Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 24th November

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here:  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Sure many of you have seen, but UK arrivals after Dec. 16 will be able to test privately at a Govt.-approved facility (list to be published) after 5 days’ quarantine, which will end as soon as negative result arrives (which I’m guessing they’re presuming will be quicly!).
So looks like m-in-law WILL be coming for Xmas…

    • Mouse says:

Does anyone know whether this applies to those arriving from 16th onwards, or alternatively if early quarantine release begins from the 16th (i.e., you could arrive on 11th Dec and be tested on 16th and released)?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

      Not officially confirmed yet tho…

  • Will says:

Can Clubcard points be converted manually to avios during this final accrual period? I think the last auto convert Has happened but I understood they could still be converted for a few more weeks. Is that only for clubcard vouchers that have already been issued from points at the quarterly cycle?

  • Andrew says:

Full and half bar trolleys from 747s now available over on the what a buy website if anyone is interested. Get in quick before the BBC does a top-read news article on that too!

  • Harold R says:

Any very low tax redemption with virgin? I have plenty of points but would like to avoid paying cash

    • Travel Strong says:

Ex-EU to USA routes, usually on Delta or KLM metal offered redemptions at about half the cash element, but I struggled to find anything useful in upper yesterday. Loads of economy only.

    • Andrew says:

One way from HKG to LHR – £33 in Upper

  • KBuffett says:

Is there a points efficient route to upgrade from Economy to Business or Business to First on Emirates?

Also, best way to collect Emirates SkyWards points outside of Amex?

    • Matthew says:

Think the best way is economy flex ticket then upgrade with miles. You’ll only pay the APD difference from the UK and just the miles from DXB for example. They often run ‘offers’ on upgrade mileage required and label it so you know. I’ve not looked at the Business to First option. But remember they have removed surcharges on award flights paid in full with miles so do compare that option too.

      • Matthew says:

There are sometimes vouchers for 10% off economy fares too which in conjunction with an upgrade may make a good deal.

  • Leo says:

Regarding the BA status extension, if I am Blue now (no status) and my renewal date is in March 2021, if I qualify Silver in Dec 2020, will my Silver be valid until March 2022 or March 2023 (extra 12 months)?
