The HfP chat thread – Friday 6th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://www.headforpoints.com/2020/11/06/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-6th-november/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Just checked my Barclaycard account:

    20,690 Hilton Honors Rewards points

    • Ali M says:

      none on mine as yet.
I started to think laterally that this may be to do with impending closure of the h honors product afterall…
Was ready to receive the ceremonial email like the old mbna that we are closingthe product you hold but you can transfer to this new and ‘exciting’ product instead (wasn’t exciting)

      • martyn ford says:

Here`s an email I received this morning:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your Barclay points for October 2020. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us.

We apologize but unfortunately this is a system issue, we are working with Barclay on solving the problem. Please allow 6-8 weeks for the points to reflect on your account. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

    • Crafty says:

      None for me yet

  • Ali M says:

Silly silly question – I am able to make a 50 k contribution to my mortgage, would my bank allow me to use my Credit card(s) you reckon? or is that a very far fetched ‘silly’ question to even propose.

    • Tom says:

You won’t find any banks allowing a credit card to pay off your mortgage. You may, if you are lucky, find a bank willing to accept a debit card which you could use a credit card backed Curve card.

    • Vit says:

Reckon would be best to call your bank as they would be the best person to ask? However from my experience with Halifax when I paid off mine — it had to be debit card unfortunately. 🙁

    • Ali M says:

      Thank you everyone

    • Sandgrounder says:

Last year I successfully Curved a few grand from the bearded one to pay off my home loan with the blue eagle.

      • Anna says:

You could also build up a nice balance with Ernie via bendy then transfer that to pay off the home loan.

    • Amar says:

Not sure if you can now but last year I used a bendy to pay off a mortgage in chunks and the bank was fine with it. Bendy was backed by virgin – racked up a load of points!
. . . Which i regrettably transferred to Hilton earlier this year!

    • Reney says:

I don’t think it is a silly question, my bank allows overpayment by credit cards at your own risk. So I tried £50, direct not via bendy. No interest charged so far have been doing that for a few months.

  • JohnT says:

Looks like Easyjet is cancelling Luton flights in January, our ski flight to Salzburg just been cancelled for 16th! Assuming return trip will be cancelled too in a few days. No availability from LGW now. I know a bit of a pipedream to think we could ever go anyway….

    • Adam says:

Wow! I’ve got EZ Luton to Innsbruck on 20th Jan. Not received a cancellation yet but I’m surprised they’re pulling flights 10 weeks out

      • Lady London says:

Easyjet has been very smart and took prompt action to protect their business. They’ve been about 2 months ahead of other airlines in proactively cancelling and pulling out of routes/airports. They haven’t hung around waiting for government anouncements IMO they’ve been ahead of the game.

Planning to buy some One4All gift cards from Morrisons. Can I use the same One4All gift card at multiple retailers for multiple purchases?

Also, can someone please confirm what are the other high street gift cards one can buy from Morrisons?
    TIA

    • Freddy says:

Quite a few options, I bought next, Amazon and John Lewis last time

    • mark2 says:

Yes you can. Probably the only major retailer not on One4All is Amazon which you can buy at Morrison’s.
Most also have their own gift cards but they are obviously limiting.
You can also buy Morrison’s own gift cards to use later for fuel, other gift cards …

    • Nick_C says:

Apple Music, Netflix, Google Play Store definitely
(Think I also saw Pizza Express, but wouldn’t swear to it.)

Worth noting that you can use Apple Music GCs to pay an annual £99 instead of paying £9.99 each month.

    • Wally1976 says:

With the One4All vouchers if you use them online it’s often not easy to use them as part payment so unless you can spend the exact amount (which can be over multiple purchases) you might end up wasting a little. Instore they’re better and I believe they also have better financial protection than many other types of gift voucher.

    • The Streets says:

      Put £1250 through this evening

  • KBuffett says:

Is it illegal to go abroad on holiday during this current lockdown?

    • Rachel R says:

      What lockdown?

    • Rob says:

It’s illegal to leave your house except for the (admittedly hugely long) list of acceptable reasons. It isn’t, per se, illegal to go on holiday but you have to commit an offence – leave home – to do it.

However, plenty of acceptable reasons to leave the country, eg to view residential property, if you read the legal document we published the other day. Easier if you can create some work though. Rather easy for me since I could just go to review a hotel.

      • Nick_C says:

        That’s not quite right Rob.

        The Regulations say:-

5.—(1) No person may leave or be outside of the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

        2) For the purposes of paragraph (1) … the circumstances in which a person has a reasonable excuse include where one of the exceptions set out in regulation 6 applies;

So Regulation 6 gives you examples of what will always be considered to be a reasonable excuse. It it illustrative, but not exhaustive.

You might have a reasonable excuse that isn’t specified in Regulation 6.

The draftsmen cannot be expected to conceive and specify every possible circumstance in which it might be reasonable for you to leave your home.

The only way unspecified reasons for leaving your home will be ruled reasonable or not is if a person declines to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice or is otherwise prosecuted, when a Court would decide whether or not the person had acted reasonably.

HSBC World Elite – Just noticed the following in the welcome brochure PDF:

“Your extended warrantyWhy is it that if something breaks it’s always after 13 months? That’s why with our Premier Credit Card and Premier World Elite Mastercard, you can extend the warranty on selected household appliances for a further 12 months.”

It looks like the World Elite card will have this extended warranty added soon?

Though, looking at the main website, the extended warranty is still listed as an exclusie feature for the Premier Card only.

  • Alasdair S says:

Hiya. I was due to fly on Sunday to LIS for urgent business reasons, back on 24th Nov. BA sent me a cancellation email for the return and said they’d be in touch. Just now, they emailed me saying “we’ve cancelled and refunded” – no consultation. I phoned the Gold line and said “I don’t want cancellation I want re-routing” but they are having none of it – saying “We have no code-share flights so can’t re-route you”.
My reading of the CAA guidance (https://www.caa.co.uk/uploadedFiles/CAA/Content/Accordion/Standard_Content/Our_work/Annex%201Reouting%20under%20Regulation%20EU261%20and%20the%20CAAs%20view%20on%20compliance.pdf) says that’s wrong – no codeshares is not good enough – but they aren’t listening – escalated to manager who was worse than the original handler. Anyone know how I can get them to fix this, or am I wrong and stuck with rebooking?
    Thanks very much

    • ChrisC says:

Was it flight only or a BA Holiday booking?

If a holiday booking (even if you were going for business) then they have to refund within 7 days due to a set of different regulations.

      • old bob says:

Useful information Chris, I’m thinking of booking a BA holiday in January/February, what do you the chances are of it happening in the current climate? Obviously this would be subject to all the usual caveats around insurance and Geoff’s ongoing health problems.

    • TGLoyalty says:

You are right it’s not your issue they have no codeshare they should re route. You can take it to the CAA but not sure how much traction you’ll get.

Other way is to book something else and go through MCOL as it’s your legal right to be rerouted.

      • Alasdair S says:

Thanks very much Chris and TG. It was a package with a car – I didn’t realise the regs were different. I’ve rebooked with Iberia on the same outbound and the inbound flights I wanted BA to put me on. Infuriating!

  • Tony says:

May be old news, but Hilton re emailing with buy one get one free on points again.
