • John says:

If yiu transit via MAD you *WILL* need to quarantine on return to the UK as per the UK Government guidelines. BAs helpful advice to Will is wrong.

      • Harry T says:

You will be required to quarantine on arrival in the UK if you transit Madrid.

  • Joe says:

I have a pair of business class tickets (booked through Avios and 241 voucher) from LHR to SYD late Dec. They have just canceled the SIN-SYD leg but the LHR-SIN hasn’t been cancelled. Would I be able to request for a rebooking for Dec 2021? Getting reward flights to SYD is a nightmare and would prefer not to have to do that again from scratch. I am also assuming they wouldn’t offer me vouchers for business class from LHR to SYD.

    • John says:

      Yes

    • Harry T says:

You should be able to move the flights to dates up to a year from when you booked them NOT when you were due to fly, which means you will not be able to rebook for December next year.

  • Luka says:

Talked to BA over the phone, BGI returns on Dec 9th and is mostly sold out until 11th already.
